Power Progression

Stage / Realm / Level Chapter Notes
Sixth-Stage Aperture-Opening Realm 122 Introduced as Qinghe Prefecture's strongest martial artist. Demonstrated the ability to condense True Qi into a tangible hand outside his body. His later-described foundation included high-grade True Qi, Body Apertures holding six thousand strands each, and opened Life and Soul Apertures. 122 197 256
Seventh-Stage True Astral Realm — Early Stage 254 Broke through roughly a week after Mu Yang left Qinghe Prefecture, then requested a transfer to Anling Prefecture. His breakthrough qualified him for an Evil-Suppressing Deputy General appointment. His exceptional sixth-rank foundation made him stronger than an ordinary newly advanced True Astral Realm martial artist. 254 256

Background / History

Yuan Yin served as the Slayer Commander of the Qinghe Prefecture Demon Slayer Bureau and was regarded as the strongest martial artist in the prefecture. Despite his high office, he personally reviewed local threats and took a hard line against collusion with demons, declaring that such offenders must die. 122

Following the Water Transport Gang and Pingwei Escort Agency incidents, Elder Liang reported Mu Yang's actions to Yuan Yin. Yuan Yin recognized Mu Yang as an exceptionally talented youth, approved Elder Liang's handling of the escort routes, and permitted Yuan Yuan to lead the operation against the Water Transport Gang. 122

He later took an active interest in Mu Yang's development. He invited Mu Yang to the Yuan Mansion after the Blessed Land Grand Selection, discussed a dangerous mission involving a sixth-rank demonic beast, and arranged precautions for the Cold Pool Blessed Land after Nie Chi warned him of possible Six Fan Gate retaliation. 184 186 187

Yuan Yin is a disciple of Liang Province Pacification Commissioner Xu Xinghe. Among Xu Xinghe's disciples, his aptitude ranked within the top three, and his speed in opening the Life Aperture was second only to that of his exceptionally gifted eldest senior brother. He offered to provide Mu Yang with a letter through which he could seek assistance from Yuan Yin's master or martial brothers in Anling Prefecture. 195 254 255

After breaking through to the True Astral Realm, Yuan Yin transferred from Qinghe Prefecture to Anling Prefecture as an Evil-Suppressing Deputy General. Before departing, he directly appointed Mu Yang as a Territory-Seeking Envoy under the Liang Province Pacification Commissioner. 254

In Anling Prefecture, Yuan Yin took responsibility for monitoring Windcloud Sect as part of Gu Changkong's plan to draw out its Six Fan Gate supporters. After Mu Yang eliminated its leaders and their principal allies, Yuan Yin and the accompanying Bureau martial artists dealt with the remaining sect members and destroyed the sect. 259 275 279

He subsequently acted on Nie Chi's warning about Sheng Wu's planned attack on Hanging Sea Camp. Following the confrontation, Yuan Yin helped negotiate the New Moon Hidden Sect's future, assigning Nie Chi to gather its remnants and bring the organization under Demon Slayer Bureau control while sparing disciples unconnected to Sheng Wu's faction. 296 299 300

Appearance

Yuan Yin is a tall, lean, fair-skinned middle-aged man with a neatly groomed goat-horn beard. His scholarly manner and grey-blue robes contrast with the rugged appearance commonly associated with martial artists. 122

  • Usually wears grey-blue robes. 122 171 253
  • Maintains a refined, composed bearing even when handling urgent threats. 122 187
  • Often works late over maps and written reports in his study. 122 171 253

Personality

Yuan Yin is calm, deliberate, and politically cautious. He does not rush to judgment, whether managing the aftermath of local conflicts or responding to a late-night visit from Nie Chi, a Six Fan Gate constable with an assassination background. 122 187

He is also a supportive mentor. He recognizes talent without jealousy, openly acknowledges Mu Yang's potential, gives cultivation guidance, and uses his authority to secure Mu Yang a role suited to his combat-driven nature. 195 254 255

Although usually gentle and easygoing around Yuan Yuan, Yuan Yin can become serious when discussing cultivation risks, particularly the difficulty of opening the Life Aperture and the danger of choosing an overly vague natal martial skill. 122 255

His concern for subordinates can outweigh immediate competitive advantage. During the Blessed Land Grand Selection, he saved Han Kuang from a potentially crippling attack, then allowed Liang Qing to enforce the resulting disqualification. When sparring with Mu Yang, he initially intended to demonstrate the gap between realms without subjecting him to a prolonged, demoralizing defeat, and ended the match once continuing risked injury. 180 257 258

