Arc 5The War in Rain and Wind

Hyuga Shinichi and his companions gathered intelligence in Sunagakure and returned to help Konoha survive the war, while the conflict reshaped the lives of Pakura, Rasa, and the Hatake family. Konoha and Sunagakure made peace, but the war with Amegakure continued as Hanzo confronted Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade.

  • Hyuga Shinichi’s team infiltrated the Land of Wind disguised as fruit sellers, gathered intelligence near Sunagakure, and escaped after the Third Kazekage detected their surveillance.
  • Konoha’s forces fought Sunagakure’s poison and puppet attacks, and Hyuga Shinichi saved poisoned Uchiha Zuho after Uchiha Fun abandoned him.

  • Pakura lost her squad in a cave, awakened Scorch Release while fighting Amegakure ninja, and vowed to deliver her captain’s intelligence scroll.
  • Rasa discovered that he could control gold dust with Magnet Release, and Chiyo and Ebizo sent him to Sunagakure to train with the Third Kazekage.
  • Hatake Sakumo’s supply missions helped Konoha advance into the Land of Rain, but Hanzo stopped the advance near Amegakure and fought Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade.
Chapters 101–125 Vol. 2 Read

Ch. 101Setting Out for the Land of Rain

  • Hyuga Shinichi told Uchiha Fugaku that he did not mind the Uchiha’s arrogance as long as their intentions were good, and Fugaku thanked him.
  • Yuhi Shinku led the gathered Konoha shinobi toward the Land of Rain, with the Eye-Nose-Ear Team scouting ahead and Nawaki accompanying them.
  • Hanzo learned that Konoha had sent shinobi and supplies to the Land of Rain and ordered his logistics units to prepare.
  • Sunagakure’s shinobi learned of Konoha’s deployment, and their leader arranged to request supplies and warned a border commander to prepare for battle.
  • By three in the morning, the Konoha force reached a camp site near the borders of the Land of Rain and the Land of Rivers, where Hyuga Shinichi helped set up tents.

Ch. 102The Eye-Nose-Ear Team

Hyuga Shinichi and the Eye-Nose-Ear Team received a mission to infiltrate the Land of Rivers and the Land of Wind to gather intelligence on Sunagakure. After preparing and resting, the team departed toward the Land of Rivers.

  • A ninja summoned Hyuga Shinichi to Yuhi Shinku's tent, where Dan Katō and Hatake Sakumo teased Dan about marrying Tsunade.
  • Yuhi Shinku assigned the Eye-Nose-Ear Team a dangerous intelligence-gathering mission and told them to prioritize their safety.
  • Hyuga Shinichi returned to his tent and informed Nawaki, Inuzuka Gai, and their dog about the mission and departure time.
  • The team gathered supplies, rested, ate, and set off toward the Land of Rivers after five in the afternoon.

Ch. 103Disguised Entry into the Land of Wind

Hyuga Shinichi and his companions disguised themselves as fruit sellers and entered the Land of Wind, where they struggled across the scorching desert. They took shelter beside a boulder, but a caravan escorted by Sunagakure shinobi stopped there too, leaving both groups on alert.

  • Hyuga Shinichi and the others disguised themselves as fruit sellers and crossed into the Land of Wind.
  • The group trekked through the hot desert, and Nawaki complained as their water ran out.
  • Hyuga Shinichi spotted an approaching caravan and four Sunagakure shinobi, so he led the group to rest beside a boulder.
  • The caravan stopped at the same boulder, and its driver mistook the group for bandits.
  • The Sunagakure shinobi approached, drew their Kunai, and went on alert.

Ch. 104Want to Buy Fruit?

Nawaki and the others posed as orphaned fruit sellers from the Land of Rivers to avoid suspicion from the Sunagakure ninja escorting a caravan. They won the group’s trust with apples and a sad story, but the chapter ended as the youngest Sunagakure ninja noticed someone watching her.

  • Nawaki introduced the group as orphaned brothers from the Land of Rivers who had come to the Land of Wind to sell fruit.
  • The Sunagakure ninja mistook Nawaki’s movement for a threat, then relaxed when he opened his pack and showed them fruit.
  • Nawaki handed out apples, and the Sunagakure ninja and caravan members gathered to rest and talk.
  • Nawaki told the caravan boss a tragic story about the brothers’ orphaned past, earning sympathy from the caravan and the Sunagakure ninja.
  • The youngest Sunagakure ninja was about to comfort the boys but noticed someone watching her and looked over.

