Background / History
Doflamingo leads the Donquixote Family and operates a human-trafficking business. After Saint Charlos's mistreatment of slaves creates a shortage of “high-quality” captives, he orders Diamante and the Trebol Army to replenish the supply. Their targets include defeated Giant Pirates and Boa Hancock's Kuja Pirates. 77 78
As a Shichibukai, Doflamingo uses the position to approach and recruit other government-affiliated pirate captains. His ambition is to destroy the World Government's order, but Crocodile and Dracule Mihawk refuse to cooperate with him. Natsuya's sudden rise initially appears to Doflamingo as an opportunity to gain a more recruitable ally. 84
He secretly supports the Sabaody auction house and invites spendthrift Celestial Dragons to drive up profits. Natsuya's public defiance and eventual killing of Saint Charlos rekindle Doflamingo's own hostility toward the Celestial Dragons, though he reacts with caution rather than openly joining the attack. 84 85 88 89
Doflamingo later aligns with Kaido through the manufacture of SMILE Fruits. He shares his interest in Natsuya's dual Devil Fruit ability with Kaido, hoping to use Kaido's strength to uncover its secret. 146 147
Appearance
Doflamingo is recognized by a flamboyant, intimidating presentation: a pink feather coat, sunglasses, a provocative gait, and a persistent wicked grin. 78 146
- Pink feather coat. 78 146
- Signature sunglasses. 78 146
- Often laughs with “Fufufufufu.” 78 85
- Projects a deliberately threatening and theatrical presence. 78 213
Personality
Doflamingo is ambitious, pragmatic, and highly opportunistic. He seeks to expand the Donquixote Family's power, recruit valuable people, and exploit changes in the balance of power rather than adhere to fixed loyalties. 84 90 210
He is capable of changing his approach immediately when he recognizes value. After Boa Hancock awakens Conqueror's Haki, he abandons his earlier plan to sell her and instead invites her into his family. 80 90
Despite his boldness, Doflamingo recognizes superior strength and adapts to it. He retreats when Natsuya intimidates him at Marineford, fears the implications of Natsuya's ability to extract Devil Fruits, and later approaches Natsuya respectfully to negotiate cooperation. 195 242 210
Abilities & Skills
String-String Fruit
Doflamingo uses the String-String Fruit to create and manipulate threads.
- Creates the Birdcage, a large-scale thread enclosure used to block Navy reinforcements and control the battlefield. 97
- The Birdcage is described as durable enough to delay an Admiral for a time, but Garp destroys it with a single punch. 99
- Uses a massive web of strings to pull his ship toward the Pirate Expo island without relying on the Knock Up Stream. 216
- Surrounds himself with threads during the battle against Douglas Bullet's forces. 228
Combat Ability
Doflamingo is a formidable Shichibukai capable of confronting other top-level pirates.
- Arrives personally to confront Boa Hancock after her crew overwhelms Diamante's force. 78
- Battles Tyrant Kuma for Roger's treasure during the Pirate Expo. 220
- Joins Crocodile, Gecko Moria, and other Shichibukai in fighting the Corrupt King's group. 222

Political and Underworld Influence
Doflamingo commands the Donquixote Family's criminal network and maintains valuable commercial connections.

- Caesar Clown — Scientist Doflamingo considers too valuable to surrender because Caesar sustains the SMILE project and other research. 148 150

Story Role / Major Arcs
Kuja Pursuit and Sabaody Auction
Doflamingo's subordinates target Boa Hancock's crew for the slave trade. He personally arrives after Diamante's force is overwhelmed, defeats and captures Hancock and her sisters, and plans to present Hancock as the centerpiece of a slave auction. 78 80
At Sabaody, he watches Natsuya challenge the Celestial Dragons through the auction system. Rather than intervene, Doflamingo sees Natsuya's contempt for the World Nobles as a possible basis for cooperation. 84 85
After Natsuya kills Saint Charlos, Doflamingo declares that he will take responsibility by capturing Natsuya. Boa Hancock stops him with her newly awakened Conqueror's Haki, prompting Doflamingo to attempt to recruit her instead. 89 90
Pursuit of Dual Devil Fruit Power
Doflamingo observes Natsuya reveal both the Door-Door Fruit and Monkey-Monkey Fruit abilities against Aokiji. He immediately recognizes that widespread dual-fruit users could transform the Donquixote Family's power. 95
He later joins Kaido in questioning Natsuya about the secret. When Natsuya reveals that the ability is personally sustained through a Door-Door Fruit “door” in his heart and cannot be safely maintained in others, Doflamingo shifts his attention to Natsuya's ability-extraction method. 146 147
Punk Hazard and Wano Alliance
Doflamingo refuses Natsuya's initial demand for Caesar Clown, considering Caesar indispensable to the SMILE business. He instead permits Natsuya's partner to learn from Caesar. 148
After Nami injures Caesar and Monet and destroys the SAD device, Doflamingo becomes increasingly uneasy about Natsuya's intentions and the possible consequences of Kaido's reaction. 154
Following Natsuya's victory over Big Mom and Kaido's defeat in Wano, Doflamingo realizes that he can no longer safely oppose Natsuya. He reluctantly receives Kaido and the weakened Beasts Pirates in Dressrosa, then helps their plan to hand a Whitebeard Pirate to the Marines. 173
Summit War and Pirate Expo
At Marineford, Doflamingo blocks Natsuya's route to Ace but steps aside after Natsuya's intimidation. 194 195
He attends the Pirate Expo with the Donquixote Family as one of the prominent Shichibukai. During the conflict over Roger's treasure, he battles Tyrant Kuma and later joins the other Shichibukai against the Corrupt King's group and Douglas Bullet's forces. 213 220 222 228
Cooperation with Natsuya
After Kaido's fall, Doflamingo personally travels to Onigashima and proposes a new arrangement with Natsuya: SMILE Fruits in exchange for Seastone weapons and protection. Natsuya accepts, adding a condition of one Devil Fruit per year. 210
When Natsuya later appears in Dressrosa as an Emperor, Doflamingo receives him with open respect. He understands that Natsuya could dismantle the Donquixote Family by extracting its members' Devil Fruit abilities, making Natsuya a greater threat to him than Kaido. 242
Trivia
