Background / History
Geralt is a witcher trained at Kaer Morhen, the fortress of the School of the Wolf. Witchers were created as monster hunters, but centuries of prejudice, propaganda, and massacres reduced their orders to scattered survivors who take dangerous contracts for modest pay. 49 56
Despite styling himself Geralt of Rivia, he had never visited Rivia when he first adopted the name. Vesemir considered Geralt’s original choice of name overly pompous and made him draw lots for a regional prefix. 66
Geralt lives as an itinerant contractor, traveling between towns to hunt monsters and lift curses. He is familiar with the economic reality of the trade: oils, potions, weapon maintenance, and horseflesh can make even successful hunts barely profitable. 41 46
Appearance
Geralt is a tall, white-haired witcher with catlike yellow eyes, a weathered face, and a hoarse voice. His upper body bears numerous old scars. 35 71 522 542
- White hair and feline eyes that immediately mark him as a witcher. 65 564
- Carries steel and silver swords, traditionally using silver against monsters and evil spirits and steel for human threats. 564
- Frequently wears leather armor, gloves, riding trousers, and boots while traveling. 45 136
- His altered eyes grant effective vision in darkness. 50 569
- Can pass as an eastern baron through He Shenyan’s illusion magic, concealing both his hair and witcher eyes. 158
Personality
Geralt presents himself as restrained, pragmatic, and emotionally detached, an attitude sharpened by a profession in which people routinely treat witchers as mutated freaks. He is accustomed to hostility and sometimes uses an intimidating reputation to ensure clients pay, but he does not take money from people who genuinely cannot afford it. 525 541 567
His detachment is not indifference. Geralt repeatedly involves himself in problems without payment: he investigates Vilya’s disappearance after seeing Mallory’s distress, worries over an abused woman feeding Botchlings in the sewers, and is disturbed by the death of an eight-year-old boy. 68 525 541
Around trusted companions, he is considerably more expressive. He banters with He Shenyan, talks constantly while traveling, laughs openly with friends, and takes conspicuous pride in gifts such as his Dragonhide Armor. 60 524 1036
Views on Witchers and Fate
Geralt believes that close contact with others often brings them misfortune, leading him to see himself as a “walking disaster.” He nevertheless accepts responsibility for apprentices and people in danger when circumstances demand it. 79 1036
He dislikes grand heroic titles and unwanted public attention, even while privately admitting that the admiration feels good. 65 136
Abilities & Skills
Witcher Physiology
Geralt’s mutations grant him senses and physical capabilities beyond those of ordinary humans.
- Possesses heightened hearing, smell, vision, and danger awareness; he can identify subtle tracks and scents others miss. 35 50 71
- Sees effectively in darkness and uses his night vision to assess enemies during combat. 50 569
- Can enter meditation while remaining alert to his surroundings, allowing him to rest efficiently while traveling. 41
- Uses potions to further heighten his senses, though their toxins damage his body over time. 71 75
- Retains enough endurance to travel and fight in harsh cold, though he still feels the discomfort. 525
Swordsmanship
Geralt is an exceptionally skilled swordsman whose fighting style is economical and direct.
- Dispatches Drowners with minimal effort when they obstruct his route. 41
- Defeats five armed professional fighters alone through speed, skill, and Signs. 534
- Kills twelve Iron Sword Company attackers during a Novigrad ambush. 569 571
- Uses a relaxed, seemingly amateur stance that conceals his readiness to strike. 534
- Can fight monsters, undead, criminals, and cursed entities without relying on a fixed battlefield or support. 71 73 534
Witcher Signs
Geralt casts several combat Signs through practiced gestures.
- Quen — Creates a protective shield that can deflect arrows and resist flying glass. 71 569
- Yrden — Slows hostile objects and enemies within its affected area. 71
- Aard — Releases telekinetic force to scatter enemies or blast away rubble. 71 76
- Axii — Influences a target’s thinking and behavior; Geralt uses it to make a servant cooperate. 534