Yuan Yin's political restraint does not imply sympathy toward the Six Fan Gate. He privately questioned the emperor's reasons for establishing it, acknowledged its covert imperial support, and indirectly suggested that unnoticed deaths of its members could be covered up despite both agencies officially serving the court. He later angrily blamed the Six Fan Gate for circumstances that prevented him from warning Hanging Sea Camp through his token. 122 186 296

He combines pragmatism with a sense of obligation. Although Mu Yang's proposal briefly tempted him to disregard his agreement to spare the New Moon Hidden Sect's ordinary disciples, Yuan Yin recognized that Nie Chi's help could not simply be dismissed and proposed political control of the sect instead. 299 300

Abilities & Skills

True Astral Realm Cultivation

Yuan Yin has reached the seventh-stage True Astral Realm, where True Qi transforms into denser, more tangible True Astral energy. 254 256

  • Condenses True Astral energy into a dense, resilient physical form. 256
  • Possesses strength far beyond ordinary newly advanced True Astral Realm martial artists due to his prior foundation. 256
  • Had cultivated high-grade True Qi before his breakthrough. 256
  • Demonstrated a bright-white ball of True Astral Force that felt smooth, cool, and resilient when touched. 256
  • Understands the realm's progression through True Astral conversion, tempering the five viscera, tempering the six bowels, and eventual comprehension of martial will. He explains these stages to Mu Yang rather than claiming to have completed them himself. 256

Heaven-Seizing Hand

Yuan Yin's innate martial skill is the Heaven-Seizing Hand, manifested as a massive jade-like hand formed from his power. It also appeared as a huge cloud-mist hand before his True Astral Realm breakthrough. 180 257 258

  • Can generate a palm several zhang long to strike at range. 258
  • Caught Yu Sheng's Void-Speed Glazed Beads in midair, preventing them from crippling Han Kuang, then returned the treasure to its owner. 180
  • Used his innate martial skill to send the sixth-rank Huo Xing flying when he interfered in Mu Yang's match against Yu Sheng. 183
  • Used against Mu Yang during their spar after Mu Yang forced him to take the fight seriously. 257
  • The technique was cracked by Mu Yang's counterattack while Yuan Yin was using roughly seventy percent of his strength. 258

Aperture-Opening Knowledge

Before entering the True Astral Realm, Yuan Yin opened the Life and Soul Apertures and developed an exceptional sixth-rank foundation. 256

  • Each of his Body Apertures held six thousand strands of True Qi. 256
  • His aperture capacity resulted from combining a strong physical foundation with high-grade True Qi. 197
  • Took three years to open his Life Aperture and more than another month to imprint his natal martial skill. 255
  • Offers practical methods that reduce True Qi expenditure and improve efficiency when opening apertures. 254
  • His aperture-opening techniques could save approximately five to ten percent of the True Qi normally consumed. 254
  • Warns against natal martial skills with vague or ethereal conceptions because of the difficulties they create for cultivation. 255

True Qi Manifestation

As an Aperture-Opening Realm martial artist, Yuan Yin could condense True Qi outside his body into tangible forms. 122

  • Formed a large True Qi hand to gently lift Elder Liang. 122
  • Used True Qi to catch Yuan Yuan after her defeat by Mu Yang, dispersing the remaining impact. 184
  • Quietly collected spilled tea with True Qi and turned it into mist. 122

Equipment & Mount

  • Official token — Carries the dark-gold token identifying an Evil-Suppressing Deputy General; presented it when entering Anling Prefecture's Demon Slayer Bureau city. 254 260
  • Cloud-Scaled Horse — Rides a cloud-white mare at the early sixth rank. Its scaled hooves generate clouds and mist, and its cultivation is substantially higher than that of Mu Yang's mount, Little Black. 258

