History

Before the Imperium

The Emperor has lived for nearly the full span of human civilization. Before adopting his imperial identity, he was driven by exploration and curiosity, though his memories also contain the costs of innumerable sacrifices. 1040

During the ancient 2K era, he hoped humanity would end its own infighting and unite peacefully. When that hope failed, he concluded that a singular leader was necessary and became the Emperor of Mankind. 713 After Terra was unified, he launched the Great Crusade. 1031

He later described the Emperor as an identity he had to “play”: a cold and impartial ruler willing to treat people as tools in order to protect humanity from threats across the galaxy. 908 1026

The Golden Throne

A rebellion left the Emperor catastrophically wounded, unable to move and forced to endure prolonged torment upon the Golden Throne. His condition became inseparable from the Imperium’s stagnation, technological decline, and fragmentation. 297 469

His ascension and humanity’s faith in him made his existence vulnerable to distortion. Tzeentch claimed that mortal belief could shatter his identity and reshape him into countless conflicting images, turning the Emperor into a god against his will. 467

During the crisis surrounding Tzeentch, the Emperor ordered the Custodians to flee the Throne Room, armed himself, and entered the Warp to confront the Chaos God directly. 464 467 He was mortally wounded, while He Shenyan used the Astral Beacon to blur humanity’s collective memory of the Emperor and protect him from Tzeentch’s influence. 468

Reconstruction and Reform

The Emperor survived and descended from the Throne, allowing the Imperium to begin rebuilding with a future beyond its dying status quo. 470 701 He spent time farming beneath the Throne and accepted technological knowledge from He Shenyan intended to bring the Empire back from collapse. 511

He also worked to prevent faith from creating another dangerous god. Rather than destroy Divinity outright and harm believers, he supported a plan to gradually replace the “God-Emperor” image with science, progress, and truth while retaining the protective benefits of faith. 720

Reconciliation with His Sons

The Emperor increasingly sought to repair his relationships with the Primarchs. He openly accepted responsibility for failing them, admitting that he could not simultaneously rule the Imperium and be the father they needed. 675 1026

He recovered Horus’s shattered soul and asked He Shenyan to restore it, accepting the uncertainty of Horus’s childlike revival as a chance to make amends. 675 He later revealed to the Primarchs that the Chaos Gods had manipulated many of the conditions behind their betrayals, while still acknowledging his own role in their suffering. 1023 1026

White Tower and the Divine War

After gaining the ability to cross worlds, the Emperor became a mage affiliated with the White Tower Council. 1040 1042 He joined the Divine War, slaughtering Angels for their soul cores while remaining focused on preventing the conflict’s aftershocks from endangering his world. 1047

The Emperor does not possess a single fixed public form. He frequently appears as an ordinary, weary man or a farmer, but adopts imposing imperial and martial guises when necessary. 292 511 701

The Emperor rejects worship despite being the object of humanity’s faith. He considers religion useless to humanity and wishes for a future in which people can discard him, forget him, and progress without dependence on a divine ruler. 292

He is divided between ruthless reason and genuine human feeling. He believes his earlier attempts to act as a purely rational ruler damaged his family, yet his compassion and attachment also repeatedly conflicted with his political decisions. 307 908

In later events, he becomes markedly more open about guilt and regret. He acknowledges that he was a poor father, apologizes to his sons, and insists he never intended to abandon any of them. 675 1023 1026
