Background

Lei Chen arrived in the Dragon Ball world as a child when his spaceship malfunctioned and stranded him on a primitive planet. He remained there for more than forty years, missing major events in the wider world while studying cultivation concepts, martial arts manuals, and the Dao of space and time. He escaped the planet after mastering Instant Transmission. 1 2

After Majin Buu's defeat, Lei Chen recognized that he was behind Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, and the stronger members of the Dragon Team. He deliberately established a rapport with Goku to secure entry to the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, where he pursued solitary enlightenment rather than conventional sparring or physical drills. 1

His cultivation centered on absorbing life energy and primordial energy from his surroundings. This approach led him to awaken Super Saiyan God independently, develop a connection to nature, and later cultivate Senzu Beans with Divine Soil. 2 3 14 15

He is also calculating. Early in the story, he considers Goku easy to influence and intentionally befriends him to access the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
