Background / History

The Immortal Realm was originally part of the unified Primordial World. After the Primordial World split, its lighter, spiritually dense portion rose to become the Immortal Realm, while the lower portion became the Mortal Realm; a World Barrier separated the two. Heavenly Dao thereafter required cultivators to form a Primordial Spirit and survive lightning tribulation before entering the Immortal Realm with bodies capable of enduring its energy. 286

Before the Spirit Realm existed, the Mortal Realm, Immortal Realm, and Reincarnation Realm formed the world's three fundamental layers. The Immortal Realm corresponded to Great Dao energy and was the stage on which cultivators refined the Dao after ascending. Those who completed their Great Dao could retrieve their souls from the Reincarnation Realm and become Immortal Emperors. 123

The Spirit Realm was later constructed by great powers of the Immortal Realm as an intermediate continent between the Mortal and Immortal Realms. Its purpose was to prevent cultivators from bypassing the Immortal Realm for the Reincarnation Realm and to ensure that cultivators who passed tribulation would be drawn upward to the Immortal Realm. 123

More than ten thousand years ago, dark creatures infiltrated the Immortal Realm and used dark energy to corrupt cultivators into beings driven to devour others. Escalating conflict between immortal sects became a catastrophic war that destroyed immortal palaces, severed spiritual veins, shattered ascension platforms, and ultimately broke the realm into innumerable fragments. 286

Heavenly Dao attempted to reconnect the fragments, but each repaired connection split apart again once its support was withdrawn, leaving the realm even more fragmented. Suppressed by dark energy and lacking the strength to continue repairs, Heavenly Dao could only prevent further collapse. 286 295

After the former Heavenly Dao's consciousness was erased and the world's rules were reconstructed, the fragments began drawing together again under the restored laws. Immortal veins grew across the fractured edges, long-separated mountains and ruins rejoined, and dried spirit springs resumed flowing as the Immortal Realm gradually recovered its original continental form. 329 330

The restoration has also produced widespread conflict. Sect remnants and Immortal Emperor-level experts returning to their former territories have found their lands occupied by other forces, while newly restored blessed grotto-heavens, immortal palaces, and spirit veins have become the objects of violent territorial struggles. 330

Realm Structure

• Position in the world — The Immortal Realm is the upper layer in the arrangement of Mortal Realm, Spirit Realm, and Immortal Realm; the Reincarnation Realm exists as a distinct, non-physical layer beneath them. 123 243
• Associated energy — It is associated with Great Dao energy, while the Mortal Realm is associated with physical energy and the Reincarnation Realm with soul energy. 123

Civilization and Cultivation

In its intact era, the Immortal Realm contained vast immortal palaces, dense immortal energy, spiritual veins, ascension platforms, and innumerable immortals and sects. Its cultivators could use immortal energy, and major sects exercised authority rather than any unified Heavenly Court. 243 225 286

The realm's inhabitants possess stronger innate constitutions than cultivators born in the Spirit Realm or Mortal Realm, though they likewise begin cultivation from the mortal body stage. 199

Immortal Stones are the realm's standard cultivation resource and contain immortal power. By comparison, Spirit Stones, ordinary cultivation manuals, and much of the Four Miscellaneous Arts inheritance left in the Spirit Realm are considered useless or commonplace in the Immortal Realm. 172

Immortal Artifacts

Immortal Artifacts are exceptionally rare in the Spirit Realm because the route to the Immortal Realm was severed. They originate from the higher realm or from inheritances left behind before the separation, and they can contain a sliver of Great Dao Power. 111 196

A complete strand of Great Dao Power elevates an item beyond an Immortal Artifact into a Dao Artifact; top-tier Immortal Artifacts may temporarily borrow complete Great Dao Power depending on their user's comprehension. 196

Immortal Emperors

Immortal Emperor is the supreme title associated with mastery of an Origin Great Dao. Origin Great Dao comprehension is described as the threshold for reaching this rank. 140

Heavenly Court

The Heavenly Court is a major Immortal Realm power with branches and affiliated forces in the Spirit Realm. Its Heaven-Bearing Pavilion branch receives its inheritance, techniques, and resources from the Heavenly Court, and its master Yang Chengtian is a former inner disciple who descended from the Immortal Realm before its shattering. 343

