Appearance
Goku begins as a youthful martial artist, but his three years of training at Kami's Lookout leave him noticeably taller and more mature, with his childish features developing into those of a young man. 36
- Usually wears a martial arts training gi. 36
- Formerly possessed a Saiyan tail, which was pulled off during his fight with his grandfather, Son Gohan. 5
Personality
Goku is driven by the prospect of fighting strong opponents and treats a power gap as motivation rather than discouragement. When Raditz identifies fighters stronger than him, Goku immediately wants to challenge them; when his friends return stronger from Namek, he is genuinely happy for them and asks to spar. 11 52
He is trusting and direct. Goku readily lends Raditz the Four-Star Dragon Ball and agrees to help collect a second Dragon Ball after Shenron scatters them. 10 He can also be naive, such as openly telling Turles about Senzu Beans during their temporary alliance. 71
Although Turles reveals his Saiyan heritage, Goku refuses to define himself by it. He insists on being Sun Wukong rather than “Kakarot,” rejecting the Saiyan pride and worldview Turles tries to impose on him. 68
Abilities & Skills
Martial Arts and Ki Techniques
Goku is an accomplished martial artist whose fighting style combines close-quarters combat, movement techniques, and energy attacks. Master Roshi considers Goku beyond the point where he has anything more to teach him, sending him to train through travel and experience instead. 5
- Kamehameha — Uses the Turtle School's signature energy wave in combat. 5 69
- Afterimage Technique — Evades attacks by moving quickly enough to leave an apparent duplicate behind. 5
- Solar Flare — Blinds opponents with a sudden flash of light; he uses it against Turles in an attempt to exploit the Saiyan's tail. 68
- Ki sensing — Detects powerful energy signatures, including Turles's arrival on Earth. 67
- Flying Nimbus — Uses the cloud for high-speed travel. 5 10
Saiyan Physiology
Goku learns that he is a Saiyan during Turles's assault on Earth. The revelation explains his abnormal strength, former tail, and the danger associated with a full moon. 68 73
- Recovers from near-fatal injuries with a major increase in battle power. 70 71
- His former tail was a severe weakness: having it grabbed immediately stripped him of his ability to fight. 5
- Learns that Saiyans can transform into Great Apes, leading him to understand why his tail and the moon were kept from him. 73
Mimic Super Saiyan
Mimic Transformation is an incomplete Saiyan transformation that approaches Super Saiyan without providing its full fiftyfold increase. Raditz identifies Goku's first rage-induced state as a Mimic Transformation and later trains him to activate it deliberately. 81 82
- Initially triggered by grief and fury over Krillin's death. 72
- Produces golden energy, raised hair, pale eyes, and a dramatic increase in combat power. 72 82
- Can be activated at will after dedicated gravity training and sparring with Raditz. 82
- Causes severe stamina expenditure when used for prolonged combat. 72
Gravity and Time Chamber Training
Goku uses increasingly extreme environments to overcome training plateaus. Bulma provides him with Raditz's former Gravity Chamber, which he uses at thirty times normal gravity before beginning special training with Raditz. 52 80
- Trains with Raditz in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, where one day outside equals one year inside. 81
- Works toward adapting to one hundred times gravity in order to keep pace with Raditz. 81
- Raises his base combat power to two million through nearly a year of chamber training. 85
Equipment / Items
- Flying Nimbus — Primary aerial transport during his early adventures. 5 10
- Power Pole — Used as the key route from Korin Tower to Kami's Lookout. 29
- Four-Star Dragon Ball — His cherished Dragon Ball; he retrieves it after reviving Upa's father. 5
- Senzu Beans — Carries healing beans during the Tree of Might crisis. 70
- Gravity Chamber — Bulma gives him Raditz's old chamber for high-gravity training. 80
Relationships
- Raditz — Ally, training partner, and later mentor in Mimic Super Saiyan. Goku trusts Raditz enough to accompany him to Kami's Lookout and accepts his harsh training methods. 29 30 82
- Krillin — Close friend whose death triggers Goku's first Mimic Transformation. 72
- Bulma — Longtime friend who helps him with technology and provides a Gravity Chamber when he seeks stronger training. 52
- Master Roshi — Early martial arts master; Roshi eventually sends Goku to develop through independent travel rather than continue teaching him directly. 5
- Son Gohan — Goku's adoptive grandfather. Their reunion occurs after their battle at Fortune Teller Baba's arena. 5
- Piccolo — Rival and occasional ally. They spar as equals before joining forces against Turles, though both are initially defeated. 67 68
- Chi-Chi — Goku's wife, who wants their son to focus on academics rather than martial arts. 80
- Son Gohan — Goku's young son, whom Goku believes has exceptional fighting potential. 80
Story Role / Major Arcs
Search for the Dragon Balls
Goku collects six Dragon Balls but cannot locate the seventh, prompting the group to seek Fortune Teller Baba's help. 3 At Baba's arena, he fights Son Gohan, loses his tail when his weakness is exploited, reunites with his grandfather, retrieves the final Dragon Ball, and revives Upa's father. 5
Afterward, he chooses to enter the 22nd World Martial Arts Tournament and leaves to train on his own because Master Roshi believes he needs broader experience. 5
Tournament and King Piccolo Crisis
Goku reaches the tournament final against Tien Shinhan but narrowly loses after both fighters fall from the sky. 20 During King Piccolo's attack, Raditz initially loses Goku's trail and fears the worst, but Goku survives and returns with a way to reach Kami. 22 29
Goku and Raditz use the Power Pole to reach Kami's Lookout, where they fail Mr. Popo's sparring trial but earn the opportunity to train under Kami and Mr. Popo. 29 30 Goku completes three years of Lookout training with improved meditation and ki awareness. 36
Tree of Might Conflict
While Raditz is away from Earth, Turles arrives seeking “Kakarot” and plants a Tree of Might. Goku rejects Turles's claim that he should embrace his Saiyan identity, then teams up with Piccolo against the invader. 67 68
Turles defeats and captures Goku. After Goku recovers with a Senzu Bean, he gains increased power, but Kakao later kills Krillin and several other allies. 69 70 72 Krillin's death pushes Goku into his first Mimic Transformation, though he collapses once the temporary power surge runs out. 72 Raditz returns in time to rescue and heal him. 74
Training for Frieza
Following the crisis, Goku trains with Raditz at Kami's Lookout and in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. He learns to consciously enter Mimic Super Saiyan, though Raditz recognizes that neither of them has yet achieved true Super Saiyan. 81 82 85
Goku later accompanies Raditz to King Kai's planet to seek further training and techniques for the threats ahead. 85 86
Notable Quotes
“I told you, my name is Sun Wukong, not Kakarot, and I'm definitely not some Saiyan.” — Goku 68
Trivia
- Goku's first Mimic Transformation is triggered by Krillin's death, but Raditz later helps him activate it through focused training rather than grief alone. 72 82
- He misses the initial Namek expedition because Chi-Chi does not want him to go. 48
- Goku’s first gift from his son, Gohan, is a piece of candy given to Raditz rather than to Goku himself. 80
