History

Director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Fury begins as S.H.I.E.L.D.’s director and Du Mu’s principal mission handler. He sends Du Mu to Afghanistan to locate and safely recover the missing Tony Stark, initiating the events surrounding Iron Man’s emergence 1.

He continues assigning Du Mu to anomalous cases, including Hammerhead’s suspected superhuman durability, Tony Stark’s surveillance, the Bronx disappearances, The Hand, Bruce Banner, and the New Mexico incident involving Thor’s hammer 10 13 19 30 36 47. Fury also orders Coulson to secure Obadiah Stane’s Iron Monger facility and technology after Du Mu exposes Stane’s betrayal 16.

Although frequently exasperated by Du Mu’s recklessness, bizarre equipment, and tendency to create collateral problems, Fury values his perfect mission-completion record and exceptional utility. He recognizes that Du Mu possesses unexplained powers, yet considers him too effective to lose 30 46.

Trust in Du Mu

Fury subjects Du Mu to confidentiality testing, including truth serum, and ends the process early because he considers Du Mu’s loyalty unshakable. This confidence leads Fury to entrust him with guarding the newly thawed Steve Rogers and other sensitive operations 62 63.

After the Battle of New York, Fury—temporarily removed as S.H.I.E.L.D. director while Maria Hill serves as acting director—asks Du Mu to investigate Hydra moles within the agency. He believes Du Mu to be among the few agents he can trust, unaware that Du Mu is himself a Hydra operative 95 96.

Loki’s Mind Control

Loki uses his Scepter to mentally control Fury after attacking the Tesseract research facility. Under this control, Fury attacks S.H.I.E.L.D. interests and becomes one of Loki’s agents, prompting Coulson and the Avengers to treat him as an immediate threat 87 89.

Du Mu later captures the mind-controlled Fury during the conflict at S.H.I.E.L.D. Headquarters, preventing the Winter Soldier from taking him first 91 92. Fury’s actions while controlled cause lasting political damage despite Loki’s involvement, contributing to his removal from the directorship 95.

Project Insight and Hydra

Fury becomes suspicious when Project Insight’s launch files appear to have been tampered with. He orders Du Mu to investigate and privately plans to seek Alexander Pierce’s help in postponing the project, not realizing that Pierce is Hydra’s central infiltrator within S.H.I.E.L.D. 171.

Pierce arranges Fury’s assassination after learning of his investigation. Du Mu intervenes, defeats the Winter Soldier, and rescues Fury from the attack 172 173. Du Mu then exposes Pierce as Hydra and gives Fury a “whitelist” of genuine S.H.I.E.L.D. personnel; everyone absent from it is identified as a Hydra spy 173.

Fury accepts Du Mu’s proposal to seize control of Hydra’s infiltrated network rather than purge it outright. He authorizes Du Mu to stop Project Insight, neutralize Pierce, and take command of Hydra within S.H.I.E.L.D. 174.

Hydra Cover

After Du Mu consolidates control over Hydra, he publicly identifies Fury as a long-standing Hydra operative to convince Sitwell and other Hydra agents. Fury is forced to validate the cover by declaring “Hail Hydra” 176.

Du Mu subsequently assigns Fury to manage Hydra’s deeply rooted S.H.I.E.L.D. network. The position restores Fury’s influence within the organization, though Du Mu retains ultimate control over the agents and can turn them against Fury at any time 177.

Steve Rogers later uncovers evidence that appears to identify Fury as Hydra’s mastermind and begins a covert investigation. Fury cannot safely explain that his Hydra role is intended to preserve control of the infiltrated network, as the truth is too implausible to defend 244 245.

Skrull Crisis

During the Skrull conspiracy, Gravik replaces Fury with a Skrull duplicate and imprisons the real Fury beneath the radical Skrulls’ base. Du Mu eventually finds and frees him 260.

Fury attempts to redirect suspicion by blaming the Skrulls for Hydra-linked crimes, illegal S.H.I.E.L.D. operations, genetic-sample collection, Project Insight’s alteration, and his own apparent attack. His account combines genuine events with false attribution, allowing him to temporarily reduce Steve’s suspicions 260 261.

Personality

Fury is pragmatic, secretive, and willing to operate with flexible moral boundaries when he believes it will protect Earth or preserve S.H.I.E.L.D. This pragmatism allows him to approve Du Mu’s plan to co-opt Hydra’s agents rather than destroy the network outright 174.

He is highly trusting of agents who survive his scrutiny, particularly Du Mu, but this trust repeatedly leaves him vulnerable to manipulation. His confidence in Du Mu persists even when he unknowingly assigns the Hydra operative to investigate Hydra 62 95.
