Background / History

Hydra was originally defeated and dismantled by S.H.I.E.L.D. after Red Skull’s fall and the destruction of its remaining bases. S.H.I.E.L.D. later absorbed many former Hydra researchers, creating the conditions for the organization’s covert revival as “Hydra-S.H.I.E.L.D.” 78 173

By the time Du Mu became involved, Hydra’s infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D. was extensive enough that its clearance ranks were interchangeable with S.H.I.E.L.D.’s. Its agents occupied major operational positions while concealing themselves beneath S.H.I.E.L.D. uniforms and credentials. 30 130 173

Du Mu exploited Hydra’s authentication slogan and unconditional cooperation rules early in his association with the organization. By saying “Hail Hydra” and presenting his demands as mission requirements, he compelled Sitwell to surrender his car keys and wallet. 51

During Loki’s invasion, Hydra agents embedded in S.H.I.E.L.D. paradoxically defended S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters against agents controlled by Loki through Nick Fury. This event exposed how deeply Hydra personnel had become intertwined with the agency’s daily operations. 89 91

Pierce considered S.H.I.E.L.D. Hydra’s property and refused to let Loki’s forces destroy it. Hydra deployed the brainwashed Winter Soldier under a S.H.I.E.L.D. identity to capture Fury, bringing him into conflict with Du Mu and Steve Rogers before Du Mu secured Fury himself. 91 92

Hydra’s European faction, led by Baron Strucker, maintained a secret research base in Sokovia. Du Mu delivered Loki’s Scepter to the facility, enabling the reactivation of Chitauri weapons and biological-effect experiments on local test subjects. 130 134

After becoming Sokovia’s monarch, Du Mu initially established a cooperative arrangement with Strucker: Du Mu supplied alien technology and experimental resources, while Strucker provided research results and scientific personnel. Hydra concealed Sokovia’s extraordinary developments from foreign observers, and members of the research base began obtaining Sokovian citizenship. Naturalization granted them the benefits of Du Mu’s Monarch of a Nation title, increasing their attributes and permanently raising their favorability toward him by 20. 139

Du Mu later used Wanda’s Chaos Magic to alter Strucker’s loyalty, effectively taking control of Hydra’s European forces. He integrated its personnel into Sokovia as legal citizens, using their expertise to support the country’s reconstruction and military development. 159 160

After exposing Alexander Pierce as a Hydra mole, Du Mu and Nick Fury seized Hydra’s S.H.I.E.L.D. network rather than purging it. Du Mu impersonated Pierce, suspended Project Insight, had Pierce mentally altered into a subordinate, and placed Nick Fury in charge of managing the embedded agents. 173 175 176 177

Under this arrangement, Fury protected Hydra personnel’s identities to preserve S.H.I.E.L.D.’s operations and his own cover. Du Mu also retrieved S.H.I.E.L.D.’s technological data and transferred it to Strucker for Sokovia’s development. 177

Hydra expanded its human-enhancement research by collecting Bucky’s blood to attempt to reproduce the Super Soldier Serum. It subsequently recruited Maya Hansen and seized Killian’s Extremis research, adding another enhancement program to its laboratories. 184 188 189 190

Steve Rogers later investigated Fury as the apparent mastermind behind Hydra’s Project Insight conspiracy. Fury had already informed Natasha of his actual arrangement and enlisted her help in supervising the embedded network. Du Mu and Fury filled Steve’s anti-Hydra team with cooperating agents and delayed his investigation; Steve’s attempt to use the old Hydra slogan then provoked an attack by Sitwell and Rumlow’s team, who were following Du Mu’s changed authentication rules. 244 245 246 247

The investigation uncovered Skrull infiltrators within S.H.I.E.L.D. Hydra personnel helped capture and eliminate the exposed aliens, treating their infiltration as an intrusion into Hydra’s own territory. 250

Hydra subsequently expanded its intelligence reach by placing agents among the Skrulls’ leadership and intelligence departments. With Skrulls infiltrated across the world, Hydra gained access to a global information network. 263

