Background / History

Yukari existed before humanity became widespread and witnessed humans develop from a rare species into the dominant population of the world. Foreseeing that the world’s Spiritual Energy would eventually disappear and leave weaker non-humans unable to survive, she conceived Gensokyo as a sanctuary for youkai and other non-human beings. 325

In the distant past, Yukari forcibly made Ran Yakumo her shikigami. Around that period, she sought out the human Yuyuko Saigyouji after hearing of the girl’s power over death. Though Yukari initially intended to eliminate Yuyuko as a potential danger, she instead took the isolated girl outside to see the world. When Yuyuko took her own life at eighteen beneath the Saigyo Ayakashi, Yukari buried her and destroyed the Saigyouji family, whom she held responsible for Yuyuko’s confinement and death. 325

After encountering Lu Qiming, Yukari initially intended to capture the apparent outsider, interrogate him about other worlds, and plunder his Divine Kingdom. Recognizing his strength and usefulness, she instead entered a pragmatic friendship and alliance with him. 293 294

Personality

Yukari is calculating, inquisitive, and habitually manipulative. She observes events through hidden Gaps, probes others for information, and prefers arranging circumstances so that opponents reveal themselves or act according to her plans. Her curiosity extends to unfamiliar power systems, other worlds, gods, magic, and even the Dungeon Consciousness. 294 309 325 376 484

She is also playful and provocative, frequently teasing Lu Qiming, appearing unexpectedly through Gaps, and presenting herself as a “pure seventeen-year-old girl” despite her ancient age. 308 365 420

Behind this levity, Yukari is ruthless when her authority or plans are challenged. She considers expendable youkai and Great Demons acceptable cannon fodder, treats threats with open contempt, and has no hesitation using fear, killing intent, or her Gap to punish enemies. 300 310 343 386

Yuyuko is one of Yukari’s central attachments. She protects Yuyuko’s past from her, feeds and indulges her, and regards threats or intrusions involving Yuyuko with particular severity. 300 325 337

Moon Surface War

Yukari gathered Great Demons and lesser youkai for an assault on the Moon Capital, presenting the operation as part of her larger plan to establish Gensokyo. In reality, she viewed much of the army as cannon fodder and intended the war to remove dangerous or obstructive demons from the future youkai paradise. 300 310

She recruited powerful combatants including Yuuka Kazami and the Oni Tribe’s Four Heavenly Kings, while arranging Lu Qiming’s participation through negotiation and manipulation. 308 310

During the conflict, Yukari dealt with rebellious Great Demons, was briefly trapped by Eirin’s barrier, and ultimately returned with Spirit Iron as payment to Lu Qiming after the Moon Surface War ended in a compromise. 314 315

Establishment of Gensokyo

As the world’s Spiritual Energy disappeared faster than expected, Yukari accelerated her original centuries-long plan. She chose to establish the Great Barrier first through the Boundary Between Illusion and Reality, then move youkai into the isolated territory while the Hakurei Great Barrier was completed. 334

Klee became Gensokyo’s Spiritual Energy anchor, while Yukari selected her disciple Kagome as the reality-side anchor and Hakurei Miko. 334 The Great Barrier was later completed, with Kagome merging with it and becoming its God. 343

A century later, Yukari cooperated with Lu Qiming, Kagome, and others to synchronize Gensokyo with Lu Qiming’s Divine Kingdom, establishing the Hakurei Great Barrier connection. 365

Exploration of Other Worlds

Yukari accompanied Lu Qiming’s group into the Fairy Tail World, where she explored local magic and knowledge, investigated the disappearance of gods, and raided royal treasuries across the continent. 376 378 379
