Background / History
Luffy was raised in Foosha Village after his grandfather, Marine Vice Admiral Garp, entrusted him to local caretakers. At seven years old, he was a curious and carefree child living under the care of the mountain bandit Dadan. 16
Minato Namikaze tested Luffy through three illusion trials intended to expose desire and fear. Luffy resisted the temptation of food, recognized a false image of Garp, overcame his fear of falling, and fought a phantom of himself for two hours without giving up. 16
Minato privately awarded him the Gum-Gum Fruit. Luffy ate it because he believed it might taste good, gained rubber powers, and began training with Minato’s Shadow Clone. 16 17
When Shanks confronted the severely injured Minato, Luffy stood between them despite being vastly weaker. Shanks recognized his spirit, entrusted him with Roger’s Straw Hat, and challenged him to one day surpass him. Minato’s farewell letter further strengthened Luffy’s resolve to pursue freedom by becoming the Pirate King. 19

He is reckless but deeply loyal. He protects Minato from Shanks, fights Garp to rescue Ace, and rushes into danger for his brothers and crew. 19 149 253
Luffy’s compassion shapes his decisions. He refuses to cooperate with the Revolutionary Army when he believes it disregards Night Raid’s safety, and he defeats Kurome without killing her despite her hostility. 278
As captain, he values his companions above personal gain, using his own Main God Space points to heal the Straw Hat crew and accepting Law as an ally and companion. 270 271