Ch. 105A Sympathetic Heart

Hyuga Shinichi and his companions maintained their civilian-orphan disguises while selling fruit to a caravan and a group of Sunagakure ninja. Shinichi learned that the female ninja was Pakura, who might soon enter the battlefield, and the group received desert supplies in exchange for their fruit.

  • When Pakura questioned why Shinichi seemed to be staring at her, Inuzuka Gai and Nawaki pretended he was blind and explained that he had lost his sight in a childhood fire.
  • Shinichi apologized to Pakura while acting blind, and she accepted that she had mistaken his gaze.
  • After hearing Pakura's name and learning she was heading toward the battlefield, Shinichi considered whether she had yet awakened Scorch Release.
  • Nawaki explained that Aburame Tomohiro was mute, then promoted their fruit to the caravan and Sunagakure ninja.
  • The caravan and the Sunagakure ninja bought two backpacks of fruit, and the caravan owner gave the group supplies for crossing the desert.

Ch. 106Arriving Near Sunagakure

Hyuga Shinichi and his companions traveled through the desert toward Sunagakure, where they discovered large groups of shinobi carrying supplies to the front lines. They reached the village before dawn and began observing it from a high slope, using Byakugan and Sound-Stealing Bugs to gather intelligence.

  • Pakura caught Hyuga Shinichi when he tripped, then admitted she was unsure whether she could be called a good person before going to war.
  • Hyuga Shinichi, Aburame Tomohiro, Nawaki, Inuzuka Gai, and Black Charcoal left the caravan and continued toward Sunagakure.
  • The group rested in the desert, but Hyuga Shinichi spotted Sunagakure shinobi transporting supplies, and Aburame Tomohiro's Sound-Stealing Bugs learned that more supply groups were following.
  • The group hurried onward, repeatedly hiding from supply convoys, and reached the vicinity of Sunagakure before dawn.
  • Hyuga Shinichi surveyed Sunagakure from a high slope while Aburame Tomohiro sent improved Sound-Stealing Bugs into the village to collect information.

Ch. 107The Third Kazekage Meets Bunpuku

The Third Kazekage visited Bunpuku to find out whether he could use Shukaku's power in battle. Bunpuku explained that they coexisted peacefully but neither controlled the other, leaving the Kazekage without the answer he wanted.

  • The Third Kazekage considered deploying Bunpuku in the war but worried that Konoha would counter with Uzumaki Mito and the Nine-Tails.
  • The Third Kazekage reasoned that Sunagakure might gain an advantage because Bunpuku had been a jinchuriki for many years.
  • The Third Kazekage visited Bunpuku in prison and sent the guards away so they could speak alone.
  • Bunpuku thanked the Third Kazekage for remembering his name and said he and Shukaku peacefully coexisted without controlling each other.
  • The Third Kazekage asked whether Bunpuku could wield Shukaku's power on the battlefield, then ended the visit after Bunpuku began to explain.

Ch. 108The "Love" in Clasped Palms

Bunpuku reflected on accepting others and helped Shukaku recognize their bond, while Hyuga Shinichi’s team gathered intelligence about Sunagakure’s plans. At Konoha’s border camp, Yuhi Shinku mourned the casualties and the seemingly endless war.

  • Bunpuku told Shukaku that people and beasts could find peace by sincerely accepting one another, and Shukaku compared him to the Sage of Six Paths.
  • Bunpuku said someone would one day protect and guide Shukaku, then joined the characters in his palms to form the character for “love.”
  • Aburame Tomohiro, Inuzuka Gai, Nawaki, and Hyuga Shinichi discussed the danger of the Third Kazekage deploying the One-Tail.
  • Hyuga Shinichi ordered Aburame Tomohiro to keep using Sound-Stealing Bugs to eavesdrop on Sunagakure, despite having gathered enough intelligence to report back.
  • Yuhi Shinku lamented Konoha’s casualties to Dan Katō and reflected that the war would bring little but pain and loss.

