Background / History

Goku was sent away as an infant alongside Wuchen after Saiyans deemed his battle power too low. The two were placed in the same spherical space pod and launched into space, eventually arriving on Earth. Wuchen immediately took responsibility for calming and protecting him, establishing their brotherly bond. 1

He regards Sun Wufan as his grandfather and inherits Wufan's Power Pole. After Wuchen begins teaching him cultivation, Goku demonstrates unusually pure focus, rapidly opening his Consciousness Realm and progressing through the Nine-Origin General Knowledge Art. 4 11

Appearance

Goku is a tailed Saiyan with black hair in his normal state. His appearance changes drastically when his Saiyan power erupts. 15 46

  • Possesses a Saiyan tail, the source of the violent energy that once destabilized his transformations. 16 17
  • Becomes a massive, feral Great Ape under a full moon, initially losing his autonomy. 16
  • Briefly assumes a half-human, half-ape form with red fur and golden eyes while reverting from Great Ape form. 17
  • In Golden-Haired Warrior form, his hair turns gold and stands upright, his pupils take on a jade tint, and a golden aura surrounds him. 46

Personality

Goku is innocent, direct, and often unaware of ordinary social conventions. He initially treats criminals such as Oolong and Yamcha as people who simply need to be defeated so they will stop doing bad things. 10 11 His kindness also leads him to forgive Yamcha's apology despite Yamcha's ulterior motives. 13

His purity is central to both his cultivation and combat. He can ride the Flying Nimbus, possesses exceptional concentration, and approaches training with uncomplicated enthusiasm. 4 8 He loves fighting not to dominate others, but to test himself and learn from skilled opponents. 35 46

Goku's main flaw is a tendency to underestimate enemies or prolong fights for enjoyment. Wuchen repeatedly warns him that holding back, abandoning his advantages, and showing misplaced mercy can be fatal. 11 36

Abilities & Skills

Nine-Origin General Knowledge Art

Goku cultivates the Nine-Origin General Knowledge Art under Wuchen's guidance, using separate elemental Origin Souls to develop his Consciousness Realm. 4 5

  • Begins with a fire-attributed Mother Soul, then develops water-, wood-, and earth-attributed souls. 4 40
  • Uses the interaction of the elements to stabilize new breakthroughs; his Earth Soul was formed by balancing fire, water, and wood within his Consciousness Realm. 40
  • Possesses four of the five elements by the fourth level of Soul Condensation. 40
  • His realm remains unstable because he lacks a metal-attributed Origin Soul to complete the five-element cycle and achieve Seal Consciousness. 40

Heaven-Propping Staff

Wuchen teaches Goku the Heaven-Propping Staff, an ancient body-refining discipline that combines staff forms with the tempering of blood and physical energy. 4

  • Practices beneath a waterfall and follows a routine of staff training, meditation, and rest. 4
  • Uses its staff techniques with enough precision to neutralize Yamcha's attacks and deny him openings. 11
  • Applies the art in live combat, improving rapidly while defending against Yamcha. 11
  • Continues using the discipline as the physical foundation for later ki and transformation training. 46

Martial Arts and Ki

Goku has exceptional combat instincts and becomes stronger through difficult battles. 11 35

  • Kamehameha — Learns and masters the technique after training with Wuchen and Master Roshi; later uses repeated blasts to eliminate the remaining Red Ribbon Army forces at Mount Fry-Pan. 26 34
  • Power Pole combat — Uses Sun Wufan's extendable staff for defense, parries Tao Pai Pai's attacks, and later sets it into Korin Tower to access Kami's Lookout. 11 35 44
  • Hand-to-hand combat — Defeats Yamcha after adapting to the Wolf Fang Fist, then uses Tao Pai Pai as a sparring partner before surpassing him. 11 35 36
  • Dodon Ray defense — Effortlessly deflects Tao Pai Pai's signature energy attack. 35
  • Combat growth — Learns opponents' rhythms during battle and often improves before the fight ends. 11 35

Perception and Mobility

Cultivation enhances Goku's awareness and movement. 13

  • Detects Yamcha's presence near the camper after his Origin Soul dispels the effects of a sleeping drug. 13
  • Rides the Flying Nimbus due to his pure heart. 8
  • Uses the Flying Nimbus for rapid travel with Wuchen across the world. 19 24

Saiyan Transformations

Goku's Saiyan physiology produces immense power but initially leaves him vulnerable to violent instincts. 16 17

  • Great Ape — Transforms under a full moon and loses control, instinctively fighting Wuchen's own Great Ape form. 16
  • Great Ape suppression — Wuchen guides him through his meridians and uses the Great Heart-Cleansing Technique to help him revert safely. 17
  • Transformation limitation — After the initial incident, he and Wuchen are unable to become Great Apes even during a full moon. 24
  • Golden-Haired Warrior — An explosive form triggered through pure ki, body tempering, and combat pressure; it initially amplifies his strength dozens of times but causes unstable killing intent. 46
  • Golden-Haired Warrior control — Learns to transform with a thought and fight more freely in the form after extended Hyperbolic Time Chamber training. 47

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Power Pole — Sun Wufan's staff, used for combat and to reach Kami's Lookout through Korin Tower. 11 44
  • Flying Nimbus — Given to him by Master Roshi; accepts Goku because of his pure heart. 8
  • Dragon Radar — Borrowed from Bulma during the second Dragon Ball search. 28
  • Senzu Beans — Used during unrestricted sparring in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber to restore his condition. 46

Relationships

  • Wuchen — Brother, guardian, cultivation teacher, and primary sparring partner. Wuchen teaches him every major cultivation method and repeatedly helps him control his transformations. 1 4 17 46
  • Sun Wufan — Grandfather. Goku treasures Wufan's Four-Star Dragon Ball and inherits his Power Pole and foundational martial arts. 11 32
  • Bulma — Dragon Ball-search companion and friend. Their interactions are often teasing, with Goku bluntly commenting on her unstable cultivation. 6 42
  • Master Roshi — Martial arts senior who gives Goku the Flying Nimbus and shares knowledge of ki and the Kamehameha. 8 26
  • Krillin — Close friend and friendly cultivation rival. They encourage one another to grow stronger. 23 24
  • Yamcha — Former opponent who becomes an ally. Goku defeats him in their first battle but forgives him when he apologizes. 11 13
  • Chi-Chi — Ox-King's daughter. Goku shows affection toward her, prompting Wuchen and Ox-King to discuss a possible future marriage. 19 34
  • Korin — Provides shelter during Goku's fourth Soul Condensation breakthrough and allows the brothers to train at Korin Tower. 40 41
  • Kami — Observes Goku's unusual power and asks him to help confront King Piccolo. 44 47