Relationships

  • Yuan Yuan — His daughter. He is affectionate and protective toward her, but still permits her to lead dangerous Bureau operations and respects her cultivation ambitions. Before his transfer, he restricted her Bureau missions to Qinghe Prefecture. She accompanies him and Mu Yang to Anling Prefecture. 122 184 253 256 260
  • Mu Yang — Former subordinate and protégé. Yuan Yin recognizes Mu Yang's extraordinary potential, offers cultivation instruction, spars with him, and directly appoints him Territory-Seeking Envoy. He advocates for Mu Yang's special appointment to Xu Xinghe and increasingly treats him as an extraordinary combatant rather than merely a promising junior after the Windcloud Sect operation. 195 254 256 279
  • Liang Qing — Trusted Bureau captain and successor as Qinghe Prefecture Slayer Commander. Yuan Yin provides him guidance and entrusts him with sensitive missions. 187 254 256
  • Elder Liang — Senior Bureau member whose judgment Yuan Yin respects in handling Qinghe Prefecture's affairs. 122
  • Nie Chi — Initially a wary but civil contact from the Six Fan Gate. Yuan Yin remained prepared to use the Heaven-Seizing Hand during their late-night meeting despite recognizing that Nie Chi had not come to fight. After Nie Chi left the Six Fan Gate, Yuan Yin received his warning about Sheng Wu and agreed to spare the New Moon Hidden Sect's uninvolved disciples. Their relationship developed into cooperation when Yuan Yin assigned him to reorganize the sect under Bureau authority. 187 296 299 300
  • Lei Xing — An acquaintance whose worries over Fu Yu's disappearance Yuan Yin attempts to ease. He arranged for her to secretly follow and protect the Cold Pool Blessed Land expedition after she offered her assistance. 184 192
  • Gu Changkong — Yuan Yin's senior brother, who criticizes his comparatively weak body-tempering foundation. Yuan Yin participates in his plans to draw out Windcloud Sect's Six Fan Gate backers and to reinforce Hanging Sea Camp. 260 259 299
  • Xu Xinghe — His master and the Liang Province Pacification Commissioner. Yuan Yin applies to him for his transfer and persuades him to guarantee Mu Yang's exceptional direct-subordinate Territory-Seeking Envoy appointment. 254 255
  • Han Kuang — A Bureau subordinate whom Yuan Yin saves from Yu Sheng's potentially crippling magical-treasure attack during the Blessed Land Grand Selection. Han Kuang thanks him despite being disqualified as a consequence of the rescue. 180
  • Huo Xing — A hostile Six Fan Gate officer. Yuan Yin strikes him away from Mu Yang during the selection, then takes precautions against his anticipated retaliation. 183 187
  • Tang Hao and Han Bo — Territory-Seeking Envoys involved in monitoring Windcloud Sect. They report on its Six Fan Gate visitors and participate in the subsequent operation with Yuan Yin and Mu Yang. 273 275 279
  • Gu Tingquan — A Bureau colleague who joins Yuan Yin in opposing an unsupported attack on Vajra Temple and participates in the discussions concerning the New Moon Hidden Sect. 299 300
  • Chu Zheng — The general threatened by Sheng Wu's planned attack. Yuan Yin travels to assist after receiving Nie Chi's warning and later explains the circumstances behind the reinforcement. 296 299

Story Role / Major Arcs

Qinghe Prefecture Leadership

Yuan Yin oversees the Qinghe Prefecture Demon Slayer Bureau, manages the consequences of the Water Transport Gang and Pingwei Escort Agency cases, and authorizes operations against demon-linked forces. 122

Blessed Land Grand Selection

He watches Yuan Yuan's final match against Mu Yang without bias, approving of Mu Yang's victory rather than resenting his daughter's loss. He later invites Mu Yang to the Yuan Mansion for dinner and private discussion. 184 185

Earlier in the selection, Yuan Yin intervenes when Yu Sheng's Void-Speed Glazed Beads threaten to destroy Han Kuang's dantian. He catches the beads, returns them, and leaves the official ruling to Liang Qing, who disqualifies Han Kuang because of outside interference. Yuan Yin later protects Mu Yang by striking Huo Xing away when the latter intervenes in Yu Sheng's defeat. 180 183

Six Fan Gate Tensions

After Nie Chi warns him that Huo Xing may retaliate, Yuan Yin responds by assigning Liang Qing to lead the Cold Pool Blessed Land mission, anticipating possible interference by the Six Fan Gate. 187

His private discussion with Mu Yang also reveals the Six Fan Gate's substantial half-demon presence. He identifies Huo Xing, Yu Sheng, and Wei Duoduo as half-demons, distinguishes Nie Chi as a pure-blooded human, and admits that he does not know why the emperor is secretly supporting the rival agency's expansion. 185 186

As an additional precaution for the Cold Pool expedition, he has Lei Xing follow the party secretly, enabling her to assist when sixth-rank enemies appear. 192

Mentor to Mu Yang

Yuan Yin repeatedly guides Mu Yang on cultivation, including the Body, Spirit, Life, and Soul Apertures, the True Astral Realm, and the selection of a natal martial skill. 254 255 256

He offers Mu Yang the Water-Splitting Sect mission in neighboring Anshun Prefecture because of his demonstrated underwater combat ability. The target is a sixth-rank monster that three sixth-rank Water-Splitting Sect martial artists have failed to defeat. Yuan Yin promises substantial merits but warns Mu Yang not to sacrifice his future for a single battle. 186

When Mu Yang returns, Yuan Yin recognizes his achievements against the Mirage Serpent, Azure Snail Demon, Ghost Lamp Temple, Medicine King Valley, and the Wind-Flow Golden Eagle. He calculates eleven Earth Grade Superior Merits in rewards and advises Mu Yang that the Bureau Armory can purchase his surplus materials at fair prices. 253

