Background / History

Raditz first approaches Goku's group while seeking to complete a Planet Check-in System task involving Goku, Master Roshi, or the Dragon Balls. Krillin mistakes him for a Red Ribbon Army remnant and knocks him unconscious before he can explain himself. After waking, Raditz claims that Dr. Gero imprisoned and modified him beneath the Red Ribbon Army headquarters; Bulma persuades Master Roshi to let him remain at Kame House. Raditz privately treats this as a successful infiltration of Goku's group. 2

Dr. Brief later confirms that Dr. Gero left a controller in Raditz's brain, capable of forcing him into dormancy when Gero is nearby. Unable to remove it safely, Dr. Brief develops a shielding device to interfere with its signal. Soon afterward, Raditz awakens his Saiyan genes and commits himself to martial-arts training. 6

Master Roshi begins Raditz's instruction with solitary survival and physical conditioning on a nearby island. After learning to sense his ki, Raditz advances to sparring and martial-arts theory, eventually returning to train alongside Krillin and Yamcha. 7 8

Appearance

Raditz initially has a small, youthful frame, but intensive training leaves him markedly taller, sturdier, and more imposing by the time he returns to Capsule Corp. 2 32

  • His right hand has a metallic, dark-golden appearance due to Dr. Gero's modifications. 2 3
  • Absorbing excessive energy can turn his skin deep red and cause steam to rise from his body. 4
  • He later wears black-and-white Yardrat clothing during his travels in space. 74
  • He possesses a Saiyan tail, though he generally keeps it concealed or sealed because of the danger of losing control as a Great Ape. 42 56

Personality

Raditz is highly pragmatic and adaptive. He initially hides his objectives to secure a place among Goku's companions, later uses the same strategic mindset to investigate Dr. Gero, infiltrate Frieza's forces, and redirect threats away from Yardrat and Earth. 2 34 55 59

He is intensely committed to self-improvement. Raditz repeatedly pushes himself through solitary training, high gravity, Spirit Control, the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, and dangerous attempts to combine transformations with Kaioken. 15 66 85 87

Despite his bluntness and confidence, he protects people he considers his own. He saves Yamcha from the Gravity Chamber, interrupts Master Roshi's attempted self-sacrifice, gives Tien Shinhan a Senzu Bean after their match, and makes wishes intended to protect Earth. 16 19 24 50 When angered by harm done to his friends, however, he becomes notably ruthless in battle. 74 76

Abilities & Skills

Planet Check-in System

Raditz possesses a system that assigns planet-based missions and grants rewards for their completion.

  • Its early Earth tasks involve obtaining a Saiyan sample from Goku, becoming Master Roshi's disciple, or gathering a Dragon Ball. 2
  • On Namek, it offers him a choice between collecting all seven Dragon Balls and destroying the planet. 46
  • On Yardrat, he chooses the difficult “Spirito” mission over destroying the planet. 51
  • A later completed mission grants him purple energy. 64

Cybernetic Energy Absorption

The device in Raditz's metallic right hand can absorb and retain incoming ki.

  • He absorbs Goku's Kamehameha energy and uses the stored power to fire a surprise Kamehameha against the werewolf. 4
  • The ability can overload his body, turning him red and leaving him near collapse. 4
  • Dr. Gero's brain controller remains a weakness; Dr. Brief's shielding device is only a temporary countermeasure. 6

Ki Control and Martial Arts

Raditz develops advanced ki control through Turtle School, Korin Tower, gravity, and Yardrat training.

  • Can sense ki, including detecting other fighters without relying on a Scouter. 7 16
  • Can suppress his own energy to evade detection and infiltrate hostile territory. 40 59
  • His sensory range eventually extends as far as Namek from Yardrat. 66
  • Learns the Kamehameha, overpowering Tien Shinhan's Dodon Ray. 18
  • Uses the Afterimage Technique to mislead stronger or more skilled opponents. 10 18
  • Learns the Flight Technique by observing Tien Shinhan in battle. 19

Spirit Control and Instant Transmission

Yardrat's Spirit Control teachings greatly expand Raditz's understanding of ki and movement.

  • Learns that Spirit Control is the basis for Yardrat's ki-based techniques. 52
  • Pursues and develops Instant Transmission during his Yardrat training. 50 53
  • His evolved version locks onto a planet's life energy rather than an individual's ki, allowing interplanetary jumps through inhabited worlds. 55 74
  • This method is less direct than standard person-targeted Instant Transmission and may require multiple planetary jumps. 74

Mimic Super Saiyan and Kaioken

Raditz develops an imitation-based transformation rather than achieving the true Super Saiyan state.

  • Mimic Super Saiyan raises his battle power from four million to roughly one hundred million. 85
  • He believes true Super Saiyan requires sufficient S-Cell accumulation and cannot be reached through training alone. 85
  • He learns Kaioken up to a tenfold multiplier under King Kai. 87
  • Combining Kaioken with Mimic Super Saiyan can reach two hundred million combat power, but heavily damages his body. 88

Ki Blade and Purple Energy

Raditz can shape his ki into high-speed cutting attacks.

  • His circular ki blade can pursue a target, sever Turles's tail, and force his Great Ape form to end. 74
  • He uses a larger blade technique to sever Kakao's leg. 75
  • Purple energy gained through the system enhances his attacks and inhibits enemy regeneration or recovery. 64

Seed of Life / Seed of Miracles

Raditz possesses a special life-energy resource that supports recovery.

  • He gives Turles a Seed of Life, which can borrow life energy from planets for recuperation. 42
  • He discovers that the Seed of Miracles improves his recovery speed. 49
  • Its golden energy can shorten Dragon Ball cooldowns, though it cannot restore them completely on its own. 74

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Scouter — Recovered from Goku's abandoned Saiyan spacecraft; measures combat power and helps locate ki signatures. 9
  • Dragon Radar — Borrowed from Bulma to locate Dragon Balls on Earth. 8 32
  • Gravity Chamber — Used for extreme physical conditioning and repeated near-limit training. 15 16
  • Senzu Beans — Obtained through Korin; used to restore stamina and heal injuries, including Yamcha, Tien Shinhan, Goku, and Piccolo. 16 19 74

Relationships

  • Bulma — Close companion and later romantic partner. She helps him with technology, Dragon Ball searches, and communications during his time away from Earth. 32 36 48
  • Goku / Kakarot — His younger brother and a major training partner. Raditz initially seeks Goku for the system, but the two become allies who train together against threats such as Frieza. 2 58 85 96
  • Master Roshi — His foundational martial-arts teacher. Raditz respects Roshi deeply but prevents him from sacrificing himself against King Piccolo. 5 7 24
  • Krillin — Initially knocks Raditz unconscious by mistake; later becomes a trusted companion whose death deeply affects Raditz. 2 74
  • Tien Shinhan — Tournament rival who becomes a respected peer after Raditz learns Flight from him, gives him a Senzu Bean, and urges him away from the Crane School's assassin path. 19
  • Piccolo — Initially an enemy seeking revenge for King Piccolo, later an uneasy ally in Earth's defense. 33 74
  • Turles — A Saiyan adversary turned reluctant associate. Raditz defeats him repeatedly, teaches him gravity training, and assigns him as Hita's liaison. 40 44 84 85
  • Dr. Gero — His former captor and creator of the controller in his brain. Raditz discovers Gero's surveillance and threatens him to stop targeting others. 6 34
