Background / History

Orochimaru was a Konoha ninja and one of the Three Sannin. Uchiha Gen assesses him as a plausible Fourth Hokage candidate had Minato not emerged and Orochimaru’s human experiments not been exposed 11.

Before resurrecting Gen, Orochimaru had already experimented with reanimating a Kazekage. That body possessed considerable autonomy and escaped his control because the technique was immature. He had also suffered a crushing defeat against Itachi, making another powerful Uchiha particularly valuable to his research 1.

His pursuit of suitable bodies centers on Sasuke’s Sharingan and Kimimaro’s Shikotsumyaku. Although he considers Kimimaro an excellent candidate for Living Corpse Reincarnation, the latter’s bloodline disease makes that body unsuitable 34 136.

Appearance

Orochimaru’s appearance and mannerisms emphasize his snake-like nature 1 37 146.

  • Eyes: Golden eyes with vertical, slit-like pupils 37 49.
  • Tongue: Long and slick; he frequently licks his lips while evaluating subjects or negotiating 1 50.
  • Skin: Pale hands are explicitly described during the Death God Mask ritual 145.
  • Voice: Hoarse, raspy, and sinister 142 147.
  • Serpent form: A giant white-scaled snake with a human face, used when abandoning a body 146.
  • Disguises: Uses masks and the Transformation Technique to conceal himself while accompanying Genkyo 154 174.

Personality

Orochimaru approaches people as resources to be studied, controlled, or replaced. He sacrifices a Sound ninja to resurrect Gen, demands unconditional obedience from the resulting body, and explicitly tells Kimimaro that disobedient tools are useless. Even his efforts to preserve Kimimaro’s health are tied to the latter’s remaining usefulness 1 49.

His scientific curiosity is persistent and practical. Bone Lord’s healthy Shikotsumyaku challenges his findings about bloodline disease, leading him to examine cell samples and question whether information is being withheld. He is willing to trade a complete forbidden technique when the exchange also creates a useful connection with Genkyo 67 72 73 84.

Despite his confidence, Orochimaru is cautious about superior opponents. He repeatedly relocates his hideouts, negotiates through clones and intermediaries, and dislikes placing his survival in another person’s hands. That caution does not eliminate opportunism: when he believes Bone Lord is isolated, he attempts to seize his power and the Death God Mask 50 72 120 142.

Repeated setbacks temporarily undermine his composure. During the battle against Reikawa and Sasuke, he recognizes that his recent actions have become irrational—yet Sasuke’s growing strength only intensifies his desire to possess him 38.

Abilities & Skills

Impure World Reincarnation

Orochimaru summons deceased individuals into bodies constructed around living sacrifices 1.

  • Uses cells or remains from the deceased; his first documented casting consumes a Sound ninja to resurrect Uchiha Gen 1.
  • Can impose control on reanimated bodies, but immature versions allow excessive autonomy 1.
  • Gen breaks free of his control, demonstrating that the technique does not guarantee permanent obedience 9 50.
  • Possesses a complete version of the technique, which he gives to Bone Lord as payment for research cooperation 72.
  • Reanimates Hokage after their souls are released from the Death God 145 146.

Living Corpse Reincarnation

Orochimaru changes bodies to continue his existence and obtain desirable physical abilities 34 146.

  • Seeks Sasuke as a Sharingan-bearing vessel and considers Kimimaro for his Shikotsumyaku 34 136.
  • Takes over White Zetsu by entering its mouth in serpent form; the vessel then assumes his appearance 146.
  • His Curse Marks provide a possible route to revival, but that route requires outside action and is not guaranteed 145.
  • The White Zetsu offered by Bone Lord has weak self-awareness, making it attractive as a comparatively low-risk vessel 136.

Snake Summoning and Body Modification

Orochimaru combines summoned snakes with an unnaturally flexible body 37 38.

  • Uses giant snakes to destroy Reikawa and Sasuke’s tent and launch an ambush 37.
  • Extends his neck and projects the Kusanagi Sword from his mouth 37.
  • Soft Physique Modification lets him twist and evade attacks along trajectories that initially overwhelm Sasuke’s visual tracking 38.
  • Small snakes transport research samples and retrieve objects, including the Death God Mask 50 142.
  • Summons Manda, whose demands for human sacrifices and resistance to orders complicate its use 142 143.

