Background and Story Role
Kankuro is the older brother of Gaara and a member of Sunagakure’s sibling team. In its early battles, Gaara drew attacks with his defense, Temari controlled space with Wind Release, and Kankuro struck unexpectedly with puppets. During the Sasuke Retrieval mission, Kankuro killed Sakon and Ukon 345 380 381.
When Deidara abducted Gaara, Kankuro pursued him. He then confronted Sasori with all three of his puppets and was swiftly defeated, although he emerged almost physically uninjured 385 391.
After Sasori’s death, Kankuro acquired his puppet body and used it during the Fourth Shinobi World War. He also fought Sasori’s reincarnated form, which lacked the poison, mechanisms, and puppet body Sasori had used in life 381 413.
Appearance
- Described as a burly man about 1.75 metres tall 380.
- In his early appearances, carried a cloth-wrapped puppet on his back and often wore a self-assured expression 380.
Personality
Kankuro is described as flamboyant and sometimes rash, in contrast to Temari’s more meticulous manner. His early fighting style nevertheless relied on calm misdirection: he kept opponents uncertain about which figure was his real body and what weapons his puppets concealed 379 380.
Abilities & Skills
Puppet Technique
Kankuro controls puppets equipped for attack, capture, and defense. His early approach favored concealed mechanisms and surprise over direct confrontation 380 381.
- Black Secret Technique: Machine One Shot — Black Ant traps a target in its abdomen, allowing Crow to attack the captive 381.
- Self-protection — He can use a puppet in his place to confuse opponents and keep his real body away from close combat 380 381.
- Limits — He has not demonstrated control of ten or a hundred puppets at once, and acquiring Sasori’s body did not give him Sasori’s level of control or technique 380 381.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Crow — Sasori-made offensive puppet with three eyes, four arms, and numerous weapons 381.
- Black Ant — Sasori-made capture puppet used in combination with Crow 381.
- Ibuse — Bulky defensive puppet, also attributed to Sasori; has few offensive options 381.
- Sasori’s puppet body — Acquired after Sasori’s death; contains mechanisms and fire- and water-based equipment, but Kankuro cannot use Performance of a Hundred Puppets 381.
- Father and Mother — Puppets made by Sasori and later modified by Chiyo, who entrusted them to Kankuro. He rarely uses them in battle 381.
Relationships
- Gaara — Younger brother and Kazekage; Kankuro served as his deputy and pursued him after his abduction 345 381 385.
- Temari — Sister and fellow member of the Sunagakure sibling team 379 380.
- Sasori — Creator of Kankuro’s original three puppets. Sasori defeated him; Kankuro later acquired his puppet body and fought his reincarnated form 381 391 413.
- Chiyo — Fellow Sunagakure puppet master who entrusted Father and Mother to him 381.
