Background / History

Mu En leads Shrek Academy as the Sea God Pavilion Master while also appearing to students as an elderly dormitory manager. He has more than a century of experience judging people, and his frail appearance conceals the academy’s strongest soul master 20 57 108.

After a previous beast tide ended in a peace agreement, he promised Di Tian that Shrek would seek a solution to the conflict between Soul Masters and soul beasts. The academy had made no breakthrough by the time Liu Yuan introduced the Soul Spirit System 183.

His failing health makes succession an urgent concern. He initially intended Xuan Zi to inherit the pavilion leadership, followed by Yan Shaozhe, but became dissatisfied with their ability to shoulder responsibility. His original final safeguard was to merge his soul with the Golden Ancient Tree after death, leaving his power behind to protect Shrek 52 184.

Appearance

  • Clothing: Simple grey cloth garments when stationed at the dormitory entrance 20.
  • Face and eyes: Deep wrinkles, a bark-like face, and normally cloudy, dim eyes that sharpen when his attention or power is stirred 20 149 152.
  • Build and posture: Skeletal hands, withered fingers, sluggish movement, and a back hunched at nearly a right angle 52 57.
  • Mobility: Frequently uses a wheelchair or recliner; Liu Yuan sometimes supports him when he stands 55 57 149 150.

Personality

Mu En is affectionate toward his younger disciples but uncompromising about responsibility. He tolerates Liu Yuan’s teasing and persistent requests, yet reacts fiercely when negligence endangers students. His anger at Xuan Zi’s failed protection nearly drives him to kill the elder, though Shrek’s future need for Xuan Zi restrains him 96 124 184.

He places education, civilian protection, and students’ lives above institutional prestige. He rejects sacrificing inspection duties for tournament glory, insists that exchange students receive fair instruction, and refuses to let Shrek monopolize Soul Spirit technology 125 152 185.

His mentorship respects personal choice and private secrets. He considers the Body Sect a potentially better place for Huo Yuhao’s development without treating that possibility as betrayal, and does not demand explanations for every hidden aspect of his disciples’ abilities 89 155.

Although initially detached about death, Mu En regains a desire to live long enough to see Liu Yuan lead Shrek and to watch his descendants grow. His hesitation over cloning comes from concern for the academy’s defenses, not rejection of another life 178 184.

Cloning and Survival Plans

Mu En’s existing body cannot retain life energy: its persistent injuries continually damage it and cause that energy to leak away. Gold of Life alone cannot save him; he needs a replacement body 96.

Proposed measure Purpose and limitations
Clone a new body Electrolux considers soul transfer feasible if Mu En’s soul enters before the clone develops its own soul. His soul strength must be sealed to prevent the weaker body from collapsing 176.
Forge a Martial Soul Natal Weapon Proposed as a replacement defensive safeguard. Liu Yuan expects it to provide Limit Douluo-level strength, particularly under Xuan Zi’s control 184.
Secure suitable materials Mu En agrees that the weapon must be forged; Liu Yuan undertakes to obtain the necessary materials. Neither the completed weapon nor Mu En’s successful body transfer is documented in the provided chapters 184.
