Background / History

The Demon Slayer Bureau was established by the founding emperor of the Great Jing Dynasty and has operated for nearly a thousand years, with influence extending throughout the dynasty. 152

The Demon Slayer Bureau is described as the Great Jing Dynasty's most powerful department and the imperial court's “sharpest blade.” Its members kill demons and eliminate evil externally, while internally they intimidate nobles and powerful figures. The bureau may execute first and report afterward, giving it exceptional enforcement authority. 6

County Lieutenant Zhou Heng views the bureau as a force capable of challenging Qingxi County's entrenched Wang, Hu, and Liu families. He sends a recommendation to its Qinghe Prefecture branch after recognizing Mu Yang's talent. 6 16

By the time of Mu Yang's recruitment, the Qinghe Prefecture branch is headquartered roughly ten miles outside Qinghe Prefecture City in a black iron-stone complex resembling a military camp. Its buildings bear permanent dark-brown bloodstains and a heavy scent of Sha Qi. 52

The Qinghe Prefecture branch manages a Blessed Land whose limited places are reserved for martial artists under twenty-five. Branches from neighboring prefectures and other local factions compete for these places through the Blessed Land Grand Selection. 73 173

The bureau later faces growing friction with the Six Fan Gate, an imperial constabulary organization whose demon-slaying function overlaps with the bureau's responsibilities. 169 170 The current emperor's support for the newer organization and apparent willingness to disregard established conventions have raised fears that the court intends to curb, balance, or replace the bureau's longstanding influence. 152 170

Despite its reputation, the bureau is not free of internal corruption. Demon-Seeking Captains in Sancha County colluded with demons, while Anshun Prefecture Slayer Commander Ge Feiwu was implicated in demon-related wrongdoing before his death during the Ghost Lamp Temple investigation. 144 149 219 231

Territory-Seeking Envoys

Territory-Seeking Envoys are specialized roaming investigators distinct from Slayer Commanders and Evil-Suppressing Generals. They answer to a provincial Pacification Commissioner, travel throughout their province, exterminate demons, and investigate major factions. Their work offers access to more and better-paying missions, but carries a substantially higher mortality risk than the comparatively stable posts held by Slayer Commanders. 222

Ordinarily, applicants must have served in the bureau for over five years, obtain guarantees from at least three Slayer Commanders or higher-ranking officers, and independently kill at least three sixth-rank demons or equivalent beings. 254

A specially appointed Territory-Seeking Envoy may receive a Black Jade Token and report directly to the Pacification Commissioner, beyond the command authority of even an Evil-Suppressing General. Such envoys are assigned exceptionally dangerous cases involving powerful demons, major factions, unexplored Blessed Lands, and provincial borderlands. 254

Other Units

• Black Armored Guard — The city-defense force of the Anling Prefecture bureau's Guard Hall. Every guard is a fourth-stage Condensing Qi Realm martial artist at Perfection and wears inscription-engraved pseudo-artifact armor, making the unit highly dangerous in formation. 259
• Prefectural branches — Larger branches, such as the Anling Prefecture bureau, function as self-contained cities housing active personnel, their families, descendants of fallen members, merchants, and specialized internal divisions. 259 260

Recruitment and Advancement

The bureau recruits based on strength rather than age; anyone from sixteen to sixty may join if strong enough. 52 Recruitment assessments are held every ten days. 62

The Demon Slayer Bureau dispatches teams to investigate civilian reports of demonic activity, such as the suspected spider demon case at Wu Family Village. 64

Not all missions originate from public informants. Some are formed from demon traces discovered and reported by Demon-Seeking Captains who lack the time, combat ability, or tracking methods to resolve them personally. 102

Operations may involve cooperation with local constabularies, including blockades and coordinated raids against groups suspected of colluding with demons. 126

The bureau's authority carries substantial weight among local officials and constables; in Sancha County, corrupt constables immediately surrender after recognizing Mu Yang's bureau uniform. 142

The bureau manages the Qinghe Prefecture Blessed Land and organizes its Grand Selection, dividing entrants into fourth-tier and fifth-tier groups and appointing a First-Class Demon-Seeking Captain as an impartial judge. 73 173

Mysterious-grade missions may be selected through the Internal Affairs Hall, but Earth-grade missions involving fifth-rank demons are generally assigned directly because First-Class Demon-Seeking Captains are scarce. Immediate threats from lower-rank demons may likewise be prioritized or directly assigned by a Deputy Hall Master. 131 132

First-Class Demon-Seeking Captains may undertake external assignments, whereas lower-ranked captains ordinarily lack that qualification. 144

The bureau investigates internal and external collusion with demons, including corrupt officials, powerful clans, martial arts factions, and its own members. Its Anshun and Anling Prefecture personnel jointly investigated the disappearances of Shunyuan River personnel, the missing Slayer Commanders Fu Yu and Ge Feiwu, Ghost Lamp Temple, and Medicine King Valley. 149 211 219 222 239

Although the bureau historically handled matters such as investigating officials, suppressing martial arts factions, and regulating military armament trade, many of these functions have been curtailed or taken by the Six Fan Gate. 239 244
