Background / History
Ranger of Golden Branch Village
Sores was one of Golden Branch Village’s few regular rangers. With elite units deployed to the troll front and other capable rangers concentrated in larger settlements, he served in a peripheral village despite his comparatively average ability. His army experience nevertheless made him considerably more seasoned than a fresh recruit 5 9.
When he and Ilana encountered Lanlos near the coast, Sores volunteered to complete the night patrol alone so that Ilana could escort the youth home. Lanlos teased him about his exaggerated “Murloc Slayer” reputation before they separated 5.
Disappearance at Golden Beach
Sores failed to report back for an entire day, prompting Ilana to search for him against Nicole’s orders. He had been injured while trying to drive murlocs away: a shaman concealed among them struck his chest with a Lightning Bolt. His army-issued leather armor prevented the attack from killing him 9 10.
Hidden behind a reef, Sores treated the burn with crushed herbs and linen bandages while observing the murlocs building a settlement. Before he could return to report, Ilana arrived in a conspicuous bush disguise. Recognizing the danger, he rushed from cover to protect her, but Lanlos intercepted the incoming lightning with a Fireball 10.
Sores escaped during the ensuing commotion and followed Lanlos’s trail markers to their camp. He was impressed—and embarrassed—when Lanlos detected his stealth. When Ilana embraced him and aggravated his wound, he concealed the injury to spare her further worry 11.
Destruction of Golden Branch Village
Returning toward the village, Sores, Ilana, and Lanlos saw the firelight of an Amani troll attack. During the fighting, Ilana shielded Sores’s back and was killed by a spear. Sores retaliated, decapitating one troll, but a Curse of Weakness made his scimitar too heavy to wield and pinned him to the ground 11 12.
Alisa prevented the trolls from immediately killing him, keeping him alive to manipulate Lanlos. Mortally wounded, Sores seized Lanlos’s collar and demanded an answer, hoping his companion would reject the demon’s claims and provide some final hope. Lanlos remained unresponsive; Sores died condemning his perceived cowardice and lack of honor 12.
Sores’s body then withered and burned to ash. His flesh and soul nourished the fel energy surging into Lanlos, who turned that power against the attackers 12 13.
Memorial and Lasting Influence
Only Sores’s personal effects remained for burial, making his memorial the last one completed. Lanlos carved his name and an epitaph honoring his refusal to submit 14.
Sores remained central to Lanlos’s resolve afterward. Remembering his voice and touching the inscription helped Lanlos reject the Burning Legion’s promises and insist that his own choices—not Sargeras’s claims—would determine his future 15.
Appearance
- Apparent age: Described as a middle-aged “uncle,” although the narration notes that elven ages are difficult to judge by appearance 5.
- Hair: Messy 11.
- Patrol injury: A severe, charred wound across his chest from a murloc shaman’s Lightning Bolt 10.
Personality
Sores was boastful, devil-may-care, and easily drawn into banter. He treated murlocs contemptuously and promoted his “Murloc Slayer” image, though Lanlos’s teasing could embarrass him. His shameless response to teasing about Ilana contrasted with her visible shyness 5 11.
Beneath that swagger, he cared deeply for his companions. He tried to protect Ilana from an incoming spell and later hid his injury to avoid worrying her. His final confrontation with Lanlos exposed how strongly he valued courage and resistance rather than passive surrender 10 11 12.
Abilities & Skills
Ranger Fieldcraft
- Camouflage and stealth: Concealed himself behind a reef while injured and later approached Lanlos’s camp unnoticed by Ilana. Lanlos nevertheless detected him 10 11.
- Environmental awareness: Immediately recognized that Ilana’s bush disguise was unsuitable for an open beach, recalling his earlier instruction that camouflage must fit its surroundings 10.
- Field treatment: Chewed medicinal herbs into a poultice and bandaged his own lightning burn 10.
Blade Combat
- Close-quarters fighting: Kicked an Amani troll off balance and decapitated it with his scimitar 12.
- Experience: Had served in the regular army and was considered a qualified ranger by both Lanlos and Nicole 9 10.
- Limits: Had not reached intermediate professional rank. His “Murloc Slayer” title overstated his strength; alone, he could handle only a few isolated murlocs rather than fight through a large group 5 9.
- Vulnerability to magic: Was caught off guard by a concealed shaman and later incapacitated by a Curse of Weakness 10 12.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Scimitar: Used against the Amani attackers. After his death, Lanlos wielded a curved blade called “Sores”; Alleria subsequently noted that the fallen ranger’s scimitar had suffered extraordinary melting damage 12 13 14.
- Standard-issue leather armor: Retained from his army service; protected him from a fatal chest injury during the shaman’s attack 10.
- Medicinal herbs and linen bandages: Used to treat his wound in the field 10.
Relationships
- Ilana — Fellow ranger and romantic partner. She searched for him despite orders, and he tried to protect her from the murlocs. She later died shielding his back during the village attack 5 9 10 11 12.
- Lanlos — Close companion and frequent partner in teasing. Their friendship ended in Sores’s condemnation of Lanlos’s apparent surrender, but his memory became an enduring reason for Lanlos to resist demonic temptation 5 11 12 15.
- Nicole — Village militia captain who respected his experience and considered him an excellent ranger when he went missing 9.
- Alisa — Enemy who restrained, wounded, and exploited him to torment Lanlos during the destruction of Golden Branch Village 12.