Clones, Disguises, and Concealment

Orochimaru uses deception to protect his location and escape unfavorable encounters 38 50 104.

  • Escapes Sasuke’s Lightning Blade through a human-skin-covered Mud Clone, which Reikawa suspects contains part of his spiritual essence 38.
  • Conducts his exchange with Obito through a Shadow Clone 50.
  • Conceals a base behind an illusion barrier and notices when Itachi destroys it 104.
  • Uses the Transformation Technique to match the appearance of Genkyo’s traveling group 154.
  • Supplies Gen with a human-skin disguise for his identity as Jiya 2.

Biological Research

Orochimaru studies bloodline abilities, disease, and experimental cell growth 72 73 84.

  • White Zetsu cell transplants temporarily delay Kimimaro’s illness but cannot stop the damage caused by Shikotsumyaku 72.
  • His research suggests that greater Kaguya-clan talent correlates with more severe bloodline disease 73.
  • Cultivated samples from Bone Lord repeatedly self-destruct, preventing him from preserving usable material 84 85.
  • Recognizes the implications of apparently missing history and altered memories when examining Tobirama’s records 221.

Death God Mask Ritual

Orochimaru can use the appropriate mask to summon the Death God into himself and release its captive souls 145.

  • Cuts open the Death God’s stomach, freeing four Hokage souls and his sealed hands 145.
  • Suffers a matching abdominal wound, making an immediate body transfer essential to survival 145 146.
  • Undertakes the ritual only after Gen supplies a replacement vessel and assurances against betrayal 144 145.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — Launched from his mouth during his attack on Reikawa 37.
  • Sky Ring — Retained after leaving Akatsuki; its recovery becomes Gen’s first assignment upon officially joining the organization 84.
  • Death God Mask — Retrieved from the Uzumaki Mask Storage Hall and used to recover the souls sealed by the Death God 142 144 145.
  • Impure World Reincarnation scroll — Contains the complete technique traded to Bone Lord 72.
  • Laboratory equipment and records — Supports his reanimation and bloodline research. Gen steals equipment from a temporary base and sells it for 20,000 ryo 1 3.
  • Nutrient Pod — Houses Kimimaro while his use of Shikotsumyaku is restricted 49.

Relationships

  • Uchiha Gen — Initially his reanimated asset; later an escaped subordinate who becomes powerful enough to coerce him. Their relationship shifts into wary cooperation, and Gen eventually offers to help secure his release 1 9 143 154 215.
  • Kabuto — Assistant, messenger, and negotiator. Orochimaru deliberately delays rescuing him from Gen’s attack as a warning against arrogance 1 2 72 104.
  • Sasuke Uchiha — Desired vessel. Orochimaru exploits his hatred of Itachi, but repeated failed abductions and Reikawa’s intervention weaken that leverage 8 37 38 136.
  • Kimimaro — Devoted subordinate and prospective vessel whose disease diminishes his usefulness. Orochimaru restricts his abilities while continuing treatment and experimentation 34 49 72.
  • Bone Lord — Gen’s Shikotsumyaku-bearing persona and clone, whom Orochimaru treats as a separate Genkyo representative. Their dealings combine research cooperation, bargaining, protection, and attempted betrayal 72 120 142 144.
  • Itachi Uchiha — A dangerous opponent who previously defeated him. Itachi later penetrates his base defenses and pursues the recovery of the Sky Ring 1 104 119 120.
  • Obito Uchiha — Pursuer and information buyer. Orochimaru trades limited information about Gen for a charred arm useful to his research, then withdraws through a clone 50.
  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — Former teacher, killed by Orochimaru. Hiruzen’s sealing of his hands leaves him substantially weakened 34 144.
  • Tobirama Senju — Distrustful scientific predecessor. Tobirama later questions him about missing history and agrees to release him in exchange for information 147 221.
  • Manda — Powerful but uncooperative summon. Orochimaru abandons it after Gen and Bone Lord subdue it 142 143.
