Background / History

Vegeta arrives on Earth as an arrogant Saiyan prince who expects Kakarot and Raditz to welcome him. Instead, his Scouter detects numerous powerful readings, then explodes when Raditz reveals a combat power far beyond Vegeta’s expectations. The experience forces Vegeta to confront the fact that Earth’s fighters have surpassed him. 125

He joins Raditz in investigating the Tree of Might and rejects its fruit, insisting that only strength earned through personal training is reliable. Turles defeats Vegeta after consuming the fruit, leaving him critically injured until Goku defeats Turles and gives Vegeta a Senzu Bean. 127 131

On Namek, Vegeta acts on his hatred of Frieza and the Frieza Force, slaughtering Frieza’s soldiers and defeating Zarbon and Dodoria. Dodoria reveals that Frieza destroyed Planet Vegeta because he feared the emergence of a Super Saiyan, intensifying Vegeta’s desire for revenge. 140 142

The Grand Elder initially judges Vegeta unworthy of potential unlocking because of his history of conquest and lack of justice. Though Vegeta rejects Goku and Bulma’s support out of pride, he accepts the Grand Elder’s eventual aid and gains a massive increase in power. 153

Vegeta learns that Super Saiyan transformation requires sufficient S-Cells, a powerful body, extreme rage, and a calm state of mind cultivated over time. He resolves to surpass Goku, but is repeatedly frustrated by Goku’s superior transformations and power. 154 156 163

Vegeta is intensely proud of his royal Saiyan heritage and considers himself a natural-born combat genius. He initially looks down on Earthlings, refuses help he considers charity, and measures his worth through his ability to surpass Goku. 132 153 154

His pride is both his greatest motivation and his greatest flaw. It drives him to train relentlessly after defeat, but also causes reckless choices, including allowing Cell to become Perfect and underestimating opponents such as Dabura, Majin Buu, and Magetta. 206 213 246 344
