Background / History

Research and pursuit of immortality

Orochimaru is a disciple of Hiruzen Sarutobi and one of the Konoha Sannin. According to Yatsuhashi, witnessing the deaths of friends and family drove him toward a fanatical pursuit of immortality, increasingly diverting him from his original research intentions 1 44.

For several years, he employed Uchiha Yatsuhashi as an experimental assistant. Yatsuhashi helped improve cell-culture formulas and resolve theoretical problems; in return, Orochimaru secured his special genin status and protected him from premature battlefield deployment 1 2 44.

Hokage candidacy and departure

Orochimaru competed for the position of Fourth Hokage with Danzo’s recommendation. Yatsuhashi attempted to obtain Uchiha support for him, but Fugaku refused to meet either of them. The clan instead voted for Fugaku despite his absence from the candidate list, and Minato Namikaze won the confidence vote 1 5.

On the night of his departure, Orochimaru injected Yatsuhashi with diluted Hashirama Cells in an attempt to awaken his Sharingan. The cells caused severe rejection and tree-like growths. The investigation into missing children initially pointed toward Orochimaru. Yatsuhashi later exposed Danzo’s continued transplantation experiments and his plan to silence witnesses and blame Orochimaru for the evidence. Minato explicitly recognized that Danzo had intended to frame the missing-nin 16 19 21.

Secret return to Konoha

During Minato’s operation against Root, Orochimaru slipped into Konoha and visited Yatsuhashi’s rented room. He incapacitated Anko through her cursed seal, upgraded it, and offered Yatsuhashi a Heaven Curse Seal, which Yatsuhashi refused 23 24.

Orochimaru proposed a separate exchange: intelligence about the Uchiha clan, particularly Shisui, for a scroll capable of releasing Anko’s sealed memories.