Ch. 109They Noticed

Dan Katō worried when Hyuga Shinichi and his team failed to report back from the Land of Wind, but Yuhi Shinku and Hatake Sakumo urged him to prioritize Konoha’s war with Sunagakure. Meanwhile, the Third Kazekage realized the spies watching him were likely observing from outside the village and sent ninja to search beyond its walls.

  • A messenger reported that Hyuga Shinichi and his companions had not been seen near the Land of Rivers border and had sent no messages.
  • Dan Katō wanted to search for them, but Yuhi Shinku and Hatake Sakumo persuaded him to focus on the war and trust that they were safe.
  • The Third Kazekage ordered Sunagakure sealed and searched after sensing that someone was watching him.
  • Hyuga Shinichi used his Byakugan and the Sound-Stealing Bugs to realize the team had been detected, so the four people and one dog fled.
  • After questioning captured spies, the Third Kazekage concluded that the watchers were outside Sunagakure and ordered more ninja to search there.

Ch. 110Leaving the Land of Wind

The Third Kazekage failed to find the spies and stepped in Nawaki’s buried feces, then concealed his failure by returning to Sunagakure. Hyuga Shinichi’s group escaped across the desert, while the chapter ends with the Land of Rain battlefields locked in uneven clashes and Uchiha Fun charging through Sunagakure’s ranks.

  • The Third Kazekage searched outside Sunagakure, stepped in two piles of feces, and buried his ruined shoes before returning to the village.
  • Nawaki admitted his stomach was upset, and the group realized the Third Kazekage had stepped in the feces they had buried.
  • Hyuga Shinichi confirmed with his Byakugan that no one was pursuing them, led the group to rest briefly, and then set off again.
  • Konoha advanced against Amegakure in the Land of Rain, while Sunagakure remained locked in stalemates against both sides.
  • Uchiha Fun used a Great Fireball to break through Sunagakure’s formation and charged into their ranks, cutting down their ninja.

Ch. 111Uchiha Fun's Resentment

Uchiha Fun slaughtered Sunagakure ninja while resenting Hyuga Shinichi, Uchiha Fugaku, and his younger brother Uchiha Zuho. In the Land of Rain, Nagato found his parents dead after two starving Konoha ninja mistakenly killed them, buried them, and left for Amegakure.

  • Uchiha Fun imagined his enemies while killing Sunagakure ninja and reveled in their fear.
  • Uchiha Zuho protected Uchiha Fun from a puppet attack, but Uchiha Fun berated him, shoved him aside, and killed the puppet's controller.
  • Uchiha Zuho drove back the advancing Sunagakure ninja with a Great Fireball, then followed Uchiha Fun again.
  • Konoha's long supply lines and repeated ambushes left its ninja short of food, though Orochimaru ordered rations reduced equally.
  • Nagato woke to find his parents and two Konoha ninja dead after the Konoha ninja mistook his parents for Amegakure enemies.
  • Nagato buried his parents, packed the remaining supplies, and set out toward Amegakure without knowing where else to go.

Ch. 112Sunagakure's Plan

Ebizo set Sunagakure’s poison plan in motion, using Chiyo’s poisoned weapons to weaken Konoha’s forces and prevent them from reinforcing the Land of Rain. Uchiha Zuho was poisoned while saving Uchiha Fun, but Hyuga Shinichi and the others arrived and struck back against the Sunagakure attackers.

  • After learning Amegakure had disrupted Konoha’s supply lines, Ebizo ordered Sunagakure to poison Konoha’s shinobi and keep them from reinforcing the Land of Rain.
  • The Sunagakure commander sent fifty puppet masters armed with Chiyo’s poison into battle, where they poisoned Konoha shinobi with blades and senbon.
  • A puppet master targeted Uchiha Fun with poisoned senbon, and Uchiha Zuho pushed him aside, taking several needles in his shoulder and back.
  • As a puppet attacked the stunned Uchiha Fun, an azure sword slash split it apart, and Gatsuga killed its puppeteer.
  • Hyuga Shinichi and the others attacked the nearby Sunagakure shinobi with earth spikes and Kikaichū after returning and spotting the brothers.

Ch. 113Worse Than Useless

Hyuga Shinichi confronted Uchiha Fun after Fun abandoned his poisoned younger brother, Uchiha Zuho, and defeated him in a sword fight. Shinichi then carried Zuho to seek medical treatment, hoping there was still time to save him.

