Background / History
The Spirit Realm was forcibly created by great powers of the Immortal Realm. Before its creation, the world consisted only of the Mortal Realm, Immortal Realm, and Reincarnation Realm. Its purpose was to prevent cultivators from directly entering the Reincarnation Realm, where souls go after death to reincarnate. 123
The Spirit Realm was fashioned as a massive land continent without a sea of stars, roughly comparable in size to the Immortal Realm. It served as an intermediary plane between the Mortal Realm and Immortal Realm, with each Spirit Realm fragment corresponding to both a portion of the Immortal Realm and nearby star systems in the Mortal Realm. 123 125
Over ten thousand years ago, the Immortal Realm shattered. The Spirit Realm shattered as well and lost its connection to the Mortal Realm, leaving separate fragments scattered or isolated from one another. 123
One consequence of the separation was the sealing of Blue Star's path of cultivation. The Spirit Realm restricted this path because of resource scarcity, causing martial-arts cultivation methods on Blue Star to be lost. 88
The Beast Taming Sect later linked Blue Star to the Rift World—its dimensional world—through a spatial rift. A clash between ten Blue Star Grandmasters and Beast Taming Sect disciples roughly a century before the story resulted in a 200-year non-aggression Peace Treaty. 88
After the new Heavenly Dao's laws were reconstructed, the separated Spirit Realm fragments were drawn together and rejoined. Spiritual energy surged from the joining gaps, new spirit veins formed, and formerly depleted veins reactivated. The restored circulation also reconnected the broader energy cycle from the Immortal Realm through the Spirit Realm and into the Mortal Realm. 329 330
The restoration immediately triggered widespread struggles over newly connected territories, resources, and spirit veins. These conflicts ultimately led to Ye Wudao's military unification of the realm and the establishment of the Spirit Realm Alliance. 330 351 352
Realms and Cosmology
| Realm | Function / Relationship |
|---|---|
| Mortal Realm | The lower realm that includes Blue Star and its surrounding star systems; access from the Spirit Realm is restricted by cultivation limits. Its spiritual energy is supplied through the higher realms' restored energy cycle. 123 204 330 |
| Spirit Realm | An artificial intermediary world created by Immortal Realm powers; it exists separately from the Reincarnation Realm and channels cultivators from the Mortal Realm toward the Immortal Realm. 123 |
| Immortal Realm | The higher realm whose ancient powers created the Spirit Realm; a spatial rift beyond the Spirit Realm Continent can lead there. Its restoration renewed the energy circulation of the lower realms. 123 200 330 |
| Reincarnation Realm | The destination of souls after death; ordinary people cannot physically enter it, though a projected soul may do so. It remains separate from the Spirit Realm. 123 |
Geography and Political Divisions
- The Spirit Realm contains the East, South, West, North, and Central Desolate Regions, whose major sects compete for resources and influence. 108
- The East Heavenly Domain contains the Azure Sect's city and the Divine Dragon Mansion. 122
- The Central Heaven Domain pressures the East Heavenly Domain over territorial control and later opposes the Azure Sect's growing ability to forge Immortal Artifacts. 126 152
- The Spirit Realm Continent has an edge bordered by a barrier and endless darkness; the Immortal Realm Guidance can navigate this darkness toward the Immortal Realm. 200
- Numerous Spirit Realm fragments remained disconnected after the ancient shattering. Each was separated by a World Barrier that initially prevented Super Teleportation Arrays from linking them, until the restored Heavenly Dao drew the fragments together and healed the realm. 204 205 329
- The Spirit Domain was the Spirit Realm's original core region and retains exceptionally dense spiritual energy. It is known as the region closest to the Immortal Realm, as its land originated from the Immortal Realm and served as the Spirit Realm's foundational anchor. 335 340
- Before its defeat, the Spirit Domain was dominated by five super sects and clans supported by Immortal Emperor-level backers. Its cultivators were generally a major realm stronger than those of the Heavenly Domain, with Great Vehicle Realm experts being common. 335 340
- The Heavenly, Desolate, Earth, and Mystic Domains formed the principal forces of Ye Wudao's coalition against the Spirit Domain. 338
- The Five Directions Domain lies west of the Spirit Domain, the frigid Boundless Domain lies to its north, and the geographically complex Heaven-Earth Domain lies to its south. All three later submitted to the unified Spirit Realm administration. 351
- The Myriad Worlds Academy once appeared on the Spirit Realm continent as a phantom institution for a single year. Only cultivators at the Nascent Soul Realm or below could attempt its assessment, and those who entered never returned publicly. 124
Cultivation
The Spirit Realm contains distinct martial and immortal cultivation paths, alongside the cultivation of Great Dao Power. Ye Anyuan describes the realm's systems as encompassing twelve great realms of martial arts and immortal arts. 124
Known cultivation stages mentioned in the Spirit Realm include:
- Golden Core — Zhao Yiyuan is identified as a Martial Golden Core cultivator. Cultivators travelling through an ordinary spatial rift from Blue Star to the Spirit Realm require at least the Martial Golden Core Realm to survive Void Turbulence. 88 109
