Background / History

Daoist Lingguan grew up in Shangqing Palace and devoted himself exclusively to the Dao from childhood. Two years before recruiting the gifted individuals of Mount Lao, he entered a dungeon alone, made his way up the mountain, and apprenticed under a master, discovering that the Great Dao was attainable. 95

Following his first dungeon experience, he resolved to revive Shangqing Palace and the Mount Lao sect. He traded dungeon-entry quotas to the Special Affairs Department in return for rights to use Shangqing Palace and Mount Lao, as well as permission to re-establish the Mount Lao Sect. With his master's blessing to open a sect and transmit the Shangqing orthodoxy, he invited the gifted individuals who had entered the dungeon to join him. 95

Daoist Lingguan is a towering man over two meters tall, broad-backed and powerfully built. Despite his imposing frame, he is handsome rather than crude, with fair jade-like skin carrying a faint golden sheen. 94

Establishment of the Mount Lao Sect

He consolidated Mount Lao's existing temples into a structure of three palaces, five mansions, and twelve Taoist temples. Lingguan personally oversaw Shangqing Palace, the Upper Palace, while retaining final authority over the sect's branches. 426

Recognizing that Mount Lao's short modern history left it weaker in prestige than ancient Daoist lineages, Lingguan dispatched leading disciples to major Daoist centers. Ling Qing went to the Celestial Master Mansion, Zhu Guang to White Cloud Temple, Zhang Zhe to Wudang Mountain, and Bai Zhiyuan to Mount Qingcheng. 408

Transformation of the Demon Sect

Lingguan fought Xiao Mo when the latter attempted to escape through self-destruction and demonic escape arts. He neutralized Xiao Mo's detonated heavenly demons with his ruyi and ultimately prevailed. 522

Afterward, he eradicated the Demon Sect's rival Devil Masters, transformed the sect into the Heaven-Reaching Dao Sect, and became its sect master under the title Heaven-Reaching Dao Master. 533

Bearing the Sect's Fortune

Lingguan explains that the head of a sect must shoulder the consequences of its disciples' actions, whether good or evil.
