Background / History

Original Black Noir

Black Noir belongs to The Seven’s original lineup alongside Homelander, Queen Maeve, The Deep, Mr. Marathon, Translucent, and Lamplighter. He remains on the team through its later roster losses 12 45 76.

Ryan understands that Noir was not born mute: a brutal beating by Soldier Boy left him unable to speak and severely impaired his intellectual functioning. Ryan also knows about his almond allergy and the cartoon animals that accompany and encourage him when he is alone 31.

At their first meeting, Ryan calls him Homelander’s “best helper,” hoping that the praise might persuade Homelander to spare him in the future. Unlike the death Ryan remembers from the original show, Noir is still alive after Soldier Boy’s return and remains one of The Seven’s three surviving members following Starlight’s rebellion 31 57 76.

Comic Counterpart

Comic Black Noir was created by Vought as a clone capable of killing Homelander if he became uncontrollable. When Homelander failed to cross the company’s threshold for elimination, Noir began committing crimes in his likeness and sending him photographic and video evidence. His objective was to drive Homelander insane and manufacture the justification for carrying out his mission 81.

The counterpart reaches this world through the character exchanges associated with Ryan’s Rubik’s Cube Treasure. Ryan eventually identifies him as a comic consciousness inhabiting the original Black Noir’s body, rather than a separate physical arrival 78 88.

Appearance

  • Original form: Wears a pitch-black mask and helmet that conceal every inch of skin and make his expression unreadable 30 31.
  • Difference from Homelander: Stan Edgar points out that the original Noir neither resembles Homelander nor shares his skin color 78.
  • Possessed form: Flesh, bones, and skin reshape into an exact Homelander duplicate, matching his face, build, hairstyle, and stars-and-stripes uniform 85.
  • Identifying discrepancy: At the wedding ambush, Ryan identifies the impostor by the absence of the chest badge worn by his father 87.

Personality

The original Noir communicates silently and appears uncomfortable under close scrutiny. During Ryan’s introduction, he nods, avoids eye contact, and looks toward Homelander for help before nervously offering Ryan a handshake. He also understands the team’s publicity routines, quietly adopting a heroic pose when Mitchell’s camera enters the meeting 30 31.

Comic Black Noir is sadistic, obsessive, and easily provoked. He records crimes to frame Homelander and cannot tolerate seeing another Homelander happy with a family. Ryan’s public praise of his father enrages him, while direct mockery draws him away from other targets and into reckless attacks 81 85 89.

Although originally bound to a conditional assassination mission, the counterpart claims that he has abandoned the need to make Homelander insane first. He boasts about having killed another Homelander and savoring the victim’s pleas for mercy 89.

Abilities & Skills

Physical Transformation

Comic possession reconstructs the original Noir’s body into a Homelander duplicate 85 88.

  • Reproduces physical appearance and clothing closely enough to deceive Firecracker 85.
  • Supplies Homelander-like abilities to a body that originally belonged to a different superhuman 88.
  • The exact mechanism connecting the clone, his host body, and Homelander remains unclear to Ryan during the battle 88.

Super Strength and Durability

The possessed Noir fights at the highest combat tier shown in The Boys universe, matching Homelander directly and resisting coordinated attacks 88 89 90.

  • Withstands the initial mass bombardment by Stan Edgar’s superhuman reinforcements without visible injury 87.
  • Resists Jordan’s energy blasts and repeatedly throws experienced combatants out of the fight 88.
  • Cannot injure Ryan’s enhanced body with either a full-power Heat Vision blast or a direct punch 88 89.
  • Prolonged combat wears him down until Homelander’s Heat Vision removes flesh from his shoulder 90.

Heat Vision

Comic Black Noir fires destructive crimson beams from his eyes 87.

  • Counters Billy’s Laser Eyes with accurately timed Heat Vision 87.
  • Sweeps a beam through a full circle, cutting numerous attacking superhumans in half 87.
  • Severs Kimiko’s fingers when she attempts to claw his eyes 88.
  • Maintains a close-range beam clash with Homelander while restrained by Billy and Maeve 90.

