Background / History

Becoming One of the Sannin

Orochimaru studied under Sarutobi Hiruzen alongside Jiraiya and Tsunade. Hiruzen was particularly fond of him and welcomed his return from training outside Konoha 71.

According to Jiraiya, the trio’s reputation was established after more than a hundred Kirigakure shinobi surrounded them during a war. Orochimaru initially proposed abandoning the injured Jiraiya so that two of them could survive. He unexpectedly reversed his decision and attacked the enemy; after Tsunade treated Jiraiya, all three fought together. Jiraiya never determined why Orochimaru chose to stay 293.

Return to Konoha and Early Betrayal

Orochimaru’s first documented return includes ransacking Tsunade’s home as a “greeting gift.” When she attacks him in the Hokage’s office, he evades her punch and restrains her arm with snakes. He also offers to train Shen Ye, who secretly uses his system to steal Snake-Shaped Shallow Hand from him 71.

During the Thunder Vein mission, Orochimaru alternates between directing the team and leaving Shen Ye uncertain about his intentions. Shen Ye witnesses him enlarge his body and swallow captives, while Orochimaru later rescues Shen Ye, Hizashi, and Tsume from armored soldiers 78 79 81 91.

The discovery of a slaughtered village leads to Orochimaru admitting that he conducted experiments on people after Shen Ye refused to cooperate. He treats the subjects’ physical constitutions as research variables and reveals his use of Konoha shinobi. Jiraiya and Tsunade turn against him, but he escapes their confrontation as a white snake 96 97 99.

Konoha subsequently hunts him across multiple hideouts. He escapes another battle with Jiraiya through substitution and Reverse Summoning, then operates through Sound ninja in the Land of Rice Paddies. His subordinates attempt to capture Shen Ye alive, while his shadow clone personally confronts the boy and loses to his evolved Sharingan and Susanoo 106 110 119 132 145 146 147.

Later Timeline Shift and Defection

The later Konoha sequence presents a changed timeline: when Orochimaru appears after Minato becomes Hokage, Shen Ye’s system explicitly states that more frequent wars have kept Orochimaru at the front lines and that he has not yet developed thoughts of defecting. This differs from the earlier chapters’ established defection and pursuit 106 281.

Orochimaru tries to recruit Shen Ye by offering forbidden ninjutsu, bloodline research, and a Cursed Seal intended to grant immediate access to Sage Mode. He also proposes scientific ninja tools that would let civilians use ninjutsu-like effects without hand seals. Shen Ye rejects the human experimentation behind these ambitions 281 282.

When Konoha moves to arrest Orochimaru for cruel experiments, Shen Ye pursues and nearly kills him. Minato intervenes and removes Orochimaru from the battlefield. Hiruzen later confirms that Orochimaru experimented on prisoners, war criminals, and orphans, while acknowledging his own personal attachment to his disciple 282 283.

Minato explains that he helped Orochimaru escape in an attempt to prevent him from becoming an enemy, though he also admits that letting him go was a wrong decision. Hiruzen secretly orders a pursuit despite Minato’s wishes 284.

Otogakure and the Mount Myoboku Attack

News reaches Mount Myoboku that Orochimaru has obtained Ryūchi Cave’s inheritance and founded Otogakure. Jiraiya explains that Manda’s weakening reincarnations made him susceptible to Orochimaru’s promises of immortality 358 359.

Orochimaru then infiltrates Mount Myoboku and attacks Jiraiya. He claims that observing Jiraiya’s summoning techniques during the war allowed him to learn how to enter the hidden village. He denies that leaving Konoha constitutes betrayal, declaring Otogakure his only faction 368.

His intended show of force escalates into a battle involving the Eight-Headed Serpent. After Shen Ye seals the creature with Planetary Devastation, Orochimaru escapes through his Cursed Seal and assumes a Sage Body. He counters Shen Ye’s attacks with Fivefold Rashomon and summons Hashirama and Tobirama Senju through Impure World Reincarnation 369 370 373 374.

