Background

Nagato was born a commoner in the Land of Rain and carries the powerful constitution of the Uzumaki Clan. Unknown to him during his childhood, his Rinnegan had been transplanted into him so that Madara and Zetsu could use him as a vessel and tool for their plans. Zetsu monitored and manipulated his path toward becoming a shinobi. 12 24 381

As a starving, exhausted child, Nagato met Chiba and later travelled with Yahiko, Konan, and Chiba through the war-torn Land of Rain in search of a teacher. His Rinnegan first awakened in combat when he killed a Rock Ninja while protecting his friends, drawing Jiraiya's attention and leading the Sannin to accept the group as disciples. 24 29 33 34

Nagato was initially a thin, frail child weakened by hunger and cold. His defining feature is the Rinnegan: eyes patterned with concentric ripples. 24 33
