Background / History

Aoike was born without a surname to Uchiha Jo and Hyuga Shirahana, making him unwelcome in both the Uchiha and Hyuga clans. As a Hyuga branch-family member, he bore the Caged Bird Seal; his mother died during the Land of Lightning kidnapping incident while serving as Hinata Hyuga's guard. Aoike mourned at her grave, where the strain of his two ocular bloodlines caused him to collapse. 1

At age six, Hyuga Hiashi appointed Aoike to succeed Shirahana as Hinata's guard and sparring partner. His branch-family status served as camouflage while he pursued a long-term plan to remove his seal and investigate the lunar Ōtsutsuki, who had taken an interest in Hinata. 1 2

Aoike excelled at the Ninja Academy, repeatedly defeating Sasuke Uchiha and later teaching him techniques from a scroll left by Aoike's mother. He applied for early graduation after developing Wind Release Chakra Mode, defeating Special Jōnin Yamamoto Shin in the assessment. 2 5 7

After graduation, Aoike spent two years in Root under Danzō. He carried out assassinations while concealing his true intentions, using the organization as an outlet for his negative emotions and a source of training and resources. On the moon, Aoike exploited the conflict between the Ōtsutsuki main and branch families. He massacred both factions, absorbed their genetic factors through Heavenly Controller of Fate, killed Ōtsutsuki Toneri, and destroyed the lunar Tenseigan. During the final battle, his Ōtsutsuki factor awakened and allowed him to link with the Tenseigan. 9 15

Severely injured after falling back to Earth, Aoike was rescued by Konan and Nagato. His Mangekyō Sharingan was ruined, but his Byakugan evolved into the Tenseigan and the Caged Bird Seal vanished. After accepting responsibility for damage caused by his fall, he joined Akatsuki and became Konan's partner. 16 18

Aoike later returned to Konoha during Orochimaru's invasion. He purged Hyuga members who had abused their status, defeated Hiashi in a Gentle Fist duel, branded him with a reinforced Caged Bird Seal, and forced the abolition of the Main House–Branch House distinction. 19 23

Aoike is a pale, white-haired boy whose appearance reflects his mixed lineage. Before his Tenseigan evolution, he concealed his branch-family identity in plain sight despite bearing the Caged Bird Seal.

His early life leaves him detached from most of Konoha. He considers many acquaintances superficial, regards Sasuke largely as a useful training partner, and views Root as a means to vent the dark chakra and emotions associated with his Mangekyō. 8

Despite this detachment, Aoike is protective of Hinata and consistently supports her training.
