Background / History

Goku is a reincarnated modern human soul inhabiting the body of the Saiyan Kakarot. Sent from Planet Vegeta to Earth by Bardock and Gine, he survives the destruction of the Saiyan race and is raised on Baozi Mountain by Son Gohan, who names him Son Goku. Unlike the original Goku, he retains knowledge of the world’s future threats and trains obsessively to survive and protect Earth. 1

From the moment he can walk and speak, Goku asks Son Gohan to train him. He spends more than ten years developing martial arts, ki control, the Kamehameha, and physical conditioning with weighted turtle shells. Son Gohan worries that Goku’s self-punishing routine conflicts with the Turtle School’s emphasis on balance and health. 1

Goku’s altered actions create a major divergence from the expected history. Son Gohan survives because Goku avoids the full moon when possible, though Goku later realizes that an earlier uncontrolled Great Ape transformation likely destroyed their home and terrain while his grandfather concealed the truth. 4 9 21

He joins Bulma’s Dragon Ball journey despite preferring to train. During the journey, he protects Bulma, defeats Oolong and Yamcha, meets Chi-Chi, and becomes increasingly aware that his foreknowledge cannot be fully trusted because the “butterfly effect” has changed people and events. 13 17

Appearance

Goku begins the story as a short, wild-looking child living on Baozi Mountain. He grows substantially taller and stronger through years of training. 1 77

  • Saiyan tail during his childhood; it later regrows after being removed. 23 47
  • Carries Son Gohan’s Power Pole. 10 17
  • Frequently trains while wearing weighted turtle shells, Gravity Bracelets, or weighted clothing. 1 49 114
  • Super Saiyan form features golden hair and green pupils. 154
  • Super Saiyan 2 retains golden hair but produces visible electrical sparks. 205

Personality

Goku is driven primarily by survival, improvement, and the responsibility of protecting Earth. His knowledge of future threats makes him unusually serious and deliberate; he considers strength necessary because powerful enemies will eventually threaten the planet. 1 106

Initially socially anxious and awkward, he is especially uncomfortable with romance and attempts to avoid relationships because he believes women would hinder his cultivation. He remains oblivious or uncertain around Chi-Chi’s direct affection, though his social confidence gradually improves after his rebirth. 1 17 29

His worldview changes through battle. Jackie Chun teaches him that strength alone is insufficient, and Goku comes to value resolve, adaptability, and fighting wholeheartedly even when victory is uncertain. 46 47

Despite his ruthless streak toward threats to his friends, Goku can show restraint when Bulma urges compassion. He also grows more responsible toward his family, prioritizing their evacuation when danger from Babidi and Dabura approaches. 20 54 238
