Background & History
Root ambitions and hostility toward the Uchiha
After the war, Danzō sought support among Konoha's clans and attempted to draw Uchiha Fugaku into cooperation. Fugaku rejected him, affirming that the Uchiha would place the village first. Danzō responded with a threat that the entire clan would suffer the consequences of refusing him 12.
He also attempted to enlist Orochimaru in a plot against the Fourth Hokage, but Orochimaru rejected the Hokage position as beneath his scientific ambitions 21. During the Nine-Tails' Rampage, Danzō kept Root inactive and tried to assign the Uchiha-controlled guard force to evacuation duties while stressing that the attacker had used a Sharingan, casting suspicion on the clan 46.
Danzō ordered Kano to use his incomplete Wood Release against the Nine-Tails despite recognizing that the attempt was likely suicidal 49. He later tried to capture Uchiha Qingfeng and attempted to assassinate Hiruzen Sarutobi to seize power; Hiruzen nevertheless chose to protect him 67.
Pursuit of power
Following the decline of Root, Danzō asked Orochimaru to eliminate Qingfeng, whom he considered an intolerable Uchiha variable. He then accepted a Hashirama Cells transplant despite knowing that many prior subjects had died during the procedure 71.
His augmentation enabled him to use several transplanted Sharingan and Izanagi. Danzō treated these stolen eyes as expendable lives, using them to escape otherwise fatal attacks 207 317.
Manipulating Yamato and targeting Uchiha heirs
When Hiruzen transferred Kano to his care and renamed him Yamato, Danzō removed the Root seal but continued exploiting Yamato's conditioning to obtain intelligence on Qingfeng and Itachi 161 174. After learning of Qingfeng's rapid growth, he planned to murder both Qingfeng and Itachi during an off-village mission, provoke Fugaku into rebellion, and use the resulting “coup” as justification to eradicate the Uchiha 175.
During the mission, Danzō attacked Itachi with Vacuum Spheres, seized Yamato as leverage, and openly declared that every Uchiha should die for Konoha's stability. He considered Yamato, Kakashi, and any other obstacle acceptable sacrifices 206. Kakuzu subsequently betrayed him and forced Danzō to spend a Sharingan on Izanagi before he retreated 207.
Fall from Konoha
After returning to Konoha, Danzō fabricated a report that concealed his attempt on the Uchiha heirs and suggested that Kakashi was a spy. Hiruzen saw through the account enough to order him back into Root and bar him from Uchiha affairs 211.
Danzō later prepared to use evidence of Orochimaru's human experimentation to destroy Orochimaru politically and resumed plotting against Fugaku 285 291. Orochimaru's counterevidence instead exposed Danzō's own crimes. Konoha expelled him, designated him an S-rank Rogue Ninja, dissolved Root, and installed new Anbu leadership 305 306.
Hiruzen secretly helped Danzō escape the village but warned him never to return. Minato and Kakashi pursued him, forcing him into battle outside Konoha 314 315. After using Izanagi to survive a lethal strike, Danzō severed his corrupted Hashirama-cell arm and fled 317.
Akatsuki captivity and death
Danzō encountered Kisame Hoshigaki and Jūzō Biwa in the Land of Rivers. Too injured to fight, he claimed to be a Konoha ninja fleeing after stealing a Sharingan and offered his value as a combatant in exchange for being taken to their organization 321.
Pain recognized him immediately upon arrival in the Land of Rain. Danzō tried to trade Konoha intelligence and portray Qingfeng as a hidden threat, but Pain removed his final Sharingan instead 326 327. When Danzō attempted to destroy the Akatsuki base with the Reverse Four Symbols Seal, Sanryo chained and sealed him, leaving him powerless and imprisoned 327 328.
Qingfeng later confronted the imprisoned Danzō, who remained unapologetic and continued to insist that he had acted for Konoha. Danzō eventually activated his seal upon death; Pain killed him and used Shinra Tensei to destroy both the seal and Danzō's body 415 416.
Appearance
In his later years, Danzō was an elderly shinobi who relied on a cane and concealed his transplanted Sharingan. His escape from Konoha left him permanently one-armed and physically diminished 174 317.
- Carried a transplanted Sharingan in his right eye; the eye could not be deactivated while he was fleeing Konoha 317 321.
- Used a cane while commanding Root and interrogating Yamato 174.
- Lost his Hashirama-cell-enhanced arm after it began transforming into a tree 317.
- Lost his final Sharingan to Pain and was later imprisoned without chakra 327 328.
Personality
Danzō viewed himself as Konoha's necessary darkness: a man entitled to commit any atrocity if he believed it would secure the village. He regarded allies, subordinates, and civilians as tools that could be discarded for “stability,” including Yamato and Kakashi 206.
