Background / History
Itachi was involved in the Uchiha clan massacre, which left his younger brother Sasuke alive and determined to avenge their family 3 29. After leaving Konoha, Itachi joined Akatsuki but kept a direct line of contact with Third Hokage Sarutobi Hiruzen 29.
Itachi later entered Konoha with Kisame, ostensibly seeking the Fourth Hokage’s legacy. He told Kakashi their target but avoided escalating the encounter, partly because Kisame was monitoring him 28. After separating from Kisame, Itachi used Hiruzen’s private signal to arrange a secret meeting with the new Hokage, Jiraiya. He explained the massacre and reported on Akatsuki’s leader, members, and pursuit of the Tailed Beasts. Jiraiya asked him to continue gathering intelligence 29.