  • Hyuga Shinichi found Uchiha Zuho poisoned and saw Uchiha Fun leave without checking on his younger brother.
  • Hyuga Shinichi insulted Uchiha Fun for abandoning Zuho, provoking Fun to attack him.
  • Hyuga Shinichi blocked Fun’s sword strikes and broke his Sharingan genjutsu by controlling his own chakra flow.
  • Hyuga Shinichi kicked Uchiha Fun down, then lifted Uchiha Zuho onto his back and headed for the medical unit.

Ch. 114Hyuga Shinichi's Anger

Hyuga Shinichi stopped Uchiha Fun’s attempt to kill him, and Konoha’s commanders arranged treatment for the poisoned shinobi and changes to the war effort. Hatake Sakumo carried intelligence and Uchiha Fun back to the village while Tsunade traveled to the Sunagakure front.

  • Uchiha Fun hurled shuriken at Hyuga Shinichi, who dodged them and overwhelmed him with pressure until Hatake Sakumo and Uchiha Zuho called for him to stop.
  • Hatake Sakumo ordered Uchiha Fun imprisoned after learning he had watched his younger brother die and then attacked Hyuga Shinichi.
  • Hyuga Shinichi proposed bringing Tsunade to treat the poisoned Konoha shinobi, and Yuhi Shinku approved the plan.
  • Yuhi Shinku arranged for Hatake Sakumo to take intelligence and Uchiha Fun back to Konoha and escort supplies to the Land of Rain.

Ch. 115Friends?

The Third Kazekage planned a secret invasion of the Land of Fire while Sunagakure attacked Konoha forces in the Land of Rain, unaware that Hatake Sakumo would stop the mission. At Konoha’s encampment, Hyuga Shinichi urged Tsunade to save the gravely poisoned Uchiha Zuho, who realized Shinichi cared about him and wondered if he had friends.

  • The Third Kazekage gathered the Land of Wind Daimyos and Sunagakure elders, then proposed invading the Land of Fire while Sunagakure fought Konoha in the Land of Rain.
  • The Third Kazekage selected Chiyo's son to command the invasion and Chiyo's daughter-in-law to assist him, and the chosen shinobi accepted the mission.
  • Hatake Sakumo had been secretly recalled to Konoha by Yuhi Shinku, and his team would intercept the invasion force and destroy it.
  • Hyuga Shinichi asked Tsunade whether the severely poisoned Uchiha Zuho could be saved, and Tsunade said he might survive if they prepared an antidote in time.
  • Hyuga Shinichi urged Tsunade to make the antidote, but she continued examining other patients and sent him away.
  • Uchiha Zuho watched Hyuga Shinichi leave, felt a tear fall, and wondered whether he had friends before sinking back into sleep.

Ch. 116Sunagakure's Action

Sunagakure launched attacks against Konoha on multiple fronts while Amegakure assaulted Konoha’s forces in the Land of Rain. Hatake Sakumo left the hospital before Inuzuka Oto gave birth to lead a force against Sunagakure’s invasion of the Land of Fire.

  • Sunagakure dispatched supplies and reinforcements to the Land of Rain and sent another force through the Land of Rivers toward the Land of Fire.

  • Amegakure and Sunagakure attacked Konoha’s forces in the Land of Rain, while Sunagakure invaded the Land of Fire from the Land of Rivers.
  • Sarutobi Hiruzen assigned Hatake Sakumo to defend against the invasion, and Sakumo led a team toward the border.

Ch. 117The Great Battle Continues

Tsunade’s antidote restored most of Konoha’s poisoned shinobi, but Sunagakure attacked as they prepared to withdraw the injured. Hyuga Shinichi turned back the puppet masters on the left flank while Hatake Sakumo devastated the Sunagakure force attacking the Land of Fire.

  • Tsunade developed an antidote for Chiyo’s poison, and Konoha sent shinobi who still needed care to Uzumaki Hospital.
  • Sunagakure launched a renewed attack, and Konoha’s forces fought back despite many shinobi still needing rest.
  • Hyuga Shinichi used Wind Wall and Great Breakthrough to repel the puppet masters’ senbon and send their attack back at them.
  • Hyuga Shinichi, Inuzuka Gai, Aburame Tomohiro, and Nawaki pressed into the fight as Pakura’s captain rescued her from a Konoha shinobi.
  • The Sunagakure commander chose to hold the battlefield while the attack on the Land of Fire remained uncertain.
  • Hatake Sakumo cut through Sunagakure’s forces, shattered their puppets, and killed Chiyo’s daughter-in-law and her husband.

