The Tao that can be told is not the eternal Tao. The name that can be named is not the eternal name.

The nameless is the beginning of heaven and earth; the named is the mother of all things.

What people dislike are the terms "lonely," "solitary," and "worthless," yet kings and dukes use them as titles. Thus, things may be diminished to be increased, or increased to be diminished. What others teach, I also teach.

Heaven and earth are not benevolent; they treat all things as straw dogs. The sage is not benevolent; he treats the common people as straw dogs. Is the space between heaven and earth not like a bellows? It is empty yet inexhaustible; the more it moves, the more it produces. Too many words lead to exhaustion; it is better to hold to the center.

"Below the sage, all are ants. To not become a sage is to be an ant."
