Background / History
Morgan is a soul-transmigrated man from Earth who previously lived as a veteran underground fighter. He awakens in the body of a Fero Town guard while being hunted by two fellow guards; the original body's conflict with the guard captain stemmed from an affair with the captain's wife. Morgan kills his pursuers, loots them, and abandons Fero Town rather than return 1.
Soon afterward, he kills a Giant Bear and discovers the Time Traveler System. Its first Soul Power point leads him to conclude that Soul Power is earned by killing creatures at least comparable to himself in strength. The system also preserves his Muay Thai experience from Earth and the body's existing swordsmanship and archery training 1.
Morgan meets Gandalf near the Shire, immediately recognizes him from his knowledge of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and adopts “Bounty Hunter” as his public identity. Seeking access to major events and opportunities for growth, he uses Intimacy to strengthen Gandalf's favorable impression and accepts work connected to Thorin Oakenshield's expedition 2 11.
Appearance
Morgan is a black-haired human whose appearance remains notably unchanged across sixty years in Middle-earth. Others speculate that he may be Dúnedain, although Morgan knows this body was originally an ordinary human and attributes his slowed aging to the system's enhancements 173 176.
- Often described as exceptionally handsome after adapting to his changed appearance 5.
- Wears dark-red armor forged from Smaug's dragon scales when preparing for major battles or political confrontations 190 312.
- Uses the identity of the Black Knight during covert operations in King's Landing 174 289.
- His enhanced Constitution grants exceptional heat resistance and physical endurance 265.
Personality
Morgan is pragmatic, ambitious, and highly conscious of the value of power. He entered Middle-earth excited rather than frightened by transmigration, seeing a world of cold weapons and the Time Traveler System as an opportunity to achieve greatness 1. He carefully manages Soul Power, prioritizing abilities that suit his immediate role and refusing to waste it on Muay Thai once it becomes less useful 19 113.
His self-preservation is a defining trait: Morgan explicitly recognizes that he is not inclined to risk his life for others without reason. However, this does not prevent him from protecting companions when he judges action necessary, such as saving Thorin, Gloin, Frodo, and others during critical battles 20 88 116 199.
As his power and status grow, Morgan becomes increasingly willing to pursue wealth, fame, and political authority. He seeks a secure share of Erebor's treasure, deliberately builds a reputation in King's Landing, and later transitions from an independent wanderer into Astapor's ruler 73 288 318.
Abilities & Skills
Time Traveler System
Morgan's system displays his attributes, skills, Biological Level, Soul Power, and World Exploration Progress.
- Soul Power acquisition — Morgan believes it is gained by killing beings equal to or stronger than himself; killing a weak lone wolf gave him nothing 1.
- Enhancement — Soul Power upgrades attributes and learned abilities, granting physical improvement, restored stamina, and fragments of practical experience 19 20.
- World Exploration Progress — Morgan determines that meeting and participating alongside major plot figures greatly increases progress 11.
- Achievement rewards — Reaching major exploration thresholds can provide special skills, including the Dimensional Magic Teleportation Array 319.
Archery
Archery is Morgan's principal combat specialty and reaches Mastery LV4.
- Level 2 gives him intuitive awareness of an arrow's likely hit upon release 9.
- He considers his accuracy and technique comparable to Legolas and Tauriel, while recognizing their far greater experience as archers 103.
- At King's Landing's tourney, he hits three bullseyes with a single shot and wins the archery competition 282 289.
- Eagle Eye is unlocked at Archery Mastery LV4; its exact effect is not described in the available material 127.
White Crow Swordsmanship
Morgan initially inherits White Crow Swordsmanship from the Fero Town guard body, then develops it to Mastery LV4.
- Provides his primary close-quarters style alongside his superior physical attributes 1 19.
- Swift Flash lets him deliver an extreme-speed sword strike against nearby enemies 158.
- His swordsmanship and speed allow him to defeat multiple tournament knights in rapid succession 283.
Muay Thai
Morgan retains Muay Thai LV2 from his former life as an underground fighter.
- It reflects his pre-transmigration combat background 1.
- He later regards it as inefficient to enhance compared with archery, swordsmanship, and core attributes 113 158.
Intimacy
Intimacy is Morgan's initial special talent.
- Temporarily and significantly improves a target's favorability toward him 2.
- Morgan uses it on Gandalf while seeking entry into Thorin's Company, with immediate results 2 74.
Special Techniques
| Technique | Description and documented use |
|---|---|
| Rock Body | Temporarily makes Morgan's body as hard as stone. It has a limited duration and consumes energy afterward; he uses it against the river monster outside Moria and to withstand Uruk-hai spears 74 199 224. |
| Dragon Power | A Strength-based special technique. Morgan uses it to overwhelm Jaime Lannister in a joust 76 286. |
| Charge | A burst-movement technique used to rapidly close distance and kill two giant spiders while rescuing Gloin 75 88. |
| Mental Shock | Concentrates mental force into a tangible attack; Morgan uses it to subdue the defiant Yunkai envoy Kubo 76 338. |
| Anywhere Door | An escape-oriented special skill. Morgan considers using it when dragged underwater by the river creature at Moria 199 203. |
| Dimensional Magic Teleportation Array | Requires preparation, chanting, and treasure as energy. It can summon willing people or creatures from elsewhere in the world or from other dimensions 319. |
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Dimensional Ring / Space Ring — Stores Morgan's possessions in a separate space, including gemstones, supplies, trophies, and large carcasses 73 262.