Flight and Super Vision

The counterpart combines aerial mobility with vision capable of tracking incoming energy attacks 87 88.

  • Reads the trajectory of Billy’s Laser Eyes and intercepts them 87.
  • Uses flight to escape ground restraints and threaten opponents unable to pursue him 87 88.
  • His aerial advantage makes keeping him grounded a central objective of Ryan, Billy, and Maeve’s strategy 88 90.

Limitations and Vulnerabilities

  • Original Noir’s almond allergy: Known to Ryan before the possession 31.
  • Suppression: The body is kept unconscious under halothane, with a brainwave monitor arranged to signal when the gas should be disconnected 85.
  • Emotional manipulation: Family imagery and Ryan’s taunts reliably provoke the comic counterpart 85 89.
  • Concentrated attacks: Exhaustion, shoulder damage, and coordinated restraint expose him to Ryan’s finishing attack 90.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Black mask and helmet — Conceal the original Noir’s face and skin 30 31.
  • Camera — Used by the comic counterpart to record crimes committed while impersonating Homelander; he retrieves it again when planning to ruin Homelander’s relationship with Ryan 81 85.

Relationships

  • Homelander / Azu — Original Noir’s team leader and neighbor at Vought Tower. For the comic counterpart, Homelander is both the model for his cloned body and the target of his assassination mission 30 42 81.
  • Ryan — Treats the original Noir sympathetically and tries to improve his standing with Homelander. Later organizes the comic counterpart’s ambush and delivers the decisive Heat Vision attack 31 81 90.
  • Soldier Boy — Responsible for the original Noir’s muteness and severe intellectual impairment, according to Ryan’s knowledge 31.
  • Billy Butcher — The comic counterpart recognizes him as someone who would kill him. Billy helps restrain him during the final battle 87 90.
  • Becca — Targeted by the counterpart as part of his attempt to frame Homelander. Her unexpected Energy Shield helps expose and repel him 81 87.
  • Stan Edgar — His body double is murdered by the impostor. Edgar subsequently supplies Ryan with personnel, Temp V, and Vought’s cooperation 78.
  • Firecracker — Guards the unconscious body under instructions she believes came from Homelander; the awakened counterpart kills her 85.
  • Queen Maeve — Teammate of the original Noir; helps ground and restrain the possessed counterpart 12 88 90.

Story Role / Major Arcs

The Missing Noir and Murdered Double

Ryan receives footage of a Homelander lookalike murdering Stan Edgar’s double and posing with the body. Discovering that Black Noir is missing, he suspects the comic counterpart and forms an uneasy alliance with Edgar to eliminate him 78.

Wedding Ambush

Ryan incorporates the trap into Superhuman: In the Name of the Father. A wedding shoot provides a plausible reason for Homelander, Becca, Billy, The Seven, and Edgar’s reinforcements to gather. Homelander’s staged departure gives the impostor an apparent opening to attack Becca and frame him 81 82 86.

A prerecorded father-son interview enrages Noir and directs his attention toward the film set. Upon arrival, he is surprised by Billy’s energy attacks and Becca’s powers, then faces the assembled superhumans 85 87.

Final Battle and Death

Noir massacres several reinforcements and initially resists The Seven and The Boys. Ryan intervenes to protect Jordan, survives a direct Heat Vision blast, and summons Homelander. Father and son fight together, with Ryan intercepting attacks while Homelander delivers the heavier blows 87 88 89.

After Billy and Maeve join them, the group prevents Noir from escaping into the air. Ryan uses Berserk and Cell Energy Conversion to unleash level-five Heat Vision, destroying Noir’s head. When the counterpart still attempts to speak about his mission, Homelander tears out his brain, ending the fight 90.

Noir’s death is followed by Homelander collapsing and subsequently becoming stronger. Ryan later connects the clone’s death to Homelander breaking through his previous power ceiling 90 91 103.
