Background / History

Gohan joins Son Goku, Vegeta, Son Goten, Trunks, and Videl in the ritual that grants Goku the power of a Super Saiyan God. Videl's unborn child is counted as a righteous Saiyan, allowing the group to reach the required six participants 4.

After Goku becomes a Super Saiyan God, Gohan is unable to sense his father's divine ki. He also questions Whis and Lin Fan about their identities, leading to Whis's revelation that he is Beerus's master 5.

By Bulma's birthday, Gohan has neglected his training enough for both Goku and Vegeta to notice that his aura is weaker than it had been seven days earlier. Vegeta warns that he may no longer be able to match his former peak 14.

When Frieza returns to Earth, Gohan is enraged by the destruction of a city and transforms into a Super Saiyan. Piccolo convinces him not to attack recklessly, instead having the defenders delay Frieza until stronger reinforcements arrive 25 26. Gohan steadies Krillin when Frieza's taunts revive his fear of Namek, reminding him that Whis and Beerus are on Earth 26.

Gohan defeats Tagoma, Frieza's strongest subordinate, after transforming into Super Saiyan Full Power. Frieza then targets him personally, severely injuring and torturing him while Gohan refuses to let Piccolo and Krillin intervene against an enemy they cannot defeat 26 27. The Frieza incident changes Gohan's priorities. He can be intensely angry, especially when civilians are harmed or when Frieza is involved, but he is capable of restraining himself when Piccolo gives him a strategic reason to wait 25 26. He also encourages Krillin through fear rather than dismissing it 26.

Following his defeat and near-death experience, Gohan becomes notably more determined.
