Background / History

Jiraiya was trained by the Third Hokage and became one of Konoha's legendary Sannin. He later trained Minato Namikaze and was destined to mentor Naruto; his reputation as the “Mad Demon” and a Kage-level combatant is established long before his Rain Country pupils seek him out. 12

After the Land of Rain war, Jiraiya, Tsunade, and Orochimaru encounter Yahiko, Nagato, Konan, and Chiba. Moved by the children surviving their journey through a battlefield, Jiraiya chooses to remain behind temporarily and teach them survival skills, despite Orochimaru advocating their deaths. 30
