Compared to the threefold increase in battle power after he'd been revived from the brink of death following his last fight with the androids, this time's increase seemed modest. Still, there was a reason for it.
That last battle had been the first time in Sun Yu's life that he'd faced death. It was no exaggeration to say his injuries had been so severe that he'd been halfway through the gates of the underworld. Being brought back from that state had caused the energy lying dormant within him to explode in growth.
This time, although Lana had badly hurt him after her Great Ape Transformation, his injuries hadn't been life-threatening. So after he recovered, his battle power didn't rise by anything like as much as before.
Even so, Sun Yu's battle power had reached a hundred thousand. But when he looked at the two rampaging beasts before him, his heart sank. There was no point even mentioning Ace, who had transformed into a giant wolf; Lana alone had a battle power of 1.2 million after her Great Ape Transformation. Sun Yu wasn't even a fraction of that. Life was just too hard!
At least things hadn't yet escalated into a scene where the two monsters joined forces to destroy the world. If they did, Sun Yu would have no choice but to blast the moon with a Kamehameha. But the moon was 380,000 kilometers from Earth. Could a single Kamehameha really knock it down? Don't try to fool me—I haven't read enough books to know better!
As the saying went, one mountain couldn't hold two tigers. After the Great Ape Lana and the giant wolf Ace exchanged glances, they started fighting. Their battle shook the earth, leaving Sun Yu unable to get within thirty feet of them.
Their conversation probably went something like this:
"Stupid wolf, what're you staring at?"
"What're you staring at me for?"
"Think I won't beat you up? Go on, try staring at me again!"
"Gladly..."
Then they started fighting. Sun Yu tried several times to sneak up behind them and cut off their tails, but the anime had lied! Weren't they supposed to lose intelligence and become slow to react after transforming? Sun Yu found that Lana's speed, strength, reflexes, and all her other abilities were ten times what they'd been in her normal form!
So while Lana held the giant wolf Ace by the head with one hand and slammed him into the ground, she swatted at Sun Yu with the other as easily as if she were batting away a fly. She wasn't under the slightest pressure!
It wasn't that Sun Yu was too weak. The gap in their battle power spoke for itself. Unless he could catch Lana off guard and use a Destructo Disc like Krillin, it would be incredibly hard to get a chance to cut off her tail.
"Damn it, if only I could transform into a Great Ape without losing my mind, like Vegeta..." Sun Yu muttered from a distance. Then, halfway through his complaint, he suddenly thought of something and cried out happily, "I can do it! I've got a plan!"
Before the words had even left his mouth, Sun Yu powered up and flew toward Bulma. He found her crouched on the roof, secretly watching the fight in the distance, and asked, "Bulma, where are the Dragon Balls? Where did you put the ones I collected?"
Bulma tilted her head and thought for a moment. "In the little black cat's bed. It sleeps with them every day!"
Oh, come on! Sun Yu felt awful when he heard that. Even if he hadn't used them to make a wish, they didn't have to toss them to a cat to play with! They were Dragon Balls! Dragon Balls! They could summon Shenron—they weren't toys!
"Forget it. I'll take you home first. Just bear with it for a bit." Sun Yu felt like he'd run out of things to complain about.
Then he channeled all his ki, held Bulma close to his chest, and flew at full speed toward the Briefs' house.
The area around the East City Grand Department Store was already swarming with reporters, and the military would probably arrive soon. He had to resolve this before those people came rushing over to get themselves killed.
Before long, Sun Yu reached the Briefs' courtyard. After setting Bulma down, he rushed over to the little black cat's wooden house and flipped off its roof. The frightened cat shot away in a flash.
Thankfully, all seven Dragon Balls were lying quietly in the cat's bed. Sun Yu took them out, placed them in the courtyard, then drew a deep breath and loudly called out the words to summon Shenron: "Come forth, Shenron!"
"Vmmmm..."
At Sun Yu's summons, the seven Dragon Balls immediately shone with a brilliant light. Mr. and Mrs. Briefs also came to stand beside Bulma. Seeing how focused Sun Yu was, they didn't disturb him, but quietly watched what was happening.
"Come forth, Shenron! Grant my wish!"
At Sun Yu's resounding cry, dark clouds suddenly blanketed the sky, and lightning flashed and thunder roared. Fortunately, it was already night, so the strange spectacle didn't attract anyone else's attention.
"Whoosh..."
The seven Dragon Balls suddenly shone with a blinding light. A golden bolt of lightning shot out from them, twisting and spiraling through the air until it gradually took the shape of a gigantic figure.
Sun Yu stood in place, quietly watching it all unfold. Shenron's appearance in real life was far more astonishing than in the anime. His immense frame was especially imposing, making Sun Yu feel tiny by comparison.
"Speak your wish..." Shenron opened his mouth and spoke in a deep, resonant voice.
Sun Yu said solemnly, "I'm a Saiyan. When I see the full moon, I transform into a Great Ape and lose my mind. My wish is to control the power of the Great Ape Transformation, so I can transform whenever I want without losing my mind!"
If Sun Yu could master the ability to transform into an ape at will, it would give him another powerful trump card before he became a Super Saiyan. Besides, legend had it that becoming a Super Saiyan required transforming into a Golden Great Ape.
Sun Yu could simply have asked Shenron to cut off Lana and Ace's tails. That would have been no trouble for him. But Sun Yu was a Saiyan, and his innate fighting instinct meant that if he could solve something with his fists, he'd never waste time talking.
"Apologies, but what you've asked for counts as two wishes..." A cloud of vapor billowed from Shenron's mouth as he spoke in a solemn voice. "You must choose either the ability to transform at will or the ability to retain your reason!"
"Damn it!" Sun Yu ground his teeth in anger. His battle power of a hundred thousand erupted, and his overwhelming aura surged into the sky. He roared at Shenron, "Don't try to bargain with me! Think I won't kill you? We can just have the Guardian make another Shenron afterward. I'm great friends with the Guardian!"
Feeling Sun Yu's sudden outburst of power, Shenron's huge body shrank back a little despite himself. A bead of cold sweat appeared on his forehead. "I never expected you to know the Guardian's name..."
"Talk normally! Don't spout that ancient nonsense—I can't understand you!" Sun Yu bellowed at Shenron in exasperation.
"Yes, I... understand." Shenron's enormous head lowered slightly, and he no longer seemed nearly as arrogant as before.
There was no helping it. Shenron knew his life was in someone else's hands, so he could only bow to the forces of evil.
"Sir... it's not that I don't want to grant your wish. That's simply how I was made. Even if you kill me, there's nothing I can do!" Shenron was so anxious that cold sweat poured down his forehead.
Sun Yu's eyes turned cold. He formed a small ball of light in his hand and said, "Then die!"
"Wait..." Shenron had curled into a ball in fright. He considered himself to have lived long enough, and everyone who met him had always been respectful. How had he ended up running into a maniac who started threatening to kill him the moment they met? He'd lost every last bit of dignity a Shenron should have. Just imagine the psychological trauma!
"Any last words?" Sun Yu asked.
"N-no, sir. Your eyes are extraordinary. If I make a few changes to them, I might be able to grant your wish!"
