History

From ape-men to an independent tribe

Huang Si directed the breeding and selection of Green World ape-men, seeking greater intelligence and a closer resemblance to Earth humans. At the Earth Realm base, Dong Yao, Xi Yuan, and Li Huo taught successive generations; the ape-men learned Mandarin and developed tool-making skills. An attempt to introduce individual educated ape-men into wild tribes failed when the newcomers were rejected or lost the setting in which they used language 24 25 26 27.

Huang Si instead arranged for the base population to leave together. During a staged threat of slaughter, the ape-men broke out with help from their three teachers. Shu Zi emerged as their leader, and the teachers became covert guardians rather than constant providers of aid 29 30 31. After the refugees established a settlement and a chieftainship, Huang Si declared them the Human Race. More than 6,000 people settled at Fang Mountain, which became their place of origin 36.

Settlement and expansion

The first settlers relied on supplies carried from the base, hunting, and gathering. Li Huo taught them to make fired bricks and build shelter; Xi Yuan taught seed-saving and cultivation; Dong Yao helped Shu Zi govern. The tribe established warriors, shamans, and elders, and built its first temple to the Ancestral Gods 36. Farming was underway near Fang Mountain soon afterward 37.

Under Shu Zi, the Human Race expanded into neighboring ape-man territories through alliances, intermarriage, and conquest. Captives and incoming ape-men gradually joined the growing population, while Xiao Hua and other shamans founded temples and spread the Ancestral Gods’ faith 39 42.

After Shu Zi died, disputes over territory and the God Bow led to war. Three years later, the Human Race had split into four hostile tribes 44:

Tribe Territory or identifying feature
God Bow Tribe Based at Fang Mountain; held the God Bow 44
Wild River Tribe Held territory between the Great Wilderness and the Si River 44
Burning Mountain Tribe Based in the north 44
Giant Stone Tribe Based along the southern coast 44

The tribes remained at war for nearly a century. Captives from these conflicts became household slaves 49.

The great flood

Huang Si’s climate projections warned that a flood would destroy more than 80% of the Human Race’s inhabited areas unless people moved to higher ground. Additional AI teachers taught practical subjects including embankment-building, shipbuilding, medicine, and food preparation 45 47.

When the flood arrived, the Fang Mountain-based God Bow Tribe suffered relatively little damage; the other regions were severely flooded, though casualties were not particularly high 48. At Li River Village, residents built an embankment while their headman abandoned them despite a promise of help 48 49.

Society and beliefs

  • Leadership — Each of the four tribes has a chieftain with territory, warriors, shamans, and temples. Headmen govern groups of villages and maintain warrior squads 49.
  • Ancestral Gods — Dong Yao, Xi Yuan, and Li Huo taught and protected the people before and after their departure from the Earth Realm base 25 30 31 36.
  • Worship — Shamans conduct sacrifices and maintain temples. Xiao Hua later became the Great Shaman and spread the faith across human lands 36 42.
  • Afterlife — Human belief holds that the dead go to the Ancestral Deities in the Heavenly Realm, a place without war, famine, pain, or sorrow 44.
  • Marriage — After forced breeding was abolished, people could choose partners freely. A custom developed of holding a ceremony before marriage, witnessed by family and friends and presided over by respected elders 40.

Notable people and patrons

  • Huang Si — Directed the ape-men’s development and named them the Human Race after they became independent 24 27 36.
  • Shu Zi — First chieftain; led the settlement at Fang Mountain and the subsequent expansion 36 39.
  • Dong Yao, Xi Yuan, and Li Huo — The three Ancestral Gods who educated, protected, and guided the tribe 25 30 31 36.
  • Xiao Hua — Great Shaman who established temples and continued preaching through the wars after Shu Zi’s death 42 44.
  • Hei Zi — Former member who opposed Shu Zi, fled to a wild ape-man tribe, and was killed during a human expedition against it 28 31 38 39.

Notable item

  • God Bow — Given to Shu Zi at his succession ceremony as the symbol of the Human Race’s ruler. It automatically aims ordinary arrows, adds force sufficient to pierce most local fierce beasts’ hides, and has an energy source designed to last more than 300 years. Possession of it later gave the God Bow Tribe its name 36 44.
