Background and History

Deidara trained under the Third Tsuchikage, Ōnoki, but his experiments with explosions caused so much damage that he was made to live outside Iwagakure. He accompanied Ōnoki’s delegation to Konoha for the Chunin Exams, where Uchiha Qingfeng stopped him from setting off Explosive Clay near civilians 340 510.

In his exam match against C, Deidara gained an aerial advantage and bombarded the arena with clay creations. He kept attacking after C surrendered, then attacked the referee for calling his behavior meaningless. Qingfeng brought him down, and Deidara lost his qualification to advance. Ōnoki urged him to develop attacks large enough to overcome opponents who could evade his explosions 367 368 369.

Qingfeng later persuaded Deidara to leave with him by promising to make his name and art famous. Qingfeng introduced him to the Akatsuki, where Pain accepted him as an ordinary member. Deidara initially struggled with the other members’ hostility and dismissal of his art, and preferred to stay close to Qingfeng 511 519 523 527.

During the conflict with Iwagakure, Deidara worried about Akatsuchi and Kurotsuchi when the Akatsuki threatened the village. He nevertheless took part in its destruction, seeking to prove his talent to Ōnoki 750 753 754. Later, Itachi countered his Explosion Release with Lightning Style and caught him in a genjutsu. Qingfeng rescued him; rather than carry out a suicide attack, Deidara chose to work on C4 765 766.

Ten years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, Deidara is the Ninja Republic’s foremost demolition expert. He uses his explosions to clear mountains for construction and is widely known by the title “Master” 860.

Personality

Deidara believes that art is the fleeting beauty of an explosion. He seeks an audience for his work and grows bolder when spectators cheer, but takes criticism of his art personally—even attacking an exam referee over it 340 367 368.

He can be calculating as well as impulsive: he provokes C to buy time to prepare clay before taking flight. Defeats and criticism also push him to improve, from deciding to train his left eye after Qingfeng’s genjutsu to pursuing larger and more precise explosives 341 367 369 556. Though he enjoys destruction, he shows concern for his former comrades when Iwagakure is threatened 750.

Explosion Release and Explosive Clay

Deidara molds and detonates Explosive Clay through his Explosion Release Kekkei Genkai. Preparing creations requires him to feed clay into the mouths on his hands 519 367.

• C4 — Deidara envisions a giant creation resembling himself that would explode at the cellular level. He has not completed it by the time of his encounter with Itachi and subsequently goes into seclusion to develop it 764 766.
• Suicide attack — he considers detonating himself against the Allied Shinobi Forces, but Qingfeng talks him out of it 766.

Relationships

• Uchiha Qingfeng — recruits and mentors Deidara, protects him within the Akatsuki, and rescues him from Itachi. Deidara calls him “Boss Qingfeng” and relies on his guidance 511 519 527 765.
