Background / History
Kaido led the Beasts Pirates from Wano Country, commanding the All-Stars, Tobi Roppo, Numbers, and other subordinates. His forces were regarded as evenly matched with Big Mom's crew, with the All-Stars and Tobi Roppo serving as counterparts to her Sweet Commanders and minister children 121.
He was responsible for Oden's death more than a decade before the Wano conflict. Whitebeard eventually invaded Wano alongside Big Mom to avenge Oden, whom Whitebeard considered family 157.
Kaido entered Totto Land during Big Mom's Tea Party in his Divine Dragon form. He attempted to recruit Natsuya as a fourth Calamity, provoking a confrontation with Big Mom 132. Natsuya ultimately joined his crew as the Calamity of Beasts, and Kaido brought him to Wano, publicly granting him territory and status within the Beasts Pirates 141 144.
Although Kaido welcomed Natsuya, his recruitment was motivated in part by an interest in Natsuya's ability to possess and extract Devil Fruit powers. Together with Doflamingo, he pressed Natsuya for the secret of his dual Devil Fruit ability and sought to use Natsuya's extraction power on failed Gifters 146 148.
Natsuya later used control of Udon Prison and the Tobi Roppo to undermine Kaido's rule. Kaido initially dismissed King's warnings about Natsuya's ambitions, confident that he could force Natsuya into submission eventually 153 155.
When Whitebeard and Big Mom attacked Wano, Kaido and Natsuya temporarily suspended their conflict to oppose the invading Emperors 157. Whitebeard defeated Kaido's Divine Dragon form and sent him crashing into the sea, after which the Beasts Pirates lost Wano and retreated to Dressrosa 165 168 173.
Kaido later cooperated with the Marines' plan to attack Whitebeard during the Summit War. Natsuya's group intercepted and defeated Kaido's airborne force before it could descend effectively on the battlefield 189 193. Kaido subsequently fought Natsuya directly but was repeatedly overwhelmed and left unable to stop Natsuya's escape 201 203. After the war, Garp and the three Admirals captured and suppressed Kaido and his remaining crew 205.
Appearance
Kaido is a massive, burly man capable of transforming into an enormous Divine Dragon.
- In human form, he can leap from an island-sized flying ship and survive the impact without protection 144.
- His Divine Dragon form has a colossal body, dragon claws, tail, blood-stained maw, and cloud-riding flight 132 165.
- His dragon body is highly durable, though powerful attacks from Whitebeard and Natsuya can severely injure or incapacitate him 158 165 201.
Personality
Kaido presents himself as boisterous and reckless, enjoying drink, banquets, and direct displays of strength. He values powerful people enough to personally recruit them, as shown by his treatment of Natsuya and his willingness to name him a Calamity 141 144 145.
Behind this rough exterior, Kaido is calculating and opportunistic. He recruited Natsuya to investigate his unusual Devil Fruit powers, let internal rivalries within his crew test the newcomer, and later sought to exploit the Marines' conflict with Whitebeard 144 146 189. Even after losing Wano, he attempted to provoke a Marine–Whitebeard war by delivering Teach to the Marines through Doflamingo 173.
He is extremely confident in his durability and authority. Kaido dismissed King's concerns over Natsuya's expanding influence because he believed he could eventually make Natsuya submit, just as King, Queen, and Jack had done 153.

- Uses his dragon body for biting, wind-blade attacks, and overwhelming physical force 165 201.

Kaido possesses formidable Armament and Conqueror's Haki, combined with immense brute strength.
- His Thunder Bagua combines his spiked club, Armament Haki, Conqueror's Haki, and physical strength into a lightning-fast strike 201.

Relationships
- Natsuya — Recruited him as the fourth Calamity of Beasts and sought the secret behind his dual Devil Fruit powers. Their alliance collapsed after Natsuya seized influence in Wano; Kaido was later repeatedly defeated by him 141 146 148 155 201.

- Jack — All-Star and subordinate who participated in rescuing Kaido from the sea after Whitebeard defeated him 168.
- Doflamingo — Allied pirate who worked with Kaido to investigate Natsuya's Devil Fruit powers and later sheltered the defeated Beasts Pirates in Dressrosa 146 147 173.
- Yamato — Kaido's child, who sought to overthrow him and later offered to help defend Wano against any attempt by him to return 209.
- Oden — Kaido's past victim; Oden's death directly motivated Whitebeard's invasion of Wano 157.