Spar with Mu Yang

Seeking to help Mu Yang assess his strength against a seventh-stage martial artist, Yuan Yin spars with him at the Blessed Land Grand Selection valley. Mu Yang shatters Yuan Yin's martial skill and cracks the Heaven-Seizing Hand, causing Yuan Yin to halt the match before either side is injured. 257 258

Yuan Yin initially expects to demonstrate the gap between the sixth and seventh ranks, but Mu Yang's attacks force him to retreat and become serious. After ending the spar, he calls Mu Yang a monster and is further astonished to learn that Mu Yang has completed his Spirit Apertures but has not yet opened the Life and Soul Apertures. 257 258

Transfer to Anling Prefecture

After advancing to the True Astral Realm, Yuan Yin transfers to Anling Prefecture as an Evil-Suppressing Deputy General. He leaves Liang Qing in charge of Qinghe Prefecture and gives Mu Yang a Black Jade Token for a direct Territory-Seeking Envoy appointment. 254

The appointment places Mu Yang directly under Xu Xinghe rather than under prefectural Bureau officials. Yuan Yin secures Xu Xinghe's personal guarantee so that Mu Yang can bypass the usual service and sponsorship requirements, while postponing activation of the token until their arrival in Anling Prefecture. 254

Yuan Yin departs alongside Yuan Yuan and Mu Yang, with Prefect Lu and local officials among those seeing the party off. Upon reaching Anling Prefecture, he introduces them to the bustling commercial district within the prefectural Bureau city and explains its inspections, purchasing practices, and Armory exchanges. 258 260

Windcloud Sect Operation

During the journey to Anling Prefecture, Yuan Yin explains that Windcloud Sect has submitted to the Six Fan Gate. Gu Changkong's plan is to monitor the sect rather than immediately destroy it, using the earlier Blessed Land Grand Selection incident as justification while waiting for more valuable Six Fan Gate targets to appear. Yuan Yin takes primary responsibility for surveillance and allows Mu Yang to pursue a separate sixth-rank monster mission in the meantime. 259

After receiving reports of a seventh-rank half-demon among the visitors, Yuan Yin discusses the situation with Mu Yang and the watching Territory-Seeking Envoys. Unlike Tang Hao, who doubts Mu Yang's confidence, Yuan Yin considers a direct assault possible. 273 275

Mu Yang's killing of Li Cang and the sect leaders exceeds Yuan Yin's expectations. While Mu Yang pursues Zhao Linjing and Hu Hui, Yuan Yin accepts responsibility for the Windcloud Sect remnants. He and the other Bureau martial artists subsequently destroy the leaderless sect. 279

Anling Prefecture Confrontations

Yuan Yin and Mu Yang return toward Anling Prefecture as Vajra Temple's abbot Xuyuan and his monks confront the Black Armored Guards outside the Bureau city gates. In the aftermath, Gu Changkong warns that although Xiao Yu cannot openly attack lower-ranked Bureau members without provoking Xu Xinghe, Xuyuan may act or hire assassins. Yuan Yin immediately recognizes the New Moon Hidden Sect as a possible source of such hired killers. 283 285

Hanging Sea Camp Reinforcement

Nie Chi later seeks out Yuan Yin and warns that Sheng Wu, the New Moon Hidden Sect's master, intends to attack Hanging Sea Camp. Yuan Yin accepts the warning, and Gu Changkong dispatches him with the reinforcement party. While riding toward the camp, Yuan Yin worries that Sheng Wu's late seventh-rank cultivation and assassination expertise could endanger even Mu Yang. 296 299

After the confrontation, Yuan Yin explains the warning and Gu Changkong's intentions to the group. He also raises the possibility that Xiao Yu is involved in the Six Fan Gate's support of the attack. 299

Bringing the New Moon Hidden Sect Under Control

When Mu Yang proposes attacking Vajra Temple, Yuan Yin and Gu Tingquan oppose acting without conclusive evidence, given the temple's wider Buddhist protection and the opportunity such an attack would give the Six Fan Gate. Discussion then turns to the New Moon Hidden Sect. 299

Nie Chi reminds Yuan Yin of their agreement to punish Sheng Wu and his associates while sparing the remaining disciples. Yuan Yin responds by asking whether Nie Chi, as a disciple of the former sect master and with Bureau backing, can take control of the sect instead. 299

Yuan Yin subsequently tasks Nie Chi with gathering the sect's remnants and bringing them under Demon Slayer Bureau authority. Nie Chi agrees and undertakes to purge Sheng Wu's loyalists first. The group returns to the prefectural Bureau, where Gu Changkong approves the arrangement. 300
