Background / History

Gandalf is a Maia who has walked Middle-earth for three thousand years. He is one of five wizards sent there and a known member of the White Council alongside Galadriel, Elrond, Saruman, Radagast, and Círdan. 49 178 216

He first meets Morgan while travelling at night near the forest. Morgan's generosity over a meal quickly establishes a friendly rapport between them; Gandalf subsequently offers him work as a bounty hunter and recruits him for Thorin Oakenshield's expedition. 1 2 5

Appearance

Gandalf initially appears as a tall elderly man in grey, but his physical endurance and agility far exceed his age. After surviving Moria and the Balrog, he returns as the White Wizard, with entirely white hair and beard and a markedly more authoritative presence. 1 79 206

Gandalf is righteous, firm, witty, and humorous. He is comfortable teasing trusted companions, particularly Morgan, yet remains serious and decisive when lives or the wider fate of Middle-earth are at stake. 2 4 61
