Background / History
Vought began as a pharmaceutical research and development company. Stable production of Compound V enabled it to create superhumans and build a superhero system. Over time, hero branding, commercial appearances and films became so prominent that the public came to see Vought primarily as an entertainment company. Stan Edgar and other executives sought to restore its pharmaceutical focus, but major plans stalled amid political negotiations 14.
Vought controls the creation, packaging and management of superheroes. It concentrates resources on seven heroes selected for strength, popularity and public support: The Seven. Their headquarters occupies the upper floors of Vought Tower 12.
Operations
| Area | Activities |
|---|---|
| Compound V | Produces the substance used to create supes. Its Compound V leak later becomes a public scandal 12 30. |
| Hero management | Manages The Seven and recruits replacements. Vought used a nationwide reality-show-style audition to select Starlight, then installed Stormfront directly when another vacancy arose 12. |
| Public image | Tracks heroes through polling, internet monitoring and trend statistics to calculate approval ratings. A task force separately prepared daily guidance on Homelander’s relationship with Ryan and their intended father-son image 7 19. |
| Film and media | Produces superhero films and plans related merchandise. Its launch ceremony for Ryan’s film occupied three soundstages and drew broadcasters and entertainment outlets 36 58. |
| Education and research | Co-founded Godolkin University in 1965. Publicly an elite academy for supes, it also serves to observe, experiment on and control its students 45. |
Corporate Control and Controversies
- Ryan’s upbringing — Vought maintained a monitored, artificial community around Becca and Ryan for eight years as part of a plan to raise Ryan as an ordinary child. Homelander’s discovery of them ended that arrangement 2 4 7.
- Homelander — Following Madelyn Stillwell’s death, Edgar had to intervene in management. Becca later found that Vought would not confront Homelander directly over his access to Ryan 4 6.
- Concealed incidents — After Lamplighter killed Grace Mallory’s grandchildren during a mission, Vought announced that he had retired for personal reasons. It later described Stormfront’s departure from The Seven in similar terms 12 45.
- Political influence — Edgar used his adopted daughter, Congresswoman Victoria Neuman, to contain opposition to supes and Vought’s monopoly while she publicly presented an anti-Vought position 13.
- The Boys — Vought framed Hughie’s group as wanted fugitives after Translucent’s death. Starlight later worked inside The Seven to help The Boys oppose Homelander and Vought 4 16.
Vought Studios in the Marvel Universe
Ryan arranged the establishment of Vought Studios in the Marvel Universe, with Soldier Boy as its president. He suspected its staff and operations were a S.H.I.E.L.D. front, but chose to make use of their work 107 109. The studio promoted Soldier Boy through films and extensive branding; its operation later received covert S.H.I.E.L.D. support and Stark Industries funding for a campaign introducing Homelander to that world’s public 118 119.
