Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Level 92 Title Douluo — pre-breakthrough level 2 14 Already a Title Douluo when he helps Jiang He's family. His earlier level is established retrospectively by his three-level rise to level 95. Accumulated Martial Soul poison forces him to devote Soul Power to suppressing it.
Level 95 Super Douluo 9 14 Absorbs the Octagonal Mysterious Ice Grass and Infernal Delicate Apricot over five months. The herbs repair his Martial Soul's flaw, cleanse his body and Soul Power, and form a miniature Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well within him. Released suppression power and the herbs' effects raise him three levels.

Background / History

Family Loss and Jiang He's Rescue

Dugu Bo loses his son to Jade Phosphor Snake Poison, leaving him and his granddaughter, Dugu Yan, dependent on each other. His son's Martial Soul had granted Innate Soul Power of level nine and the potential to become a Title Douluo, but its poisonous flaw proved fatal 2 10.

While passing through Sunset Forest, Dugu Bo intervenes when a powerful Soul Beast attacks a Heaven Dou Royal Academy hunting party. He saves the students and returns Jiang He's mortally wounded parents to the academy, though neither survives. Recognizing the orphaned boy's isolation, he gives Jiang He a Soul Master Awakening Preparation Manual. His acknowledgment of the parents' sacrifice helps Jiang He receive the academy's highest compensation and additional care 2.

Immortal Herb Theft and Detoxification

Dugu Bo keeps the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well secret, even from Dugu Yan. Jiang He nevertheless enters its poison barrier and steals four Immortal Herbs. Dugu Bo later reveals that he had watched the theft and secretly helped the boy survive the barrier out of curiosity; Jiang He's precautions had not deceived him 2 3 11.

When confronted, Jiang He identifies the Martial Soul poisoning affecting Dugu Bo and Dugu Yan and proposes a cure using two herbs at the well. Dugu Bo respects his determination but remains suspicious. Before attempting treatment, he has his cultivated Bamboo Leaf Green snake bite Jiang He and provides a pill that supposedly delays death for seven days. Jiang He interprets this as a contingency intended to force him to find a cure for Dugu Yan if Dugu Bo dies during treatment 8 9.

After five months, Dugu Bo emerges detoxified, rejuvenated, and considerably stronger. The treatment does not destroy his poison arts: instead, his Martial Soul reabsorbs the accumulated toxins and becomes more complete. He then consults Jiang He about Dugu Yan's condition and agrees to use Nine-Grade Purple Ganoderma, keeping other herbs available for future needs 9 10 14.

Taking a Disciple

Dugu Bo accepts Jiang He as his only disciple after recognizing both his courage and his understanding of power and influence. He values the boy's intelligence enough to believe that, even without exceptional cultivation talent, Jiang He could help establish a family and support Dugu Yan. He then conducts Jiang He's formal Martial Soul awakening, discovering a mutated Dark Gold Terrorclaw Bear and Innate Soul Power of rank twenty 11.

Although initially reluctant to permit unusually old Soul Rings, Dugu Bo supports Jiang He's first two ten-thousand-year ring hunts and guards him during absorption. He subsequently arranges his enrollment at Heaven Dou Royal Academy alongside Dugu Yan, openly displaying pride in his disciple's talent 12 13 14 16 18 19.

Later Guidance and Faction Negotiations

A year later, Dugu Bo helps Jiang He obtain his third Soul Ring from an Armor-Piercing Earth Dragon. When the absorption appears dangerous, he prepares to interrupt it, only to witness the emergence of Jiang He's External Soul Bone. Jiang He's self-created movement skills further convince him of his disciple's future potential 38 39 40 41.

Recognizing that a hundred-thousand-year Soul Beast hunt will require outside assistance, Dugu Bo considers Spirit Hall and the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect. He warns Jiang He about Crown Prince Xue Qinghe's ruthlessness, then negotiates with his longtime rival Yue Guan on the boy's behalf. Despite disliking Spirit Hall, he regards its strength and precedent for outsiders becoming Pope as meaningful advantages. He nevertheless accepts that Jiang He may choose to remain independent 41 42 48 49.

Dugu Bo also passes on information about the imperial family's proposed tournament Soul Bone reward and Prince Xue Xing's recruitment plans. He insists that Jiang He need not accept humiliation or unwanted obligations merely to obtain resources 57.

Appearance

  • Hair and beard: Return to ink-black after his five-month Immortal Herb treatment 9.
  • Rejuvenation: Emerges looking substantially younger than before treatment 9.
  • Martial Soul manifestation: A phantom of the Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor appears behind him during combat 13 16 39.
  • Soul Rings: Two yellow, two purple, and five black rings 16.

Personality

Dugu Bo is suspicious, blunt, and protective of his secrets. Having encountered many schemes during his rise to Title Douluo, he refuses to trust Jiang He's proposed cure without precautions. He repeatedly tells his disciple to speak plainly rather than evade a question 8 12 17.

