Background / History

Duan Ming was an orphan on Earth who endured hardship throughout childhood. After finally obtaining a promising job, he was diagnosed with a terminal illness; he died during surgery as a young man, detached from family or friends. His soul separated from his body and was drawn into space by an irresistible force. 1

An emerald light collided with his soul and carried it within fragments of the Sargerite Keystone. He drifted through the Void for countless years, watching stars form and die until exhaustion and Fel exposure left his soul nearly fused with the fragments. 1 2

Vihana, an Eredar Soul Eater, discovered him and attempted to drain both his soul and the Keystone's power. In desperation, Duan Ming reached for the fragment, fused with it, and turned its Fel against her. He consumed Vihana's soul, acquiring her memories, demon-language knowledge, and soul-manipulation techniques. 2

In Mardum, the Shattered Abyss, Duan Ming learned that the Sargerite Keystone could reach Azeroth. Seeking to change Azeroth's tragic future, he fought Belash, a Doomguard commander, using Vihana's collection of bound souls. He destroyed and absorbed Belash, completing a demonic transformation. 3 4

When Tyranna and an army of Burning Legion demons moved to seize the Keystone, Duan Ming used the artifact to open a portal toward Azeroth. The escape expended his previously overwhelming power, leaving him unable to wield mana as freely after his arrival. 4 7

Appearance

Duan Ming's appearance changes drastically across his life, from a sickly human to a winged demon and later the High Elf identity known as Lanlos. 1 4 37

Personality

Duan Ming begins as isolated, bitter, and resigned to death. His childhood as an orphan and the loss of his future to terminal illness leave him with little attachment to his original world; Azeroth's repeated resistance against disaster becomes the source of hope that inspires him to act. 1 3

Fel power brings out a cruel, exhilarated side. While consuming Vihana and later fighting Legion demons, he takes disturbing satisfaction in his enemies' pain and develops an inflated sense of being chosen to alter Azeroth's fate. 2 3 4

As Lanlos, he is more restrained and analytical. He fears the consequences of relying on Fel, pursues arcane study with genuine enthusiasm, and repeatedly chooses difficult or dangerous action to protect others. After demons and trolls destroy the village and kill Fergus, Ilana, and Sores, he accepts Keystone power for revenge. Sent to the Western Temple to investigate damaged Conversion Crystals and the missing Conduit Crystal, Lanlos battles Arcane Aberrations, absorbs mana from Arcane Shards, and becomes entangled with Vereesa.
