Xing Tian was getting impatient. In his previous life, he would have slapped Osler flying long ago.
But in this life, he wasn't alone, so all he could do was say helplessly, "It's not what you think. I'm a relative of Grandpa Ye Renxin. He wrote me a letter of recommendation so I could enter the academy. I'm here to find Sister Lingling."
Osler sprang to his feet and brushed the dust off himself, then said with sudden understanding, "Oh~ So you're the one! I've heard about you from Dugu Yan before. She said your talent was the best in the world. At first I didn't believe her, but now I do."
"You know Sister Lingling and Sister Yan?"
Xing Tian's expression visibly softened.
Osler smoothed his hair and said with a somewhat cocky air, "Of course. We were all Tianwei Level students before—not only were we in the same class, but Ye Lingling and I hunted our second Soul Rings together. Dugu Yan has already advanced to Tianzhu Level, but I'm confident I can reach Tianzhu Level within a year and a half too."
"But speaking of Ye Lingling, she really is talented and hardworking. Even though she's a Support Type, her cultivation speed is on par with mine."
Osler started getting carried away again, throwing an arm around Xing Tian's shoulders.
Xing Tian brushed his hand away in distaste. "Got it. I'm going to find Sister Lingling."
Osler hurried after him. "You just got here, so you must not know your way around the academy. I'll show you. Ye Lingling only goes to a few places. Since today's a rest day, if she's on campus, she's either cultivating in her dorm or reading in the library."
Having someone show him around would certainly make things easier, so Xing Tian agreed and chose to go to the library first.
As soon as he entered the library, Xing Tian understood what Dugu Bo had told him earlier.
Most students at Heaven Dou Royal Academy really were good-for-nothings. The library was nearly empty, and quite a few people weren't reading books about Soul Master cultivation at all, but storybooks. Some were even just here on dates.
Luckily, Ye Lingling was reading in a quiet corner. There was no hint of any other emotion in her expression; all he could see in her was loneliness.
Seeing Xing Tian head toward a nearby bookshelf, Osler asked, puzzled, "Aren't you going over?"
"Of course I chose the library first because there are books I want to read."
Xing Tian answered calmly as he searched for the books he wanted.
Osler offered eagerly, "What are you looking for? I'll find them for you!"
Xing Tian's hand paused almost imperceptibly. "Are there any books about the Titled Douluo currently on the continent? And books about Soul Tools."
"Figures!"
Osler looked as if he'd suddenly realized something. "You have Innate Full Soul Power. Unless something unexpected happens, you'll definitely become a Titled Douluo. It's only natural to want to learn about the seniors who came before you."
Then he suddenly looked delighted. "Does that mean I'll have a Titled Douluo for a roommate? Xiao Tian, you'll have to look out for me in the future."
Xing Tian could only humor him. "Mm-hmm, mm-hmm. Just help me find the books first."
Osler was just overly familiar, talkative, and restless, but he wasn't a bad person. He hadn't picked on the newcomer, and from beginning to end he hadn't said anything about inviting Xing Tian to join his family or the like.
Osler quickly found two books for Xing Tian, but compared with the others, they were pitifully thin.
"There are so few publicly known Titled Douluo that you can count them on your fingers. Most of them also come from major powers, which keep their affairs closely guarded. Even the Heaven Dou Imperial Family knows very little. These will have to do."
"And this one's about Soul Tools. I really don't get why you want it."
"The techniques for making Soul Tools have been lost. The ones in circulation nowadays are mostly for storage or civilian use."
"The Soul Master World puts more emphasis on cultivating one's own Martial Soul. You're getting things backwards. You have Innate Full Soul Power; you shouldn't waste your time and energy on this."
"Just leave it," Xing Tian said, taking the two books and heading toward Ye Lingling. Osler could only follow helplessly.
Although many people in the library hadn't come to study in earnest, they were still nobles, and they had a keen sense for certain things.
Osler's talent ranked among the best in the academy, and his elders held no low-ranking titles. It was suspicious enough that he was following someone else around.
And the two were heading toward Ye Lingling. Everyone knew she was a famous ice queen. Apart from a tiny handful of outstanding students, she wouldn't even speak to anyone.
"May I sit here?"
Normally, Ye Lingling wouldn't have bothered responding to those words. But she knew that voice very well. She looked up sharply and saw a familiar, yet somewhat unfamiliar, face across from her.
"Xiao Tian! You're here!"
Ye Lingling's face instantly bloomed into a smile. Even with her veil on, her joy and beauty were unmistakable.
Osler was stunned. Was the person in front of him really Ye Lingling?
He knew the two of them were acquainted, but this was blatant favoritism. Ye Lingling was the famous ice-cold goddess; she'd never even smiled at a boy before, not even when facing a teacher.
Seeing Osler beside them, Ye Lingling quickly returned to her usual self, though the corners of her mouth still curved slightly upward. "Go ahead and sit. You too, Osler."
Osler moved fast, pulling out two chairs at once. Smiling at Xing Tian, he said, "I'm getting special treatment thanks to you today. If I tell Yu Feng about this, that bird-brain will be furious! Hahahaha!"
Osler laughed a little too loudly, and Xing Tian cut him off. "This is a library!"
Osler quickly covered his mouth and lowered his head. "Sorry, I just can't help it when I think of Yu Feng's face later. Heh heh heh!"
Ye Lingling asked, "What level are you now?"
Before Xing Tian could answer, Osler jumped in. "He's level 21. What a monster!"
Xing Tian didn't say anything; he just gave Osler a look and let him figure it out for himself.
"You two chat, you two chat."
Osler gave an awkward smile and pretended to be very interested in the book in his hands.
Just then, Ye Lingling noticed the two books Xing Tian had chosen and asked, puzzled, "Titled Douluo? These books don't contain much information, just a few events. Soul Tools? You're interested in those too?"
Xing Tian replied, "Yes. Titled Douluo are at the pinnacle of Soul Masters, so naturally I want to learn about them. As for Soul Tools, I think they have tremendous potential. If Soul Masters could combine their abilities with Soul Tools, their fighting strength would surely leap to a whole new level."
Ye Lingling smiled. "If you want to learn about Titled Douluo, why not ask Senior Dugu? He knows more than what's written in books."
"As for Soul Tools, the methods for making them have almost all been lost. Nearly all the Soul Tools we have today were found while exploring ruins."
"With almost no foundation to work from, developing a systematic body of knowledge about Soul Tools is harder than reaching the heavens. But if you succeed, your name will surely be passed down through the ages."
The two didn't continue talking. Instead, they lowered their heads and read, leaving Osler at a loss. But he didn't sense any awkwardness between them; in fact, they seemed perfectly at ease.