By Chapter 324, Fury had brought the few remaining genuine S.H.I.E.L.D. agents into Hydra. Nearly every key position, from decision-making to execution, was occupied by Hydra personnel, leaving Hill as probably the agency’s only purely S.H.I.E.L.D.-affiliated agent and placing the organization entirely under Du Mu’s indirect control. Hydra’s researchers also began collaborating with Hank from the X-Men world on Compound V. 324

Du Mu later initiated a Venom symbiote breeding project at the Hive Laboratory. Its requirement for a positive personality template could not initially be met by anyone within Hydra. He resolved this by recruiting an older Steve Rogers from another world, who agreed to join temporarily to protect his family and investigate the organization. Old Steve became Captain Hydra and served as the template for a successful symbiote-cultivation assembly line. 431 435

Old Steve’s subsequent investigation revealed an organization far stronger than the Hydra of his own world: it controlled S.H.I.E.L.D. and Wakanda, fielded enhanced ordinary soldiers, and maintained multiple branches and sizable outposts in space. He abandoned the idea of warning the current Avengers immediately, judging their existing strength insufficient for a direct confrontation. Wanda had already discovered his plans and reported them to Du Mu. 436

Parallel-Universe Counterparts

• Earth-839755 Hydra — Rules its own world and created a version of Peter Parker as a killing tool. This Spider-Man worships Captain Hydra and habitually shouts “Hail Hydra”; when Du Mu encounters him, he has been zombified but retains intelligence and speech. 153

Organization

Hydra originally consisted of competing factions rather than a single unified command. Pierce’s S.H.I.E.L.D.-embedded forces and Strucker’s European faction generally pursued their own interests, although they cooperated when useful. Du Mu consolidated control by subjugating both leaders. 130 176

Sokovian Research Base Expansion

The base’s reconstruction removed and replaced its old walls, added several floors, and left only traces of the original castle in its foundation. Its surrounding forest was cleared over a wide area to provide unobstructed surveillance for several kilometers. Guards wearing Sokovian national insignia patrol with modern energy weapons, presenting the appearance of a regular national military installation. 178

Du Mu prohibited experiments on Sokovian citizens, including volunteers previously recruited by Strucker, and returned those volunteers to civilian life. In exchange, he supplied alternative experimental subjects, including foreign mercenaries who had served the former nobles. 139

The research team also developed an antidote that removed Connors’s residual lizard genes and restored him to a normal human state after he was secretly transferred from S.H.I.E.L.D.’s special prison. 436

Symbiote Breeding Project

The breeding program uses Venom as the parent symbiote and Old Steve as a personality template to neutralize the offspring’s darker tendencies. Strucker initiates the laboratory procedure as Experiment X-3643, with Ultron assisting. During an early transformation, Old Steve becomes a blood-red, clawed giant and attacks the isolation chamber; its Vibranium-composite construction prevents a breach. 431 435

Tests of the templated offspring produce highly satisfactory results:

• Their temperaments are stable and friendly, with aggression reduced to an extremely low level. 435
• Host-fusion success improves dramatically, with almost no rejection or loss-of-control cases. 435
• Most substantially enhance their hosts’ physical capabilities and can reshape their hands into whip-blades, sharp blades, or other forms. 435

Production remains limited. Venom expends an unidentified special energy when producing offspring and requires a cooldown between divisions. Old Steve also needs rest because repeated templating strains his mental state, preventing the rapid creation of an entire symbiote army. 435

Living Hydra Mascot

The organization’s mascot is a separate living creature also named Hydra, originally described by the system as a rare nine-headed snake from another planet. Du Mu received it as a mission reward and later kept it in Sokovia. 175 482

The creature remains affectionate and obedient toward Du Mu despite its intimidating transformation. When called, it lowers all nine heads before him, and it stops flicking its tongues and adopts a fierce pose after he reprimands its undignified behavior. Du Mu also presents Stephen Strange as the Eighth City’s Immortal Weapon, claiming that he possesses Hydra’s Power of Nine Dragons. 482