His severity coexists with sympathy and fierce loyalty. Shared bereavement prompts his early kindness toward Jiang He, while the boy's courage and intelligence earn his lasting affection. As a master, he gives practical support, watches over dangerous breakthroughs, and negotiates with an old rival for his disciple's future 2 11 14 40 49.

Dugu Bo takes obvious pleasure in boasting about Jiang He and needling fellow Title Douluos. His attempts at modesty fail to conceal his pride, and he eagerly seeks repayment for years of being suppressed by Yue Guan 18 19 41.

Abilities & Skills

Jade Phosphorous Serpent Emperor

Dugu Bo's Martial Soul is the basis of his poison specialization and nine-ring cultivation 13 16.

  • Originally produces poison that accumulates in his own body as his cultivation increases 14.
  • Becomes more complete after the paired Immortal Herbs repair its flaw 14.
  • Reabsorbs the toxins previously accumulated in his body and Soul Power, strengthening its poison 14.
  • Allows him to infuse poison into Soul Power for combat and withdraw it into the Martial Soul during ordinary life without harming himself 14.

Fourth Soul Skill: Death Arrow

The Serpent Emperor fires a purple-green arrow carrying death poison 13.

  • Slows and progressively weakens its target as the poison erodes the body.
  • Becomes fatal when the poison reaches the heart.
  • Used to incapacitate the Berserk Giant Ape so Jiang He can deliver the killing blow 13.

Sixth Soul Skill: Corrosive Serpent Attack

A massive Serpent Emperor phantom bites the target and delivers rapidly destructive poison 16.

  • Blackens flesh and causes it to decay and fall away.
  • Corrodes the Ancient Terror Bear's legs down to the bone, leaving it unable to resist Jiang He's finishing attack 16.

Eighth Soul Skill: Time Freeze

Dugu Bo freezes a target and its immediate surroundings in time 16.

  • Stops the fleeing Ancient Terror Bear.
  • Also immobilizes the trees within a ten-meter radius.
  • Creates an opening for his sixth Soul Skill 16.

Poison Mist and Barriers

Dugu Bo uses poisonous mist both to defend his territory and attack opponents 2 39.

  • Defensive barrier: Guards the Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well; its poison primarily acts after entering an intruder's body 2.
  • Offensive mist: Envelops opponents and poisons them through inhalation; it can also corrode targets that do not breathe 39.
  • Armor bypass: Subdues the heavily armored Earth Dragon without needing to break its scales through direct attacks 39.
  • Threat to weaker opponents: His poison makes him exceptionally dangerous to ordinary Soul Masters and groups below the Title Douluo rank 17 20.

Miniature Ice and Fire Yin-Yang Well

The paired Immortal Herbs create a small spring within Dugu Bo's body 9 14.

  • Contributes to the further development of his poison arts 41.
  • Helps him gain an edge in actual combat despite weaknesses against equally ranked opponents 49.
  • In Jiang He's system simulation, may allow him to defeat a hundred-thousand-year Soul Beast through attrition, but does not reliably prevent the beast from escaping 49.

Spiritual Power, Flight, and Suppression

  • Uses his aura to immobilize Jiang He and suppress Soul Beasts 8 13.
  • Clears Jiang He's aggressive post-awakening state with a cold snort and released aura 12.
  • Flies while carrying Jiang He between hunting grounds and the academy 13 38.
  • Monitors the surroundings with Spiritual Power during Soul Ring absorption 40.
  • Recovers almost immediately from Jiang He's Stomp, though the unexpected skill briefly stuns him 17.

Combat Limitations

  • Is mockingly regarded as the weakest Title Douluo before his improvement; Chen Xin treats him dismissively 13 18.
  • Remains less effective against equal-ranked opponents than against weaker enemies, even at level 95 49.
  • Has no reliable solo solution for hunting physically powerful hundred-thousand-year Soul Beasts, prompting him to seek other Title Douluos' assistance 41 44 49.
  • Cannot safely guarantee that interrupting an excessive Soul Ring absorption will prevent permanent physical or mental injury 14.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Secret Treasure Record — Examines the text supplied by Jiang He and uses its herb descriptions when considering treatment for himself and Dugu Yan 8 10.

Relationships

  • Unnamed son — Died from Jade Phosphor Snake Poison. Had Innate Soul Power of level nine and attended Heaven Dou Royal Academy in the same intake as Jiang He's father 10.

  • Chen Xin / Sword Douluo — Familiar fellow Title Douluo and target of Dugu Bo's competitive teasing, particularly over their respective protégés 18 19.

Trivia

  • Dugu Bo initially estimates the Ancient Terror Bear at nineteen thousand years old; Jiang He's system identifies it as approximately 20,900 years old 16.
  • His seventh Soul Ring is only slightly over forty thousand years old, making Jiang He's nearly forty-thousand-year third ring especially alarming to him 40.
  • For years, he guards the very herbs capable of curing his family's poisoning without recognizing their value 10.
