Chen An grew up alongside Shen Qinglan because their fathers were close friends. His father, Chen Yan, saved Shen Zongyue after the latter was gravely injured while hunting demonic beasts. When Chen Yan later disappeared while gathering herbs, Shen Zongyue searched for him for a month and offered to raise Chen An within the Shen family; Chen An politely refused, unwilling to live under another family's roof. 1
