A Martial Soul is awakened during a formal ceremony and manifests as an inner, inherited power. A person must possess spirit power after awakening to become a spirit master; without it, even a manifested Martial Soul cannot be cultivated. Su Yuntao describes his Lone Wolf Martial Soul as the source of his spirit-master abilities. 2

Martial Souls vary widely in form, including animals, tools, plants, and unusual mutations. Their nature influences a spirit master's likely combat role and the soul beasts sought for spirit rings, though Wu Ling's Unregistered Spirit Origin is stated to have no fixed focus. 2 6

Awakening

Martial Soul awakenings are conducted with six black stones and a crystal ball used to test spirit power. The awakened individual is instructed to clear their thoughts and sense their inner self. 2

• A Martial Soul may manifest without any spirit power; one child awakens chopsticks but cannot become a spirit master. 2
• A low-level manifestation may still possess spirit power, such as a spoon Martial Soul with level one spirit power. 2
• Innate Full Soul Power is a rare result, demonstrated by Oscar's Sausage Martial Soul and Tang San's Blue Silver Grass. 41 73

Classification and Compatibility

Tool and Beast Martial Souls

Tool Martial Souls are generally associated with weapons or implements, while beast Martial Souls are associated with animals. A soul master's Martial Soul commonly guides the choice of soul beast and spirit ring:

• Hammer, blade, and axe Martial Souls are expected to favor attack-oriented soul beasts. 6
• Beast Martial Souls are expected to seek soul beasts of the same species. 6
• Wu Ling's disc-like Martial Soul was initially assumed to be support-oriented, but its lack of a specific focus made compatibility—not conventional type—the deciding factor in his ring selection. 6

Weapon-type spirit beasts are considered unprecedented in the known records of Martial Soul Hall. Wu Ling's research found no prior examples, raising the unresolved question of whether an awakened weapon spirit beast would count as a beast-type or tool-type Martial Soul. 59

Mutations

A Martial Soul can mutate through unusual circumstances. Gui Mei's original ghost-fire Martial Soul became a ghost after he died and his soul repossessed his body. 30

Secondary awakenings are described as collective terms for Martial Soul evolution or mutation rather than a fundamentally separate phenomenon. 144

Spirit Rings and Cultivation

Spirit rings are absorbed to develop a Martial Soul and its skills. Their age and the user's ability to endure soul shock determine what rings can be safely absorbed. 17

The Soul Transformation Device is a belt-like device that grants its user an additional Martial Soul, functioning as an artificial acquired dual Martial Soul. 129

Bibi Dong undergoes the first known true fusion of her Twin Martial Souls:

• Death Spider Emperor and Soul-Eater Spider Emperor are merged using a magic circle, the Evil God Bead, and Wu Ling's tainted blood as catalysts. 144