Appearance

  • Pale complexion: Repeatedly described as exceptionally pale 71 120 374.
  • Snake-like eyes: A villager identifies him by eyes resembling a venomous snake’s, apparently devoid of emotion 120.
  • Eye markings: Purple markings surround his eyes and deepen during his later transformations 368 373.
  • Tall, white-robed figure: Wears long white robes during his later meeting with Shen Ye in Konoha 281.
  • Long tongue: Frequently licks his lips while speaking or preparing to attack 368 369 374.
  • Sage Body: Gains forehead horns and a snake tail extending from his lower abdomen; his transformed body lacks visible reproductive organs 373.

Personality

Orochimaru pursues knowledge, power, and ultimately immortality with little regard for the people used in his research. He speaks of experimental subjects in terms of results and physical constitution, and increasingly views Shen Ye as a potential vessel rather than an individual 97 146 372.

His scientific ambitions extend beyond personal strength. He imagines tools that could allow ordinary civilians to cross seas, fly, and use stored energy without conventional ninjutsu training. However, his willingness to experiment on humans makes those ambitions unacceptable to Shen Ye and Konoha 281 282 283.

He is calculating rather than uniformly reckless. He prepares numerous hideouts, uses escape contingencies, and retreats from direct eye contact when confronted by Shen Ye’s Sharingan. That caution briefly works against him: he mistakes Shen Ye’s vulnerable evolution process for preparation for an attack and misses an opportunity to strike 106 146.

Jiraiya describes him as contradictory—longing for longer life while treating life with contempt. His decision to remain with his teammates during their wartime encirclement complicates Jiraiya’s judgment of him, but Orochimaru later declares that he will kill enemies without sentimentality 293 369.

Abilities & Skills

Snake Ninjutsu and Body Manipulation

Orochimaru uses snakes for offense, restraint, deception, and alterations to his own body 71 79 368.

  • Snake-Shaped Shallow Hand: Provides both attack and control; Shen Ye steals the skill through his system 71.
  • Hidden Shadow Multiple Snake Hands: Can attack, defend, and restrain targets at close range, making it useful for capture missions 146.
  • Poisonous snakes: His Striking Shadow Snakes carry a specially prepared poison. Other snakes release corrosive purple blood when destroyed 110 282.
  • Explosive attacks: Evil Snake Wrist Explosion detonates snakes near the opponent 368.
  • Body alteration: Enlarges his body to swallow captives, elongates his neck, and turns his arms into snakes 79 99 374.
  • Localized healing: Uses two small snakes to visibly heal a wound through his foot 369.

Substitution and Escape Techniques

Orochimaru repeatedly survives apparently decisive attacks by abandoning or replacing his damaged body 99 110 370.

  • White-snake escape: Emerges from his motionless body as a white snake after Jiraiya’s Sage Art: Massive Rasengan 99.
  • Serpent Style Substitution: Produces a snake from his mouth, from which another Orochimaru emerges 282 370.
  • Barrier escape: Leaves a seemingly boneless body behind in Jiraiya’s swamp and reappears through a snake outside the barrier 368.
  • Reverse Summoning: Escapes Jiraiya’s pursuit, leaving a tiny snake behind 110.
  • Limit: A snake substitute alone nearly fails against Planetary Devastation; he resorts to applying the Cursed Seal to himself 373.

Rashomon

His summoned gates serve as both defensive barriers and tools for battlefield control 91 282 374.

  • Triple Rashomon: Arranges three gates in a triangle to trap armored soldiers 91.
  • Attack weakening: A crimson gate diminishes Shen Ye’s chakra claws and Rasengan as they pass through it 282.
  • Fivefold Rashomon: Blocks a barrage from Shen Ye’s shadow clones and withstands Wood Release roots and illusion pollen 373 374.
  • Limit: The Fivefold Rashomon approaches collapse under the final backlash of Flower Tree World Emerence 374.

Wind Release and Combat Tactics

Orochimaru combines comparatively simple ninjutsu with positioning and environmental control 91.