Ch. 118Sunagakure's Defeat

Hatake Sakumo reflected on the family he had destroyed while stopping Sunagakure’s attack, and Sunagakure’s leaders decided to seek peace after learning Konoha had reinforced the front and Tsunade had neutralized Chiyo’s poison. Konoha agreed to negotiate, and the two nations reached a settlement as their forces withdrew.

  • Hatake Sakumo saw a family photograph of Chiyo’s son, daughter-in-law, and young Sasori, and understood the grief his actions had caused.
  • The Third Kazekage learned Sunagakure’s attack had failed, Konoha was sending reinforcements, and Tsunade had neutralized Chiyo’s poison.
  • The Third Kazekage decided to seek peace with Konoha and keep Chiyo unaware that her son and daughter-in-law had died.
  • Sarutobi Hiruzen persuaded Konoha’s leaders to negotiate with the Land of Wind rather than continue the war.
  • Sunagakure and Konoha withdrew their forces and agreed that the Land of Wind would compensate the Land of Fire for its losses.

Ch. 119Cleaning Up and Returning to the Village

After the ceasefire between Konoha and Sunagakure, Hyuga Shinichi and his friends returned to Konoha while another force departed for the Land of Rain. There, Inuzuka Gai learned that his sister had given birth to a son and rushed to meet his nephew.

  • Dan Katō and Sunagakure’s representative signed the ceasefire agreement, and Yuhi Shinku told the camp who would head to the Land of Rain and who would return to Konoha.
  • Hyuga Shinichi, Nawaki, Inuzuka Gai, and Aburame Tomohiro traveled back toward Konoha and teased Gai about becoming an uncle.
  • Hyuga Shinichi reflected that he had surpassed Hatake Kakashi’s records for graduating from the Ninja Academy and becoming a Chunin and Jonin.
  • The returning force reached Konoha as Hatake Sakumo departed for the Land of Rain with supplies.
  • Hatake Sakumo told Inuzuka Gai that Gai’s sister had given birth to a boy, and Gai rushed to Uzumaki Hospital to see his nephew.
  • Hyuga Shinichi and Aburame Tomohiro congratulated Hatake Sakumo on the birth of his son.

Ch. 120Visiting

Hyuga Shinichi visited the newborn Hatake Kakashi and the unconscious Uchiha Zuho at the hospital. Two days later, he met Namikaze Minato at the waterfall after Minato returned from Mount Myoboku, and offered to treat him to ramen.

  • Hyuga Shinichi and Aburame Tomohiro visited Inuzuka Oto and learned that her newborn son was named Hatake Kakashi.
  • Inuzuka Gai argued with Inuzuka Kotsu until he was allowed to see his nephew, and Shinichi noticed Kakashi had inherited Oto's mole.
  • Shinichi, Aburame Tomohiro, and Inuzuka Gai visited the unconscious Uchiha Zuho and spoke with his mother, Uchiha Kaori.
  • Two days later, Shinichi trained at the waterfall and was surprised when Namikaze Minato returned from Mount Myoboku.
  • Minato told Shinichi that he had learned sage techniques but struggled to use them, and complained about the insect meals he had eaten during training.
  • Shinichi put an arm around Minato and offered to treat him to ramen.

Ch. 121Half a Year Later

Namikaze Minato demonstrated that he had learned to use the Flying Thunder God technique, and half a year later Hyuga Shinichi’s team was patrolling the border while Konoha and Sunagakure remained deadlocked against Amegakure. The chapter ended with Pakura bringing her badly wounded captain to a cave, where he told her he could not be saved.

  • Namikaze Minato showed Hyuga Shinichi that he could teleport to a Flying Thunder God mark within ten meters.
  • Hyuga Shinichi encouraged Minato, who admitted he had not yet fully mastered the technique.
  • Half a year later, Hyuga Shinichi, Aburame Tomohiro, Inuzuka Gai, and Black Charcoal patrolled the border between the Land of Fire and the Land of Rivers as the war with Amegakure continued.
  • Inuzuka Gai asked when the war might end, and Hyuga Shinichi predicted that Konoha would remain caught up in it for about another year.
  • Pakura carried her injured captain into a secluded cave, where he told her he was beyond saving.

