Appearance
Yamcha is described as a tall, handsome man whose appearance immediately catches Bulma’s attention. 11 12
- Carries a sword during his early desert-bandit encounters. 10 11
- His later weakened, depleted aura alarms Wuchen during the martial arts tournament. 49
Personality
Initially, Yamcha is proud, opportunistic, and easily provoked. He introduces himself grandly as the desert’s ruling bandit, resents being dismissed by Wuchen, and reacts angrily when Goku treats their confrontation as a casual lesson. 10 11
He has a severe fear of women his own age: contact or even proximity leaves him dizzy, weak, and unable to act normally. Despite this, he is drawn to Bulma and initially pursues the Dragon Balls in hopes of curing this problem. 11 12 13
Yamcha is capable of self-reflection and ambition. After losing to Krillin at the World Martial Arts Tournament and witnessing the others’ cultivation, he resolves to train seriously rather than fall behind. 26 28 His enthusiasm can still become vanity or overconfidence, and his excessive indulgence later harms his health and cultivation prospects. 49
Abilities & Skills
Wolf Fang Fist
Yamcha’s signature unarmed technique is a fast, claw-like fighting style.
- Uses rapid, fierce strikes and difficult attack angles. 11
- Is more proficient in close-quarters combat than swordplay. 11
- Briefly trades blows evenly with Goku before Goku’s greater strength and combat adaptability overwhelm him. 11
Swordsmanship
Yamcha initially fights with a sword carried at his waist.
- Opens his battle with Goku using sword slashes and sustained offensive pressure. 10 11
- His attacks are repeatedly blocked by Goku’s Power Pole. 11
Cultivation
Yamcha begins studying spiritual-energy cultivation after Wuchen shares its basic principles with the group.
- Receives initial pointers from Goku while attempting meditation and cultivation practice. 27
- Trains at Bulma’s West City sanctuary, which includes meditation platforms, spiritual plants, automated care systems, and adjustable light-focusing devices. 28
- His depleted condition later suggests that excessive indulgence has impaired his vital essence and made cultivation more difficult. 49
Rescue and Evasion
Though outmatched by the transformed Saiyan brothers, Yamcha acts decisively to protect others.
- Pulls Bulma and Oolong away from the Ox-King’s thrown axe at Mount Fry-Pan. 15
- Helps Bulma escape while Great Ape Wuchen rampages. 15
Equipment / Items
- Sword — his primary weapon during his first battle with Goku. 10 11
- Hoi-Poi Capsules — steals Bulma’s capsule case with Puar and later uses capsule technology during his bandit activities. 12
- Miniature signal transmitter — secretly plants one on Bulma’s camper to track the Dragon Ball seekers. 13
- Chain — selects a special chain from the Ox-King’s recovered treasures and gives it to Bulma so she can string her fire-resistant bead. 18
Relationships
- Puar — His cat companion and partner in banditry; Puar supports Yamcha’s plans, worries about his fear of women, and follows his lead. 10 12
- Son Goku — Initially opponents. Goku defeats Yamcha but accepts his apology without suspicion; Yamcha later trains under Goku’s informal guidance. 11 13 27
- Bu Wuchen — Wuchen orders Goku to drive Yamcha away rather than confronting him himself. Yamcha later recognizes Wuchen as overwhelmingly dangerous after witnessing his Great Ape transformation. 10 15 16
- Bulma — Yamcha is intensely attracted to Bulma despite his phobia. Their bond develops through the Dragon Ball journey; he declines to make a wish after she indicates she no longer needs one for a boyfriend, and Bulma later refers to him as her boyfriend. 16 17 28
- Oolong — Travels with him as part of Bulma’s group after their early conflict. Oolong is also a former classmate of Puar. 10 12
- Ox-King — Yamcha tells the Ox-King that Goku and Wuchen are Sun Wufan’s grandsons and possess the Power Pole, helping establish the brothers’ connection to him. 15
- Master Roshi and Krillin — Joins them in the World Martial Arts Tournament and later begins cultivation alongside their wider group. 26 27
Background and History
Yamcha first appears in the desert with Puar, demanding money, capsules, and Bulma’s capsule house from Goku’s group. Wuchen instead orders Goku to fight him as combat practice. Yamcha initially relies on his sword, then challenges Goku to a bare-handed fight and unleashes the Wolf Fang Fist. Although he pressures Goku, he is eventually defeated and flees after Bulma wakes from the destroyed capsule house. 10 11
After the defeat, Yamcha and Puar steal Bulma’s Hoi-Poi Capsules. His stated ambition is to overcome his fear of women, but his attraction to Bulma keeps drawing him back toward the group. He later offers Goku a false apology, gains Goku’s forgiveness, and secretly attaches a tracking transmitter to the camper so he can follow the Dragon Ball hunt. 12 13
At Mount Fry-Pan, Yamcha saves Bulma and Oolong from the Ox-King’s attack. When Wuchen transforms into a Great Ape after hearing that Goku may have died, Yamcha helps Bulma reach safety and explains what he knows of the brothers to the Ox-King. The appearance of Great Ape Goku convinces him to abandon any thought of opposing people with such power. 15 16
Yamcha remains with the group through the gathering of the Dragon Balls. He and Bulma both decline Shenron’s offer of a wish, with Bulma implicitly no longer needing a wish for a boyfriend. After the Dragon Balls scatter, Yamcha gives Bulma a chain for the bead she selects from Mount Fry-Pan’s surviving treasures. 17 18
By the time Goku and Wuchen return from extended training, Yamcha and Krillin have both competed at the World Martial Arts Tournament and received gold and silver medals. Afterward, Yamcha commits himself to cultivation and trains at Bulma’s newly built sanctuary rather than searching for a remote mountain alone. 26 28
Before the next tournament, Wuchen notices that Yamcha’s aura is weak and depleted. He concludes that excessive indulgence has damaged Yamcha’s vital essence, potentially obstructing his early cultivation. Yamcha nevertheless enters the tournament’s preliminary matches alongside Goku, Krillin, and Master Roshi. 49