- Dark-red dragon-scale armor — Forged from Smaug's scales and delivered from Erebor by Gloin and Gimli. It is notably resistant to attacks and is Morgan's signature battle armor 190 224 312.
- Elven Longsword — Morgan's primary sword, carried alongside his dragon-scale armor 288 312.
- Longbow — His primary ranged weapon and the foundation of his greatest combat skill 262.
- Black Arrow — Used alongside Bard in the killing of Smaug 169.
- Smaug's horns and spare scales — Kept as valuable materials capable of increasing his strength through equipment-making 155 176.
Relationships
- Gandalf — Morgan's first major ally in Middle-earth. Gandalf gives him his first commission, and Morgan later preserves Gandalf's body in hope of his return as a White Wizard 2 205.
- Tauriel — Morgan's elven wife. Their relationship develops during the Lonely Mountain period, and Morgan later plans to reunite with her and their children across worlds 164 319.
- Thorin Oakenshield — Expedition leader and complicated ally. Morgan repeatedly saves Thorin's life, but later distrusts Thorin's willingness to honor commitments involving treasure 116 125.
- Bard — Fellow archer and dragon-slaying partner. Morgan warns Bard about both Thorin's greed and Alfrid's likely treachery 125 127 169.
- Bilbo Baggins — Long-standing friend. Morgan recognizes Bilbo's worsening struggle against the One Ring and later attends his 111th birthday 173 177.
- Aragorn — Ally during the Ring journey. They fight together against Ringwraiths and protect the Hobbits 190.
- Arya Stark — Morgan's swordsmanship student. He trains her harshly but consistently, and she looks to him as a model for combat 276 283.
- Eddard Stark — Morgan's former lord and employer in Westeros. Eddard brings him south as House Stark's swordmaster and entrusts him to watch Arya 266.
- Afra — Initially Morgan's purchased slave; later appointed chief steward of Astapor. Morgan gives her responsibility and reassures her when she fears being surpassed by Missandei 301 315 335.
- Missandei — Morgan's interpreter and trusted administrator. She manages property confiscations after Astapor's takeover and accompanies him on the Yunkai campaign 312 317 335.
- Barristan Selmy — Former Kingsguard commander who reunites with Morgan in Astapor and joins his war council and army 322 334.
- Sigryia — Morgan's young black dragon and most important siege weapon. Their bond is close enough that she understands his intentions without explicit orders 312 318 338.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Middle-earth: Thorin's Expedition
Morgan joins Thorin's Company through Gandalf's commission, using the journey to gain Soul Power and raise World Exploration Progress. His contributions include killing three Stone Trolls, the Goblin King, and the Warg King, repeatedly saving Thorin and earning the Company's respect 11 116.
During the later stages of the quest, Morgan becomes a recognized hero among Lake-town's survivors after helping Bard kill Smaug. He assists Bard's refugees, distrusts Alfrid, and warns Bard that Thorin may refuse to share Erebor's wealth 124 125 169.
Middle-earth: The Ring Conflict
Sixty years after the Lonely Mountain expedition, Morgan has barely aged and returns to the Shire for Bilbo's birthday. He recognizes that the next great conflict has begun and reconnects with major figures because his World Exploration Progress has stagnated during the long peace 173.
Morgan battles Ringwraiths alongside Aragorn, Legolas, and the Hobbits. At Moria, he attempts to save Frodo from a river creature, is dragged underwater, activates Rock Body, and is swallowed—leading the Company to believe he has died 190 199. He survives, later gains the Anywhere Door skill, and continues strengthening himself after Gandalf's apparent death 203 205.
Westeros: House Stark and King's Landing
Morgan later arrives in Winterfell, gathers information as a prospective mercenary, and becomes associated with House Stark. He teaches Arya swordsmanship, accompanies the Starks toward King's Landing, and uses his tournament victories to build the fame he deliberately seeks 250 266 276 288.
At the King's Landing tourney, Morgan wins the mounted joust, archery contest, and group melee, becoming the Triple Crown champion. He later defeats Jaime Lannister, kills Gregor Clegane, and becomes embroiled in the conflict between House Stark and House Lannister 286 289 298.
Westeros: Dragon Egg and Astapor
Operating as the Black Knight, Morgan attacks the Black Merchant Guild's convoy and steals a dragon egg despite its mercenaries and reinforcements 289 290. After purchasing Afra and travelling east, he appears at Astapor with the young dragon Sigryia and uses the Golden Scepter to command the Unsullied 301 312.
Morgan turns the Unsullied against the slave masters, captures Astapor, moves into Kraznys's castle, and assumes the position of Governor. He appoints Afra as chief steward, gives Missandei and her brothers administrative and military responsibilities, and begins consolidating the city before expanding further 315 317 319.
Campaign Against Yunkai
Morgan prepares a 10,000-man army for war against Yunkai, personally designs its black-dragon-and-inverted-sword banner, and equips Sigryia with dragon armor 334 335. He uses Sigryia's dragonfire to breach Yunkai's defenses and intimidate its envoys, forcing the city toward unconditional surrender 336 338.
Trivia
- Morgan's apparent lack of aging over sixty years causes Gandalf, Aragorn, and others to suspect Dúnedain ancestry, though Morgan has no proof of such lineage 173 176 186.
- He privately considers many of his public titles embarrassing and rarely introduces himself with them 328.
- In Middle-earth, his World Exploration Progress reaches 19.22%; after arriving in Westeros, the displayed progress begins again at a much lower value of 0.33% 244 265.