  • Great Breakthrough: Uses its gusts to slam armored soldiers into a Rashomon gate when directly damaging their armor is difficult 91.
  • Exceptional output: Shen Ye judges the effect of his C-rank Great Breakthrough to be scarcely inferior to an A-rank technique 91.
  • Blade-like wind: His later Breakthrough tears through the ground during the fight with Jiraiya 368.

Cursed Seal and Senjutsu Research

Orochimaru researches a Cursed Seal intended to let its recipient activate senjutsu power directly in combat 130 281.

  • Research goal: Proposes using Cursed Seal energy as an alternative to chakra in scientific ninja tools 282.
  • Forced application: Attempts to plant the Curse Mark of Heaven on Jiraiya 110.
  • Self-transformation: Successfully applies the seal to himself and gains his Sage Body 373.
  • Risk: States that the seal has only a ten-percent success rate 373.

Summoning and the Eight-Headed Serpent

Orochimaru summons Manda and later demonstrates the Eight Branches Technique inherited from Ryūchi Cave 97 369.

  • Eight Branches Technique: Marks a giant white snake with a blood formation, transforming it into an eight-headed, dragon-featured serpent described as Manda’s ancestor 369.
  • Assimilation: Merges with the serpent to coordinate its attacks 370.
  • Regeneration: Severed heads regenerate, while absorbed natural energy restores its strength 370 372.
  • Countermeasures: Shen Ye permanently removes a head with the Totsuka Blade and eventually seals the creature with Planetary Devastation 370 373.
  • Control: The serpent resents Orochimaru and would attack him if freed 372.

Forbidden Ninjutsu and Reincarnation

Orochimaru claims to know every technique on the Forbidden Jutsu Scroll and seeks to master all ninjutsu 281 283.

  • Shadow clones: Uses a clone to observe and fight Shen Ye 145 146.
  • Shuriken Shadow Clone Technique: Multiplies a thrown shuriken for ranged pressure 146.
  • Impure World Reincarnation: Revives Hashirama and Tobirama Senju during the Mount Myoboku battle 373 374.
  • Incomplete mastery: States that the revived Hokage can use only half their usual strength. Tobirama consequently fails to release himself from the technique 374.
  • Life-force cost: Says that summoning the two Hokage would have shortened his original body’s remaining lifespan substantially 374.
  • Body reincarnation research: Intends to make Shen Ye his vessel, but describes the reincarnation technique as still under development 372.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Longsword: Draws it from a snake emerging from his mouth and uses it against Jiraiya 369.
  • Kunai and ninja pouch: His clone draws a kunai while caught in Shen Ye’s genjutsu 146.
  • Sharingan collection: Possesses multiple Sharingan in his research collection 186.
  • Research hideouts: Maintains numerous bases as research sites and escape contingencies 106.

Relationships

  • Sarutobi Hiruzen — Teacher and former Hokage. His affection for Orochimaru complicates his response to the experiments and defection 71 283.
  • Jiraiya — Former teammate and close friend turned opponent. Jiraiya repeatedly pursues him but still struggles to deliver a killing blow 97 106 293 369.
  • Tsunade — Former teammate. Orochimaru exploits her grief over Nawaki by suggesting his research could reunite her with her dead brother 98.
  • Shen Ye — Recruitment target, research subject, desired reincarnation vessel, and eventual major opponent 71 146 281 372.
  • Namikaze Minato — Saves him from Shen Ye during his later defection and permits his escape, hoping to prevent open hostility 282 284.
  • Anko — Her Cursed Seal provides a means of locating him; Jiraiya removes it using Sage Mode 129 130.
  • Manda — Summoned ally and Ryūchi Cave sage whom Orochimaru deceives with promises of immortality. Orochimaru later declares Manda’s life meaningless to him 359 369.
  • Sound ninja — Subordinates deployed to capture Shen Ye. Their loyalty varies: Wang and Mancheng defend Orochimaru, while Futong prioritizes himself 132 162.
  • Hashirama and Tobirama Senju — Revived through Impure World Reincarnation and used against Shen Ye 374.