Monster Lore and Investigation
Geralt combines practical monster knowledge with patient observation.
- Identifies creatures, curses, and supernatural threats from physical evidence, tracks, smells, and behavior. 35 50 69
- Investigates crime scenes even when conventional clues are absent, including a vampire-related murder involving a severed arm and unexplained blood loss. 45 46
- Knows common dangers and survival practices concerning Drowners, Nekkers, and forest monsters. 569
- Recognizes military habits, cult practices, and signs of corruption outside of strictly monster-related work. 542 548
Magical Sword
A mage-forged sword later allows Geralt to wield magical flames and runes by will alone.
- The weapon is extraordinarily sharp and cannot be stored in an ordinary scabbard. 153
- Its flames can be ignited or extinguished at Geralt’s command. 153
- Lit runes and flames make the blade effective against both humans and monsters. 153
- A mage also temporarily enhances his sword with anti-magic properties and magical flame during his battle with Will Gimo. 148
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Steel sword — Used for human opponents and general self-defense. 564
- Silver sword — Used against monsters and evil spirits. 41 564
- Hand crossbow — Part of his usual equipment, though lost during the Bordeaux Manor ordeal. 76
- Witcher medallion — Reacts strongly to magical substances and cursed phenomena. 62 75
- Dragonhide Armor — Enchanted red-and-black pterosaur-leather armor made by He Shenyan; dramatically enhanced Geralt’s performance against undead and helped him survive Bordeaux Manor. It was later destroyed in the battle against Will Gimo. 60 73 75 153
- Roach — The recurring name Geralt gives his horses; he explicitly names a purchased chestnut mare “Roach.” 64
Relationships
- Vesemir — Geralt’s mentor and an elder of Kaer Morhen. Their relationship includes mutual irritation, trust, and shared responsibility for training new witchers. 56 135
- He Shenyan — Mage, traveling companion, employer, and close friend. Geralt initially distrusts him, but their relationship develops into frequent banter, cooperation, and genuine concern for one another. 36 62 523 541
- Anderson — Witcher apprentice brought to Kaer Morhen by Geralt as an infant; Geralt later helps train him and values his discipline. 79 135
- Ciri / Cirilla — Geralt’s apprentice. He acts as a stern but protective parental figure and takes pride in her potential. 137 522
- Yennefer of Vengerberg — Geralt’s lover and later former partner. Their relationship ends after Yennefer’s infidelity and her breakup with both Geralt and another sorcerer. 201 281 524
- Emiel Regis — Vampire, barber, herbalist, and traveling companion. Geralt initially suspects him because of his herbal scent, then accepts him after learning his true identity. 535 536
- Vilya — A woman Geralt encounters in Rivia and later remembers as the brave mother of Anderson; she becomes a renowned scholar. 66 135
- Tavia — An old acquaintance Geralt once helped, later reunited with him in Novigrad after she becomes a music student and singer. 566 567
- Cessna — Dryad of Brokilon. Their interaction begins with hostility over Geralt’s past actions but later becomes intimate. 557 559

Novigrad and Bordeaux Manor
Traveling with He Shenyan, Geralt reaches Novigrad, handles Drowners along the route, and investigates a vampire-related murder. Kaer Morhen and the Trial of the Grasses

Rivia and Anderson
Following a prophecy, Geralt remains in Rivia, becomes involved in Vilya’s disappearance, and ultimately commits to taking in apprentices. He brings Anderson to Kaer Morhen, where the child survives an improved Trial of the Grasses and grows into a capable witcher trainee. 66 68 79 135

Trivia
- Geralt’s title “Geralt of Rivia” was assigned by lot rather than earned through any genuine connection to Rivia. 66
- He names every horse Roach, a habit He Shenyan openly questions. 64
- Despite his profession, Geralt is a notably poor cook; his roasted potatoes prompt He Shenyan to sarcastically encourage him to keep practicing. 157
- He is embarrassed by the “White-Haired Knight-Errant” title, yet privately concedes that it sounds pleasant. 65
- Geralt’s white hair, two swords, and cat eyes make him immediately recognizable in Novigrad, where children announce his arrival through the streets. 564