After the world's rules were restored, the Heavenly Court sought to annex the Spirit Realm through its branch and dispatched a Heavenly Immortal and then a late-stage Golden Immortal in response to the Spirit Domain conflict. Both were killed by Primordial World Gods and Devils, while the Supreme Elder's Immortal Emperor avatar was subsequently destroyed by Taotie. 344 345 346 347

Connections to Other Realms

Spirit Realm

The Spirit Realm was constructed as a transit layer between the Mortal and Immortal Realms. After the Immortal Realm shattered, the Spirit Realm also fragmented, and its resources gradually diminished due to the loss of energy output from above. 123 256

Immortal Realm sects once established branches in the Spirit Realm to recruit promising cultivators without competing directly for geniuses within the Immortal Realm. 160

The Red Heart Sect was one such Immortal Realm sect. Before the path was severed, it sealed an Earth Palace in the Spirit Realm, intending to retrieve its possessions when connections were restored. 161

The Spirit Domain is a foundational region of the Spirit Realm that was moved down from the Immortal Realm. It retains scenery, architecture, and spiritual-energy density resembling the higher realm, and is considered the location closest to the Immortal Realm. 340

The Immortal Emperors who helped establish the Spirit Realm arranged for their sects and clans to gain footholds in the Spirit Domain. At least ninety percent of its sects and clans retain ties to Immortal Emperor-backed forces in the Immortal Realm. 340

Following the reconstruction of the world's rules, Spirit Realm fragments also began rejoining. Newly formed spirit veins bridged the fractures and restored local energy circulation, though the reunion triggered conflicts between factions that had independently developed during their long separation. 329 330

Mortal Realm

Before the Spirit Realm was created, cultivators could reach the Land Immortal realm in the Mortal Realm and ascend directly to the Immortal Realm. The First Emperor is stated to have ascended by this route, bypassing the Spirit Realm after being summoned through the Sound of the Great Dao. 123 140

Following the construction of the Spirit Realm, the Mortal Realm's direct connection to the Immortal Realm was severed. Its spiritual energy consequently declined, and the broader cultivation system faced eventual collapse unless the fragmented realms were restored. 256

During the Heavenly Demon crisis, the Mortal Realm's fundamental energy cycles collapsed, causing planets to be destroyed and its spatial structures to fail in a chain reaction. After the world's rules were reconstructed, the collapse halted, damaged planets began recovering, and renewed rule power from the Reincarnation Realm entered the Mortal Realm. 309 329

Reincarnation Realm

The Reincarnation Realm is the destination of souls after death. It was originally part of the natural cycle shared by the Mortal and Immortal Realms, but the Spirit Realm was deliberately made unable to communicate with it. 123

The Immortal Realm's shattering broke the upper cycle between the Immortal and Reincarnation Realms, while the lower Mortal–Reincarnation cycle continued. 123

After the reconstruction of the world's rules, the flow of souls and reincarnation reopened. Its rule power spread outward through the world's boundaries, helping restore the Mortal Realm and the greater energy cycle. 329

Access and Ascension

• Normal ascension — Great Vehicle Realm cultivators who survived tribulation once became Land Immortals, received an Immortal Realm summons, underwent immortal-energy baptism, and ascended as True Immortals. 173
• Former restriction — The shattering of corresponding Immortal Realm fragments made normal ascension from many Spirit Realm fragments effectively impossible. 115 123

The realm's fragments could not remain stable indefinitely while isolated. The loss of a unified Immortal Realm trapped immortal aura within separate fragments and severed the world's energy cycle. 286

Heavenly Dao stated that restoring the Immortal Realm required the circulation and evolution of all Great Dao Power. An Evolution Realm powerhouse could forcibly direct this process, but the realm might not have endured long enough for such aid to arrive. 287

Ye Wudao was tasked with comprehending the ten Origin Daos within one hundred years, as this might have provided a path to repairing the shattered Immortal Realm without requiring him to first reach the Evolution Realm. 288

The crisis shifted after the former Heavenly Dao's consciousness was erased and the world's rules were rebuilt. The renewed laws began reuniting the Immortal Realm and reconnecting its immortal veins without requiring Ye Wudao to first reach the Evolution Realm. 329 330

Restoration has not brought peace. The reunification of fragments has intensified struggles among immortal sects and Immortal Emperors for territory, resources, and former inheritances. Pangu therefore instructed Ye Wudao to ascend to the Immortal Realm and settle the resulting wars, while warning that ancient monsters who never left the Primordial World may still be hidden there. 330