Ch. 122Pakura in Desperate Straits

Pakura mourned her captain and prepared to avenge her squad by strengthening her flames with Wind Style as Amegakure ninja cornered her. On the main battlefield, Rasa discovered that he had awakened Magnet Release while fighting an Amegakure ninja.

  • The captain died after telling Pakura to recover the intelligence, and Pakura collapsed in grief over her dead squadmates.
  • Amegakure ninja entered the cave to kill Pakura, who resolved to avenge her companions and began combining Wind Style chakra with her flames.
  • Amegakure ninja ambushed Sunagakure's flank, but Ebizo's forces quickly responded.
  • Rasa was injured while dodging an attack, then used shuriken to fight back as he realized he could redirect them with Magnet Release.
  • An Amegakure ninja attacked Rasa while he wondered why his Magnet Release did not control the shuriken as smoothly as the Third Kazekage's iron sand.

Ch. 123Magnetic Release

Rasa awakened Magnet Release by controlling gold dust from a river, defeated an Amegakure ninja, and learned that Chiyo and Ebizo planned to report him to the Third Kazekage for personal instruction. The story then returned to Pakura, who woke in a cave surrounded by fallen Amegakure ninja and wondered what had happened.

  • Rasa used Magnet Release to gather river gold dust into a sphere, then tightened it around an Amegakure ninja until the man collapsed.
  • Chiyo arrived with reinforcements and recognized Rasa's ability as Magnet Release, while the Amegakure ninja withdrew from the battlefield.
  • Chiyo and Ebizo questioned Rasa and discovered that he could control gold dust, which Ebizo realized could bring strategic wealth to Sunagakure.
  • Ebizo and Chiyo told Rasa they would send him to Sunagakure to receive instruction from the Third Kazekage, and Rasa eagerly welcomed the news.
  • Pakura woke in the cave, formed a small fireball, and saw Amegakure ninja sprawled across the ground.

Ch. 124Scorch Release

Pakura discovered that her altered fireballs drained moisture from living bodies and named the new ability Scorch Release before setting out to deliver the intelligence scroll. At the Land of Fire border, Hyuga Shinichi noticed Uchiha Fugaku and other Uchiha ninja in camp, then went to collect food for his sleeping teammates and Black Charcoal.

  • Pakura examined the dried corpses in the cave and realized her fireball had become hotter as the cave’s water and moisture disappeared.
  • Pakura tested her fireball on a rat and watched it shrivel into a dried corpse, leading her to suspect she had awakened a Kekkei Genkai.
  • Pakura named the fused fire-and-wind ability Scorch Release and vowed to deliver the intelligence scroll for her captain.
  • Hyuga Shinichi returned to camp with Inuzuka Gai, Aburame Tomohiro, and Black Charcoal after their patrol and noticed unfamiliar ninja there.
  • Hyuga Shinichi later saw Uchiha Fugaku leading Uchiha ninja around camp, then went to get food for his sleeping companions.

Ch. 125Konoha, Year 39

In Konoha Year 39, Sunagakure trained Rasa while Pakura grew stronger on the battlefield, and Konoha advanced into the Land of Rain until Hanzo intervened. Hanzo fought Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade as he recognized that Amegakure was nearing defeat.

  • Sunagakure's leaders trained Rasa as a future Kazekage, while Ebizo concealed from Chiyo that her son and daughter-in-law had died fighting Hatake Sakumo.
  • Pakura refused to return to Sunagakure for training and reached Jonin-level strength after a year of fighting, while Rasa's combat strength barely increased.
  • Hatake Sakumo's supply missions helped Konoha push into the Land of Rain, prompting Hanzo to take the field and halt their advance near Amegakure.
  • Hanzo attacked Jiraiya, Orochimaru, and Tsunade with Explosive Tag kunai, but Tsunade blocked them and Jiraiya's interference spoiled Hanzo's follow-up.
  • Salamander Ibuse knocked Jiraiya away, and Hanzo assessed that Amegakure was faltering against Konoha's superior resources and faced defeat.
