Shikaku is explicitly portrayed as more decisive, while Inoichi tends to ask what they should do next 198 200.
His uncertainty does not stop him from protecting others. He supports an exhausted Shen Ye during their retreat, remains beside him while Shikaku searches for medicine, and later joins Shikaku at the front rather than letting him face their pursuers alone 208 209 212.

History
Team Assignment and the Sunagakure Trap
Choza introduces Inoichi as his newly assigned teammate alongside Shikaku, identifying their formation as one of Konoha’s longstanding teams 104.
While visiting Sunagakure with Shen Ye and Shikaku, Inoichi encounters an impostor posing as Anko. After Shen Ye secretly communicates his suspicions, Inoichi and Shikaku conceal their alarm and continue accompanying her. The encounter leads to a trap, where Shen Ye substitutes for Choza to form an improvised Ino-Shika-Cho 196.
Inoichi disrupts attackers during the ensuing teahouse battle. When a powerful old man separates Shen Ye from the others, Inoichi fears that losing their main attacker leaves them without their strongest means of resistance 197 198.
Pursuit and Shen Ye’s Recovery
During a subsequent pursuit by Sound Ninja, Inoichi follows Shen Ye’s order to take the right-hand route while the trio splits up to escape 203.
After reuniting, he and Shikaku rush to Shen Ye when they sense trouble, finding him confronted by a young jonin whose strength exceeds their combined capabilities. Inoichi supports Shen Ye after his chakra-draining counterattack, and the group escapes through Shen Ye’s teleportation technique 206 208.
Recognizing the seriousness of Shen Ye’s condition, Inoichi admits that they had relied too heavily on his strength without considering its cost. He stays to care for him while Shikaku searches the devastated village for medicinal herbs. His only Hundred Herbs Pill has already been used 209 210 211.
Rescue of the Elders
When their pursuers return, Inoichi stands beside Shikaku and Shen Ye against the encirclement. Later, Teacher Konoha covers Inoichi and Shikaku as they search separately for captive elders. The trio rescues the elders, though Shen Ye’s weakened condition continues to concern his companions 212 220 221.
Following their journey through a tunnel, Inoichi shares the group’s disturbing discovery that they can no longer remember the mysterious enemy’s appearance 226.
Growing Distance
At the Chunin Exams, Inoichi and Shikaku recognize how far Shen Ye has surpassed them in only a few months. What had once been a manageable difference in strength now feels overwhelming 266.
Later, Shen Ye reflects that his former closeness with both teammates has faded; their meetings have become brief exchanges of pleasantries 286.