- Nascent Soul — under the Spirit Realm's original function, Mortal Realm cultivators who reached this level were forcibly drawn into the Spirit Realm through ascension. 123
- Integration / Body Integration — experts at this stage participate in the struggle over the Great Dao-blessed individual. 108 110
- Mahayana / Great Vehicle — True Person Spirit Cloud is a Mahayana cultivator; Great Vehicle cultivators can use the Beast Taming Sect's trial grounds to return to the Mortal Realm. Great Vehicle experts are particularly numerous in the Spirit Domain. 108 204 335
- Divine Transformation — differs from Spirit Transformation: Martial Courage merges into the body, while Spirit Transformation involves further Nascent Soul integration and a connection to natural laws. 239
- Return to Truth / Void Return — the realm following peak Divine Transformation. 261
- Land Immortal — Ye Anyuan possesses this level of power, while Ye Wudao later reaches it before leading the campaign against the Spirit Domain. 120 338
- Reincarnation Realm — a separate realm relevant to Spirit Realm cultivators' travel restrictions; Ye Anyuan forbids visitors from entering it through the Mortal Realm. 204
The ordinary carrying limit of the Spirit Realm is the Great Vehicle Realm; power exceeding this level is normally rejected by the world's laws. Primordial Gods and Devils can temporarily evade this suppression due to their ancient power, making them decisive forces in the realm's later unification. 344 354
Society and Conflict
- Sect politics dominate the Spirit Realm. Major factions form temporary alliances, contest territory, compete for inheritances, and use Great Dao Oaths to bind agreements. 108 160 205
- Spirit Stones, cultivation methods, spiritual arrays, and Immortal Artifacts are major strategic resources. 142 146 152
- Dharma Artifacts are the Spirit Realm's most common weapons, while spirit-grade treasures are regarded as the highest ordinary class. Immortal Artifacts are exceptionally scarce inheritances from the era before the route to the Immortal Realm was severed. 111 137
- The forging of Immortal Artifacts by the Azure Sect destabilizes the regional balance of power and draws attention from across the Spirit Realm. 146 152
- The East and Central Heavenly Domains negotiate access to the Red Heart Sect's Earth Palace, limiting each side to one hundred entrants and forbidding fighting within. 160 161
- The Earth Palace contains six golden doors associated with key aspects of cultivation, including wealth, companionship, methods, land, Dao, and fate; its treasures are guarded by dangerous arrays. 161 162
- The Spirit Realm's healed fragments brought revived spirit veins and new territory, but also caused extensive post-restoration sect warfare over land and resources. 329 330 352
- The Spirit Domain Alliance attempted to exploit its stronger inheritance and higher overall cultivation to annex the restored realm. Ye Wudao led the forces of the Four Great Domains and Primordial World Gods and Devils against it, eventually subduing the Spirit Domain and its surrounding domains. 335 338 351
- Ye Wudao established an inspection system and inspection unit after unification. Inter-sect fighting was forbidden regardless of the claimed righteousness of either side, and Primordial Gods and Devils were included among the enforcers. 351
- The Spirit Realm Alliance was formally founded at Heaven Gate Sect, with over one million cultivators in attendance. Member sects retain control of their own territories, spirit mines, spirit stones, and internal affairs, but may no longer initiate sect wars. 352
- Sect masters or other authorities must swear a Great Dao Oath not to proactively provoke sect wars or damage the realm's overall order. New sects must join the alliance and receive an alliance token or be treated as illegal organizations. 353
- The collective oaths of the alliance produced a Great Dao Blessing of merit for Ye Wudao, strengthening his Primordial Spirit and expanding his perception across the Spirit Realm. 353
- Qi Yunting becomes the new Sect Master of the Heaven Gate Sect, which serves as the alliance headquarters. Several Primordial Gods and Devils remain to protect both the sect and the alliance headquarters. 354
Connections to Blue Star
- Blue Star is considered the Azure Sect's ancestral land, though other Spirit Realm sects seek access to the broader Mortal Realm and its lost Spirit Realm fragments. 202 204
- The Beast Taming Sect—later called the Myriad Beast Sect—maintains trial grounds connected to Blue Star. 202
- Great Vehicle Realm cultivators can return to the Mortal Realm through these trial grounds, but travel is dangerous and may leave travelers unable to return. 204
- The spatial rift between Blue Star and the Spirit Realm eventually heals, threatening to isolate Blue Star from the rest of the Mortal Realm. 254
- The Azure Sect later assumes the Beast Taming Sect's former responsibilities in the Spirit Realm. 261
- The Azure Sect and Blue Star's Demon Slayer Headquarters establish formal contact, restoring access to cultivation techniques and Spirit Stones. Blue Star subsequently begins sending exceptional geniuses to the Spirit Realm. 261
- Azure Sect policy requires prospective Blue Star entrants to reach the Martial Golden Core Realm and first distinguish themselves in local competition, preventing poorly prepared cultivators from becoming casualties in the Spirit Realm. 227
- Exploration of neighboring Mortal Realm star systems revealed that some corresponding Spirit Realm fragments had been occupied by Heavenly Demons, demonstrating that inter-fragment routes can also bring existential threats toward Blue Star and the Spirit Realm. 297
