Background / History

The Ōtsutsuki living on the Moon were divided into a Main Family and a Branch Family. Unlike the Hyūga’s master-servant structure, the two lunar factions were open enemies: the Main Family followed Hamura’s will by guarding Kaguya’s seal and avoiding interference with Earth, while the Branch Family believed the Ninja World had to be destroyed. Their conflict intensified after the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path was summoned to Earth. 9

Branch-family members had their eyes removed at birth and relied on chakra-condensed Heart’s Eye for perception. Their sensory range was inferior to the Byakugan’s, while the Main Family retained their eyes. 2 10

Toneri and his father secretly visited Earth to observe Hyūga Hinata, intending for Toneri to return in ten years and marry her. Aoike tracked their departure route and later discovered the gateway between Earth and the Moon. 2 3

Tenseigan

The Branch Family possessed a synthetic Tenseigan created through clan secret arts and the gathered Byakugan of Hamura’s descendants.

• Its power had been reduced after the Branch Family siphoned energy to support the war against the Main Family. 14
• It could produce chakra chains that ignored physical attacks and sealed chakra pathways on contact. 15
• Through Heavenly Restriction, the chains could immobilize a target and nearly halt their chakra circulation. 15
• Its golden chakra torrent pierced Aoike’s Susanoo and grievously wounded him. 15
• The surviving users depleted their chakra operating it, leaving them unable to escape Aoike’s explosive-tag trap. 15

Puppetry and Combined Ninjutsu

The Branch Family deployed puppets, artillery, and coordinated large-scale ninjutsu in battle.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Observation of Hinata

Toneri and his father enter Konoha covertly, use Heart’s Eye to inspect Hinata, and plan for Toneri to marry her in ten years. Their visit alerts Aoike to their existence and gives him a route toward the Moon. 2

Lunar Civil War

Aoike arrives on the Moon amid the Main and Branch Families’ long-running ideological war. He tortures captured members for intelligence, then deliberately provokes both sides to accelerate their decisive battle. 9 10

Destruction of the Main Family

Aoike murders the Main Family’s rear guard and infiltrates their compound while the two factions fight. The Branch Family then uses its Tenseigan to overwhelm and annihilate the Main Family’s battlefield forces. 10

Fall of the Branch Family

After the Main Family’s defeat, Aoike destroys the weakened synthetic Tenseigan and battles the Branch Family. He kills Ikki, Toneri, and most remaining members, then survives the clan’s final Tenseigan attack through the awakening of his Ōtsutsuki factor and Tengu form. 13 14 15

The last survivors, drained after operating the Tenseigan, are killed when Aoike detonates explosive tags planted in the cavern’s structural supports. 15
