Background / History

Yhwach is summoned by Aizen after the latter spends over seventy-five million Soul Coins to call forth the entire Stern Ritter. Unlike the other summons, Yhwach manifests as a helpless infant and initially possesses only Soul Gift. Aizen strengthens him by offering him low-value summoned Soul Reapers, restoring his senses and allowing him to mature. 56

Upon regaining speech, Yhwach refuses allegiance. He accepts a cooperative arrangement with Aizen only while he remains weaker, openly stating that he will remain attached to Aizen only until Aizen becomes weaker than him. Aizen keeps him alive as a weapon against Aizen Sousuke despite Urahara Kisuke's recommendation that he be eliminated immediately. 56

By the Soul Master Competition, Yhwach has grown into a powerful Quincy combatant. He uses the tournament not merely to win but to mark opponents with Soul Gift, intending to later harvest their souls, knowledge, experience, and talents through Auswählen. 72 73
