Background / History

Tang San arrives late to his martial soul awakening ceremony, where Su Yuntao dismisses his Blue Silver Grass as useless. The test instead reveals that he possesses Innate Full Soul Power. Unknown to Su Yuntao, Tang San also carries the Clear Sky Hammer as a second martial soul. 2

After meeting Aizen, Tang San insists that martial souls do not determine everything and vows to make his name known across the continent. He becomes close to Aizen, reveals his hidden weapons and dream of founding the Tang Sect, and invites Aizen to join it. Aizen refuses while advising him not to expose his secrets carelessly. 3

Tang San obtains his first Soul Ring from a Mandala Snake in the Soul Hunting Forest. While remaining behind to care for the injured Yu Xiaogang, he is attacked by Retsu Unohana. He uses Blue Silver Grass, Purple Demon Eyes, and improvised stone weapons to endure her assault until Aizen intervenes. Believing Aizen saved him from an unknown attacker, Tang San places further trust in him. 13 15

He later challenges Ulquiorra repeatedly during Aizen’s training program. Although Ulquiorra conceals his true strength, the training greatly improves Tang San’s durability, technique, and Soul Power. 17

During the Heaven Dou City Soul Arena battles, Tang San reveals the Clear Sky Hammer against Retsu Unohana. The fight ends with both combatants incapacitated, while Tang San suffers a devastating shoulder wound that severs his arm. Tang Hao secretly removes him from the infirmary to seek treatment. 49 51

After traveling toward Sea God Island, Tang San is pursued by Ulquiorra and Grimmjow. Tang San is ambitious and resolute. From childhood, he rejects the idea that a martial soul alone determines a person’s future, choosing instead to rely on cultivation, Tang Sect techniques, and relentless effort to establish his own reputation. 3

He is deeply protective of Xiao Wu and his companions. This loyalty drives him to take damage for others, rescue wounded allies, and continue fighting despite overwhelming opponents. He regards the safety of those endangered because of him as his personal responsibility. 206 249