His nationalism was inseparable from personal ambition. He repeatedly pursued the Hokage position, attempted to assassinate Hiruzen, and sought to weaken or eliminate political rivals such as Fugaku, Orochimaru, Qingfeng, and Itachi 21 67 175 291. Even after becoming a rogue ninja and prisoner, he blamed the Uchiha for his downfall rather than accepting responsibility 306 327.
Despite his harsh image, Danzō feared death and regretted failing to volunteer himself during a past retreat—an act he believed cost him his chance to become Hokage. His final choices still prioritized survival and destruction over remorse 327.
Abilities & Skills
Wind Release
Danzō's primary chakra nature is Wind Release. He can fire techniques in rapid succession and maintain pressure without allowing an opponent time to recover 54.
- Vacuum Sphere — Fires compressed Wind Release bullets in a machine-gun-like barrage; used to pin down Itachi and target both Kakashi and Minato 206 316.
- Great Vacuum Sphere — A stronger Wind Release projectile used while pursuing Qingfeng 55.
- Vacuum Wave — A Wind Release attack Qingfeng had to evade during their first battle 55.
- Can store chakra in his mouth to launch Vacuum Spheres even when unable to form hand seals 316.
Izanagi
Danzō uses the forbidden Uchiha ocular technique Izanagi to rewrite fatal outcomes as illusions.
- Survived Kakuzu's Black Tiger Steals Heart by sacrificing a Sharingan 207.
- Used Izanagi again after Minato mortally wounded him, allowing him to escape Konoha's pursuit 317.
- His Hashirama Cells enhanced his control over transplanted Sharingan, making Izanagi possible despite not being an Uchiha 317.
- Lost access to Izanagi after Pain removed his final Sharingan 327.
Hashirama Cells augmentation
Danzō underwent a hazardous transplant to increase his strength and support additional Sharingan 71.
- Enhanced his combat ability enough to feel confident challenging Hiruzen's influence 168.
- Enabled the use of Izanagi with transplanted Sharingan 317.
- Caused his arm to mutate into a tree after extensive Izanagi use, forcing him to amputate it 317.
Reverse Four Symbols Seal
Danzō's final technique was a suicide seal designed to annihilate himself and all nearby enemies.
- Could seal everything in a wide area after activation 327.
- Was initially suppressed by Sanryo's Adamantine Sealing Chains, Four Symbols Seal, Five Elements Seal, and Eight Trigrams Seal 327.
- Activated upon his death, but Pain destroyed the expanding seal and Danzō's body with Shinra Tensei 416.
Summoning Technique
Danzō can summon the Baku, a summoning beast used during his battle against Kakashi and Minato.
- The Baku was destroyed by Kakashi's Lightning Cutter 316.
Equipment
- Cane — Used while leading Root and meeting Yamato 174.
- Kunai — Used during his escape and confrontation with Kisame 315 321.
- Sealing-jutsu scroll — Used to apply a sealing technique to himself after escaping Minato and Kakashi 317.
- Transplanted Sharingan — Formerly implanted in his arm and right eye; consumed through Izanagi or removed by Pain 317 327.
Relationships
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former close friend and political rival. Danzō attempted to assassinate him, yet Hiruzen repeatedly shielded him and ultimately helped him escape Konoha 67 314.
- Orochimaru — Longstanding collaborator in secret research and transplants. Danzō repeatedly sought Orochimaru's help to eliminate Qingfeng, then attempted to use Orochimaru's human experiments against him 71 175 285.
- Uchiha Fugaku — Political enemy. Fugaku rejected Danzō's offers, while Danzō threatened him and plotted to dismantle the Uchiha clan 12 291.
- Uchiha Qingfeng — Primary target and adversary. Danzō tried to capture or kill him, coveted his Sharingan, and blamed him for his own downfall 55 175 327.
- Uchiha Itachi — Target of Danzō's plan to provoke an Uchiha coup; attacked with Vacuum Spheres during the mountain ambush 175 206.
- Yamato / Kano — Former Root subordinate whom Danzō continued to manipulate after his transfer to Hiruzen. Danzō ultimately deemed him a disposable sacrifice 174 206.
- Kakashi Hatake — Saved Qingfeng from Danzō's first attack, later pursued Danzō with Minato and destroyed the Baku 55 316.
- Minato Namikaze — Opposed Danzō's continued influence and pursued him after his escape from Konoha 305 315.
- Pain / Nagato — Captor and executioner. Pain removed Danzō's final Sharingan, imprisoned him, and later killed him 327 416.
- Uzumaki Sanryo — Neutralized Danzō's Reverse Four Symbols Seal and stripped him of his remaining chakra 327.
